ok. first off, this is not a religion thread.

this is a place to openly discuss your own personal views on love, life and religion without being shunned or put down by anyone.

as i have dark views on life, love and religion, i would like a place where i and possibly a few others can voice our opinions regarding Christianity and other religions as a whole.

both believers and non are encouraged to participate if they want to.
state your thoughts and opinions as long as it's not offensive, or meant to be offensive to anyone.

i have no prejudice against any religious person, i do believe in God, i would just like to air my opinions, and see what both, believers and non (in life, religion and love) have to say regarding them. like the Christian discussion in Dragons extended discussion, but perhaps a little more open to different outlooks...

the idea behind it

-in regards to religion:
a better understanding as to why people believe and why people dont, without trying to convert anyone.

-in regards to love:
an understanding to what most people think love is, how they feel it, whether it’s controlled by mind, heart, gut or fate.

-in regards to life:
reading about why people live their life the way they do, what is the meaning behind it etc, just…

there’s a lot of different people in the world, and we have subconscious prejudices or guards against some of them. we dont want to but inside everyone it’s there. i would like to try to just understand everyone better, and let everyone understand me without any misunderstandings…

Okay, I'm posting just to say that I'll be heavily monitoring this thread, because I don't want people going into a flaming war about whatever they discuss. Please do not take offence to whatever someone else has said or not; this is a discussion.

i would just like to ask, does anyone else think the bible is perhaps a little contradictory and maybe a little harsh to todays society?

for example:

is incest forbidden?
YES
Deuteronomy 27:22
Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother.

NO
Exodus 6:20
And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses.

my opinion is based wholly on the bible, and contradictions don't make a very strong case to me.
(ps i may be mincing verses but i'm merely stating an opinion.)

Leviticus 20:9
For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

i dont know a single person who hasnt either disrespected their parents, said something bad against them, and stuff like that.

does every adolescent need to be killed?

[oh and feel free to prove me wrong. i may have missed the point of the verse or totally misinformed.]

No, not at all.

Anyway, God forgives sins and allows us to be free of such punishment. Can't remember exact verses, but the whole forgiveness thing is something that you have to ask for, so those who don't, are likely to end up 'put to death'.

As for the incest thing, no one commented on that in the bible and that was many many years before Jesus came. As far as I know, those verses are just a family tree. Don't ask me why he took his fathers sister as his bed buddy.

bed buddy.

ROFL...*gets up from the floor*...annnnnnnnd I'm over it. Thank you.

Never having been raised in the beliefs of christianity etcetera, I haven't actually put my eyes to any part of the Bible. From what has been posted in this thread however, it would seem that the Bible does contradict itself, but hey, who doesn't contradict themselves? If you were to stick a voice recorder on me for a day, (apart from my many, many watercooler talks) you would hear me contradict myself at least once every two hours. I think the Bible can be forgiven- it is a long book with heaps of text after all.

In regards to the first post,
~on religion: I've always liked the prospect of a higher being, although I do tend to call myself an atheist. If I can find the name of those who believe in the Norse Gods that isn't "Viking", I'll begin calling myself that.
~on love: I think you need to know as a person in the flesh to get my answer on this. I'd say only one person knows how I feel about this subject, because he is my closest confidant.
~on life: I can say nothing but this; Life is short. Start with dessert.

My opinion on religion has become nonexistant. I don't like religion. Any religion. I don't believe or disbelieve that a diety or dieties exist and I don't believe that if a diety does exist, that there is just one path to reach heaven or paradise or whatever your respective afterlife.

Love? I have two views on love.
the first, Love is a beautiful feeling that you feel when you least expect it. So many times I've thought: 'I could never go out with him' and then suddenly I realise I'm falling for the person I thought that about. Go figure xp

The second, Love is a chemical reaction in the brain that causes it to release dopamine, the hormone that makes us feel as though we are in love. Chocolate also causes the brain to release dopamine. I guess that makes chocolate a good valentine gift whee xd

Life... Life is complicated sometimes. So much to learn, so much to do, so much to earn and so much responsibility. You win some, you lose some, there are ups and downs. That's life! The key is to enjoy it as much as you can (and try not to hurt anyone in the process... )!

I love you ViVi!

My view on love, is basically it's giving someone the power to destroy you, but trusting them not to. ((i think i read that in someones siggy and it stuck))...
My problem with that is i dont trust anyone.

And ViVi, as to life... I enjoyed hurting a certain ex who i wont mention... *cough cough* depressive little piece of...

anyway!

i've found a religion that makes a lot of sense, i was talking to ViVi about it about a week ago. i wont mention it for fear of being discriminated against...

and to Phoenixstormclaw (sorry i dont know your real name), yes EVERYONE does contradict themselves, but the bible is written by a LOT of people, over hundreds of years, on what god has told them, and if god isn't a creation by man why would he contradict himself? he's superior to us...

again, just my opinions, no one yell at me... sweatdrop

Hmm...
@ Aimey: To be realistic, in my opinion anyway, it's not really a religion as it is a lifestyle...

Me, I trust too easily...

In what you said, you contained your own answer. Hundreds of years, views and life changed. Read a bit of the bible here and there. Races of men were started, lost, existed, faced threat, and also faced abundant life. If you and yours were to go through phases of just plain existance, phases of threat and insecurity and prosecution, and phases of abundance and happiness, your views would contradict themselves too. Looking back, when you were a kid everything was fine and all good, looking now, how different are your views?

The other point of my answer is that it is written by different people in different places and situations. Its the same thing, some were in a period of abundance, some were in a period of persecution, some were in a period of this is life. And the point is it was written by MAN! And, unfortunately, God didn't act as editor. Maybe if He did it would make more sense. smile Just answering question! smile

My thoughts:
Religion? blah. Its a set of rules. You do this, you believe that, and you follow the rules set by man. I don't believe in religion, I have no religion past defining what i believe. And that is in God, being Christian. Denominations? same thing as religion. They all have sets of rules. It should be down to what you believe, and your faith.

Love? If yu want your love to succeed, you need a best friend ship underneath it. Its a crude way to put it, but it should be your partner is your best friend, and the relationship is best friend with benefits.

Life? Makes sense if you know who you are and what you believe. Doens't work if you don't know who you are, You can struggle, taking on different identities, but your life will only be pure and happy if you know exactly who you are and what you believe.

*feels blown away* lookiong back over what ive just written, Far out ive grown in the last 2 1/2 months since I came back to God. My life has turned around, and its wonderful. I know who I am and what i believe, and i'm living for those beliefs!

1- Honestly? My views as a child were morbid, and they still are. Nothing's changed there. Being horribly scared emotionally as a child doesn't help that, I suppose.

2-Lol...benefits...I've had so many water cooler talks about that...come to think of it, I've had many water cooler talks about water cooler talks...yay!
Also, I completely agree with the best friend statement...pity I don't act on it.

3-Yay for Liz! I'm completely happy about you realisation. Don't let anyone or thing hinder your beliefs! biggrin

I agree with the friends thing. For love to succeed, it has to be based in good friendship. You have to be able to talk and trust each other as friends... If it's based in attraction then it's not going to last...
*sigh*

~on religion:
Not particularly religious, but do believe there is a higher power up there. I've always gone by what my parents have taught me, it doesn't matter what religion you belong to as long as you can live by your conscience.

~on love:
Don't be afraid to give it away even though you may not always get it back, because if you give it freely there will be someone somewhere who will happily give back more.

~on life:
Don't come to your death bed and regret the fact that you haven't lived.
