Someone PMed today, and said that she felt comfortable making friends in the books forum because "mean people don't read."
I think this is so true. All the friends I've made (and talk to) on gaia so far have been through books, or atleast common guilds.

I agree with that, to a point. I think that people are mean by choice. But, I also think that book lovers, through reading, have learned that there is no reason to be hostile towards anyone.
If you read a novel, you see the main character's struggles through their eyes, and often times there is some sort of "bully" involved. I think that when you follow the main character through the novel, and see the problems put on them because someone is a downright mean person, you realize that there is no need to be mean.
*Happy sigh*. Yet another wonderful lesson from books. 3nodding

I've never really looked at it that way. But come to think of it, all the book forums I've visited have always been filled with nice people. (With the exception of the Harry Potter sub-forum. People in there are just plain crazy.)

I love Harry Potter, but there are people who I think would stalk and then kill me if I said I thought he was going to die.

I go in there from time to time to catch up on rumors but....
All those "best couple" threads really annoy me.
At least here, and in other book forums, I know I can have a friendly discussion about the main plot of the books I read.

I'd have to disagree.
I mean, yah, a lot of the people in the reading guilds and forums on Gaia are really nice. I haven't met more than a few nasty people on here anyway.
There's this girl that was in my class. She's going to the same highschool as I am now, and we didn't exactly...get along...? Popularity sucks in far too many people around here. I was kinda friends with her one year, but then the popularity thing came into play. There was...a wall. A very, very dense one. xP
Anyways, she and some of her crowd read like no tomorrow. Like me! =D but we just don't get along. There's always going to be that wall built from social life. Nasty and cruel things included.
Besides I can be a b***h sometimes as well. Not as much of one, but still.

This is an interesting thread. It does seem much more likely that the well-read would be more understanding and empathetic than those who haven't broadened their views through reading. I find that the more I read, the more I understand, the less I judge, etc. Of course, I imagine that only applies when you read a vast variety of genres and authors.

I think that it is true up to a point. I've been to other book forums and members were not the nicest people. I'm sure a lot of it was this elitist attitude since it seemed that many of them would read the higher education books or titles that weren't your typical cup of tea. Although bookworms generally do tend to be nicer toward others now that you mention it.
As for the comment on insane HP fans, I think it's true everywhere and not just on Gaia. Some of the people on the forums at MuggleNet scare me in their fandom.

hum...this is an interesting theory...I have to say that I agree. Most people who read have at least unconciously learned a lesson from the books they have read. I mean, it is probably another reason why most teachers make their students read.

Well of course, everyone is human, there are bound to be mean people who do read, but there is a higher precentage of niceness in people who read.
And then there's the elitist attitude. I hate that. Being smart and being an a** about it annoys me more than people being stupid.

RAWR! i say mean people read, its just that nice people are more dominate in social gathering s then mean people hense the "on this forum, on that forum" and everyone is nice why? cause mean people don't do forums where people share a common belief, casue mean people enjy the feeling of singularity
that's what i have to say. but of course i could be completely wrong.... but you never know until you take a sociology course, can you?

People also have two sides. They could pass off as mean to some individuals, or be considered nice by others.
I also think that what a person enjoys reading says a LOT about her/him.

I've never thought about that, but it is interesting. If a person really reads and absorbs the main-character's struggles then yes it can make the reader a better person. When fans get onto a topic they love and are obsessed about, such as Harry Potter, then yes it can get a little scary. Bibliophiles could also be arrogant supercilious gits who think that anyone else is a neanderthal. However, most book-worms I've met are very kind and considerate people.

I can't help buy say that this is a stereotype. I love to read, and I'm pretty mean. And I've met several assholes in the book forum.
However, I like to visit the book forum, because most of the people there are not illiterate, there's not much spam at all, and good discussions can be made.
