~.~Catch a Falling Star~.~ Within the world and in many others there are hills, hills of all shape and sizes, and even if you chose only the hills that had a clear view of the night sky where the stars sparkled like jewels and the moon graciously lit traveller's way, there would still be many hills to choose from. Most likely, minus the small details of foral life that would vary from place to place, it would still be a hill, with a clear view of the night sky. So it would be no surprise that many years from now, when those who have been raised in a small inn sitting on the bounderies that lead to the great wide world have moved on, that the lady in question would not remember percisely where it occured. For it could have occured on any hill where the sky could be see in all its glory.
But she would never forget the time of night, or what was around her when those very events occured, why it would be as if she forgot the birthing event of her own child. If she ever gave birth that is. What she could remember though, was that it occured on her way back from her travels, when the moon was at it's highest, though the moon wasn't at it's fullest. It's kind of fuzzy whether or not the moon was waning or waxing, but it wasn't a full moon, no a bit short of a full moon she would remember.
And the stars.
She would remember the stars, because it was up there in the night sky among the stars did she see one strange sight. To be honest she had seen a lot of strange things in her life time, but this was just a bit odd, and a bit scary. Perhaps because she was on the road alone when it occured, when the red dust came carrying with it red stars. It travelled across the night sky as if being blown by some unseen wind, and perhaps what made it so unnerving was that the wind was blowing in the opposite direction in which the clould was moving.
It tumbled, if it was possible for a cloud of dust, out of the sky and down towards her. She could not move, even though it was gathering right towards her. Instead out of insinct she held out her hands and as the cloud dipped down out tumbled a bright star, which turned into an orb full of red dust cloud and red stars. It landed in her arms like a large child's ball, the kind one would play catch with on a sunny day.
There was something about this ball... this... orb. It had an energy, a spirit which called out to her, and told her to never let go. It was hard to tell exactly what this spirit was, but she could feel it, hear it in her bones. And so, the lady took the orb home with her, walking along the path as if nothing had happened. Though in the years to come, when those that were raised in the inn that led to the wide world had gone on in their lives, she will have reflected on how that orb was one of those people who have moved on.

~.~Changes~.~ Clutching her shining red ball close to her chest, a little girl who looked no more than five reached up to brush a strand of red hair out of her mixed match eyes. She stared up at the door, she could reach if she stood on her tiptoes, but still it looked so intimidating from where she stood. Perhaps more so to the little girl who stood outside the door of her parents’ bedroom. It was not that she was frightened of her parents, her mother always had a softness about her, and her father even though gruff made her feel protected. No, it was just she had this feeling that something was going to change. This feeling occurred on Christmas day, perhaps it was her imagination but her parents seemed closer somehow.
Not that, that was a bad thing.
Still, she wanted to know what was going on, something was changing and no one was telling her what it was. Her older siblings just smiled knowingly at each other, and said it was a good thing, but didn’t tell her what it was. Her younger siblings didn’t see any change, but then again they were more use to her Daddy. It took Azalea a while to get use to the idea that she now had a Daddy. She didn’t mind though, sure he was very scary at first. He always looked like he never smiled ever, and behind those glasses he was an imposing figure. Sometimes though, if she stuck around long enough, he would give her a sugar crystal to suck on and if she was really quiet she could play beside him while he worked.
If this is what it meant to have a strong protective figure there for you, she could understand why her Mommy liked her Daddy so much. Azalea would never want that to change, but something was changing, and she was going to find out what that was. Taking a deep breath she reached up on her tip toes to grab the knob. With some difficultly she twisted the knob and opened the door to find her parents casually talking. Her Daddy lounged in a chair, his trademark trench coat draped across the table as he sat there with his dress shirt half unbuttoned. Her Mommy was sitting on the bed her wings draped down her back and spread out. It was he, with his dark brown eyes that saw her first, his eyes moving to catch the little girl in his gaze.
“Azalea….” He murmured, “You’re up late.” “I….”
She quietly padded in clutching her ball, she knew it was late, but it was the only time where she was sure she could catch the two alone without any of her siblings listening in. Sometimes she wished they lived in a bigger place, even though the inn was big already. Still, she wanted to have some privacy and a chance to talk to them herself.
“I had a question,” she murmured softly.
The shifting of fabric brought her attention to the bed where her Mommy had slipped off making her way over to the little girl. Kara bent down to pick up Azalea, bringing her back to where she and Donovan were sitting. It made Kara curious as to what the little girl wanted. Settling Azalea on her lap, Kara smiled softly and squeezed the little girl gently.
“So…” Kara murmured, “What sort of question do you have?” “Uhm…. Well…. Is something going to change?” Kara frowned slightly, “Whatever do you mean?” Azalea paused for a moment trying to think of the right way to put this, “Uhm… ah… you and Daddy have been acting kind of different since Christman. Not in a bad way, but… like something is changing.”
Donovan raised a brow, he would have expected that kind of question out of the other children, at least the ones who were nosy, but he didn’t expect it out of Azalea. He supposed though, that Azalea being one of the few children who eventually came to call him father it would make sense.
“Do you mean the way we’re spending time together?” he inquired.
She nodded, and his suspicions were confirmed. Donovan supposed he should have seen this one coming seeing as he knew the risks he was running by becoming a step father. Though he supposed he should have been grateful that there were no other people before him that they might have had fatherly feelings towards.
Kara looked thoughtful, “I see, Azalea,” she murmured gently, “Do you remember hearing about how Elnara is going to get married?” “Yea, everyone was happy, because that means they’re going to be together like the way you and Daddy are,” Azalea nodded. “Well…” Kara murmured, “Your Daddy and I have been together for quite a while, but we never got married or did anything that meant we’re married, and so… we decided now we should. Even though we already live together, but it just makes it kind official.” “So….”
Azalea tried to work that out in her mind, she didn’t see the point of them getting married if they were already married, but it seemed like they still had to get married. She supposed if she looked at it one way it just meant that for certain her Mommy and her Daddy would always, always be together. Also it meant that everyone else would know they were together.
“So… it’s just like letting everyone else know who isn’t part of the family?” she guessed. “Exactly,” Donovan nodded from where he sat with a smirk, “At least for the most part.” “Oh… okay! But then nothing else will change?” “Nothing drastic,” Donovan assured her. “Promise?”
He seemed to sigh as he rose from his chair to sit beside Kara, taking Azalea from her Mommy’s lap. Even Donovan understood that someone like Azalea needed a hug every now and again. She was such a shy child, that she needed someone to reassure her things were not going to get out of her control.
“Promise,” he replied firmly.
That was enough for her, if he said so then it must be true. She was sure that everything was going to fine, if not better than before. It was to this Azalea could sleep well tonight.
