Formed around 1988 with the drumer Dave Grohl and the bassist Chris (Krist) Novoselic playing at a local club when they ran into guitarist Kurt Cobain who was in another band at the time.
The three decided to form their own band called "Nirvana" aptly named after the harmonious sound that the three could produce together. Their first album "Bleach" was released in 1989 but the album itself did not sell at all due to the fact that Glam Metal was still on the airwaves and that Gunge was not yet into effect. But in 1991 hte band hit it big with their follow up album to Bleach, Nevermind which would become a #1 seller after the Glam Metal Era died down.
With their first single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana began to speak out to the tortured youth of the early 90s. With infectious blasts of Kurt Cobain on left hand guitar, Dave Grohl backing his guitars, and with poetic and suicidal lyrics the band highly appealed to the kids that were always picked on and were always beaten down by the metal heads.
In 1992 Nirvana released their first boxed set which was mostly a remake of their first album Bleach. They called it Incesicides and had live and rare tracks that many fans had never heard of. The boxed set became a collectors item and already Nirvana was writting what would soon to be their last album together.
in 1993 they released In Utero which would be Nirvana's last album with the three original members together. The album failed to compare to their previous album, Nevermind but still fans bought the album because they wanted to hear what Kurt Cobain had up his sleeve. Their first single, Heart Shapped Box captured even more fans to the sound of Nirvana.
Soon after the release of In Utero, Kurt married Courtney Love because to him she was the only one that understood his pain and his lyrics. But then in 1994 at MTV's Unpluged would mark Nirvana's last preformance together. At the live preformance Kurt preformed the ever famous song, All Appologies which was the last track off of In Utero.
On April 4, 1994 it is believed that Kurt Cobain took a loaded shotgun, locked himself in his hotel room, pulled the trigger and killed himself. But many speculated that there was no physical way that Cobain could ahve reached the trigger by himself, so many speculate that Cobain was actually murdered by his wife, Courtney Love-Cobain.
Incidentally, Kurt Cobain's death was never solved and remains a mystery even till today. But in 2005 the two remaining members of Nirvana released, Silver: The Best of the Box. A 3 disc "greatest hits" album with the best of the best songs that Nirvana made including 3 never before heard songs.
As for the remaining members of Nirvana? After the death of Kurt Cobain Dave started his own band project "Foo Fighters" and became quite successful with the band as the lead singer as well as guitarists not drummer. As for Chirs, he left the band with no real direction, virtually disappearing from hte music scene.
As a side note, after the success of Foo Fighters, Dave Grolh started another side band project he called PROBOT. In 2003 with the help of Lemmy from Motorhead he released their self-titled album with the single "Shake your Blood" as the lead off single.
