Tita is a young woman in love, but the tradition in her family is that the youngest daughter must remain unmarried to care for their mother in her advanced years. To make matters worse, Tita's beloved marries her sister in order to remain near Tita.
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. Each chapter begins with a recipe that is essential to the story. Who says you can't learn anything from reading romance novels?! It was a required reading for one of my classes in college, but I devoured it in the first week even though we weren't going to be discussing it until the end of the quarter.

Oh, it is a very good book! The setting is in Mexico and I find myself wishing to try some of the food that the recipes mention. At least the Christmas rolls if nothing else!
We watched the movie in class and while it wasn't as good as the book, it did serve a purpose in making me re-examine my views on the kind doctor. I felt even more sympathy for the man.
It might sound like your typical romance, but it is much better and quite the tear-jerker at times.

I've heard really good things about this book...I really should read it! So, it's mostly a romance novel, or is it a mix of romance and question

I loved this book! The spanish movie is also really good and follows the book wonderfully well. I hated that Mother I thought that whole..Tradition was cruel and unfair.

Yes, I agree. The movie did a fantastic job of adapting the novel to film. I think the movie even made you more sympathetic toward the doctor than the book did.

I just love the entire genre of magical realism, and this book falls decidedly within that category. The use of food as a metaphor for the entire spectrum of emotions was unexpected and quirky, yet incredibly effective, because eating is by definition a sensuous experience.

I saw this movie on a romance channel and it seemed entertaining enough but I have forgotten the plot so I may read it then watch the movie again.
