Saw this post on my college's scifi club message board and thought it would make for good discussion:
Okay, this may be a little off in terms of relevance...but thinking back about Sailor Moon the other day, a thought struck me. The whole concept of Crystal Tokyo is evil. Its taking away human free will for the sake of a utopia. Peace at the cost of humanithy under an immortal monarch...
Correct me if I'm wrong but my entire opinion of the Senshi has just been dramatically altered. Still like the show, but damn...protecting people from life draining monsters is one thing, but creating a totalitarian empire built on giving everyone simulated perfect happiness is wrong...very wrong...its like brainwashing. Does anyone have further commentary on this? Is that goal justifiable, what does everyone think?

Have the people really lost their free will though? The dark moon clan is able to rise up in opposition of their rulers, which shows that they at least have free will. I don't see any evidence in the manga or anime that would suggest that the people of Crystal Tokyo have no free will. Just because no one voted the king and queen into office doesn't mean that the people are being oppressed or resent their rule in any way.

I thought the Dark Moon clan wasn't from Crystal Tokyo... maybe I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've seen the R season and I've never read the manga version sweatdrop Now that I think about it, we never do see the people of Crystal Tokyo do we? Kinda weird, but then again the people themselves were never pivotal to the plot.

I can't remember how it goes in the anime, but in the manga they are described as rebels who reject the longevity of those touched by the crystal's power. So it would seem that they were citizens of Crystal Tokyo at some point. Other than them, you don't really see any of the population so its impossible to guess how they might feel about anything. sweatdrop

It was something like they were banishing away to I guess the "dark moon" where no life really existed...which is why they went back in the past to reclaim that earth.

I think this whole discussion almost goes hand in hand with the one about Usagi and Chaos.
Ultimately, a utopian world which lacks any sort of evil just seems highly imbalanced. And everyone being immortal is just kind of creepy. I mean, Chibi-Usa's, what? 200? I mean, dear God, how long was she a baby? So many diapers... gonk

It makes sense if you look at it from the view of the original rebels. Both the Black Moon Rebels and Endymion's people looked at the White Moon as Imperialists who didn't have Earth's best interests at heart and just wanted to control everything with THEIR ways of life. 3nodding Granted, the Black Moon 'Family' was techncially just as bad. sweatdrop

i think that's an invalid argument because we aren't given enough information about crystal tokyo to make such a decision. we don't know exactly how neo~serenity and endymion came to power, and we don't even know how the people being governed feel about it. even then, we don't know any specifics about the government. how do we know that there isn't some form of legislature that does the actual governing under the figurehead of a monarchy. the whole topic seems kind of irrelevant to me...

She grew normally up to a certain point, then stopped and no one was able to figure out why.
