With careful determination, Zach placed two aspirins on his tongue and leaned over a tall glass of water, lapping up enough to aid himself in swallowing them. He couldn't clearly remember most of the time he'd spent after changing, except the one short interval when he'd been given the hat he was wearing. Two large holes had been excavated into the material, room enough for each of his horns to be shoved through and assuring him the hat would not fall off. He was extremely self-conscious of the missing hair, but that morning had discovered something else to be quite worried about. He had to see Kaveri, and soon. Her duplex looked like it hadn't been lived in for days, a worrying sight.

His tail swept back and forth sluggishly on the ground, the base of it quite sore. The chair he was sitting in was flipped around so that his wings and tail wouldn't get crushed or bent at odd angles. Once the medicine kicked in he'd eat the slab of meat he'd grabbed along the way. His headache was so bad he wasn't sure whether he'd even picked something cooked. It didn't seem to matter any more. He'd eaten rats the other day. Rats. Not something one congratulates themself on.

Now, which book was it?
The one that had the long introduction, written by some old professor. The book was based on his work, and he decided to appraise it.
His interperatations take away from the book itself, especially if you read the interperatations first.
Jerrick didn't really like the man, but he certainly enjoyed the book. It looked at human behavior, and how it was reflected in fictional literature.

There had to be a clue there...

Emerwyn was puzzling on this as she finally went to the cafeteria. She'd been craving a good, hot cup of tea for a long time; and this thought comforted her. It meant she hadn't completely lost her human tastes yet. Of course, even the thought of eating meat made her nauseous, but that was understandable.
She made her way over, and prepared her tea. And while she was at it, the smells of the cafeteria food filled her nostrils. But none so strong as the one of the fresh, undercooked (if at all) meat. She turned around with a cup of hot tea, and scanned the area, seeking out that horrid smell.
She spotted it, and it's diner, sitting at a table. The man was hardly a man at all any more. But Emerwyn was used to that by now.
It was Zachary, in fact, the man she'd met once at the beach. It had been an awkward meeting. She had been afraid she'd frightened the man in some way she couldn't explain.
What was amazing about Zachary, though, was that he looked not like any animal she knew to exist. He had popped right out of one of her old storybooks, now even more than ever.

When she passed him, she knew it was only polite to greet him, especially since she'd already acknowledged his presence.
"Hello, Zachary," she said, with a gentle smile.

Most of the islanders boasted marvelously sharp senses, but other than seeing in the dark, his were nearly as dull as the next human's. He looked up only when addressed. The woman's face looked familiar, mainly because of how odd it was. He wasn't one to be talking about odd looking faces, though. Still... she had a name, and she must have mentioned it. M... something? That wasn't right. It sounded more unusual, more like...

"Emerwyn," he nodded back, looking faintly surprised. He waited. No screaming, no running? Either she was insane or no one had mentioned to her who had attacked Aubrey. "Uh, want to sssit?"

Damn letter 'S'. The only way he could overcome the lisp was to hiss it out like a lizard or snake. His sharpened front teeth were no longer suited to making the sound.

Now, Emerwyn was not expecting to be invited to sit. Maybe she had put on that she was? Well, she wasn't going to turn down the invitation. After all, a monster can only find comfort in other monsters.
So she smiled, and nodded, and took a seat across from him.

No, Emerwyn did not know that Zachary had been the one who attacked Aubrey. But, even if she had known, everyone here seemed to pose some sort of threat to her. And she was going to deal with it all on her own terms. Zachary's face did not light up in the way the carnivores' faces always did when she walked by.

"How have you been doing, Zachary?"
Their conversation last time certainly was interesting. It was when Emerwyn had first changed, and had forgotten about Ian, and nearly everything that happened to her on the Island - everything that was good, anyway.
And Emerwyn had found herself nearly gushing to Zachary, in her strange and cryptic way.

Perhaps it was her incomprehensible speaking that had made her so difficult to remember. The remaining morphine that still sloshed through his system quelled his wilder habits, such as taking bites out of passerby. No, he had a piece of meat, and he was going to eat it.

He stretched his wings out as far as they could go and then folded them again. They didn't get a whole lot of exercise for what he considered obvious reasons. Even he knew that wings that size couldn't carry someone five-foot-three. Or taller, which he was beginning to suspect. The long neck just made the ground that much farther away.

"Well," he pondered, propping his left hand up to hold his bony snout, "Thingsss were going ath well ath could be exsspected, until a few dayth ago."

He poked a single claw into the meat and a tiny trickle of blood bubbled out. His civilized human mind was thoroughly sickened by the sight, but the rest of him was happy to see that the meal had been unspoiled by the interference of cooking. He looked back up at Emerwyn. "And you?"

The dragon's wings really were fascinating to watch. She could only imagine just how incredible they'd be once they were completed. Of course, they might never be able to lift him off the ground.

"As well as can be expected." The cursed phrase. It was all there was to say. Completely non-commital. You didn't have to lie, and you didn't have to bleed your sorrows to a stranger.

"I suppose, I am about the same. I am doing my best not to get eaten." She smiled. "I do not think I'll have to worry about you."
"But, if I may... is everything alright? Was it - your change?"
Emerwyn did not want to pry, but it did seem that he was inviting her to ask.

"Oh, jeez. Eaten?" His tail wrapped around a leg of the chair in expected guilt. He could have sworn he'd been sleeping that night, but if he hadn't been, who knows...? He grinned in relief when he heard she wasn't intimidated by him. Wasn't him, then. "Mm, there ith a pretty tough food chain here... I'd be worried about a big bear-man though. Completely lossst it, I heard." From where, he failed to mention.

"Nothing ith right here. But I gueth it'th the changesss mostly. Don't know how to exssplain it otherwithe." He lowered his voice, eyes darting to look for cameras that were too well hidden to see. "Er, do you know a Doctor Duvert?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 22, 2006 7:29 pm

She was glad. He seemed to be calmed by the fact that she did not fear him. It really made conversation easier to lay down that notion.
"It seems to be an increasingly common threat." The crazed bear-man. Could he be the same as Joli's boyfriend?

"Duvert? Do you mean Sabin Duvert? Yes, I have heard much about him. Though, I cannot say I have ever met him..."
But, she knew that he was the one Ian had contacted when she was ill. He was... well, he wasn't exactly helpful, to say the least.

"Oh, yeah. That guy almossst did me in." He had no scars to show, but the memory of the attack was still fresh in his mind as though it had happened only the day before. "I don't know how many people here are becoming predatorsss, but watching out ith a good idea. Inthidentally... what are you becoming?"

"Sssabin, yesss." That tongue! "He'th not... renowned for being the motht benevolent perssson around, ith he?" The man was undoubtedly insane, he knew that, but he felt wary of the scarce bits of memory following his changes. 'Nice' people were always the most suspicious.

"A deer. Of some variety. The majority of people I have known eat meat in some way, shape or form. It must be some cruel joke for the doctors.
And, Doctor Duvert. No. Most stories tell he is almost as cruel as the "Great Doctor Moreau" himself. And perhaps doubly as insane.

... Has he... done anything to you? Aside from the usual, I mean."

She was concerned. Why had Zachary brought him up, unless he was connected with Zach's current - discomfort?

"Ah!" He glanced at her ears and hooflike hands. They made sense now. "Definitely can't put it passst them to do that. But I think I've ssseen another deer-person before... Ian?"

"Oh, uh, no, nothing," he replied quickly. "Jussst... curiouth, I guesss." He cleared his throat. No sense dragging a complete stranger into his paranoia.

"So, now that thingsss are a little bit leth odd... how long have you been here? You can't have changed more than a couple timesss, either, or at leatht it looksss that way." His head-and-neck ache was subsiding slowly from incessant pounding to an irregular tap.

Ian. She chose not to mention that she knew the man - more than knew him.
She simply nodded in acknowledgement.

And, she, in turn, chose not to pursue the matter. She did not consider them complete strangers, but they certainly were not at the point of sharing life stories.

Here was the question again. It brough to mind the conversation she'd had with Kaveri. She'd changed less than many people here, and had been here quite a deal longer.
"Very soon it will have been a year. I arrived early September last." She answered quite readily now, it having been brought up so recently. "I do not understand why I have not advanced as far as many of the others. A - friend," For lack of a better term, perhaps. She seems as such. "-suggested that I have been overlooked, forgotten. It is a nice thought, unplausible as it is."

"Wow, you got lucky," he breathed. "Your friend isss probably right. You haven't done anything to get their attention, I guesss? But after a while, you get... sssick... thuppothedly, though. Likely a lie, becaussse you don't look sssick at all."

"Ugh, I'm ssso gullible," he grumbled, shaking his head.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 22, 2006 9:52 pm

"I suppose lucky might be a word for it. However, being stuck in this limbo is not enjoyable at all, either. The only benefit would be the lack of physical pain." The choice of the word 'limbo' was chosen from Pyroth. And, after what he'd said about being complete, she could not wait for it all to be over.

You don't look sick at all. Emerwyn wondered at this. She did not look sick any longer? She was getting better, then? She swallowed, and indeed, the burning in her throat had all but vanished completely.

But, what Zachary meant, she did not know. "You mean, this has happened before? To someone else?" If there were nasty side effects to having one serum sit in you for so long she wanted to know about them.
She had a strange feeling that something like this had happened to Zachary himself, but she was not going to press the matter - directly.

"I don't think there isss thuch a thing ath 'complete' when you're an animal version of a Frankenssstein monthter." He tapped his right fingers on the table. "Besssidesss, before coming to this island, didn't you ever feel- I don't know- alienated? Alone? Different? I know I have. I don't think it'sss that thimple. Phythically, sure, we'll be what we were intended to from the ssstart. But wholenesss isn't jutht about that... or it shouldn't be"

"Well, to sssomeone on the island thuppothedly. I don't know who they were, I wasssn't told." He blinked. "It'th just... sssell deterioration?"

He smiled apologetically. "I'm probably not making any sssense. Thith whole people turning into animalsss thing is inthane, I'm jutht repeating what I was told about it. Again, probably liesss. This island should be famous for liesss."
