One of my friends plays Bass Clarinet, and switches to Alto on pieces that require it, but no. I don't know anyone who only plays alto.

We had 3 alto clarinets in the band last year. eek One of them switched to bass clarinet, and the other two only play alto clarinet during concert season (alto sax for marching). Those two, um, suck, though. rolleyes

That makes me sad because Mr. Emery (my band director) made me switch but this other girl that plays it he wont make her switch and she is a 10th grader who played since 6th and she was about as good as I was in the 7th grade and I was a beast man and I was loud lol.

We have an alto clarinet in our band.

One of my best friends plays alto clarinet, and she's amazing on it.

I also think we had 1 or 2 at all-state.

your bd said the alto clarinet was extinct???!?!?!?!?

that's about as dumb as when my bd said that there were no clarinets in jazz music! that was just a slip of what he said though....but yeah, the alto clarinet isn't extinct. it's just a little bit phased out and underappreciated

One of the main reasons the alto and contra alto clarinets have been seen less and less over the years has simply been because of the key of the insrument as well as its overall blend of soprano and bass timbre. Unlike the soprano and bass, the alto and sopranino are in the key of Eb instead of Bb, a 5th apart. Thus, a lot of literature doesn't neccissarily have parts written specifically for it, and doubling on the bass or soprano parts defeats the purpose of having such a rare horn. Currently they are seen most often in larger clarinet choirs of around 8 or more, as well as large symphonic bands that play pieces which include that part. Because so few arrangements played in high school and even college bands have the part, most alto and sopranino players are required to double on either bass or soprano. They are still common enough in proffessional or well funded bands, so they aren't as rare as some people believe. Their primary use is to accentuate the chalumau sounding register of the soprano, giving the depth of color to the song while the sopanos may be in the clarino or altissimo ranges more than likely. When parts are doubled, it is likely the alto will play a combination of the 3rd clarinet parts as well as the bass.

I'll put it this way.

Alto Clarinets aren't used in bands around here at all. Our band room has one, but not the player for it.
