When the Yu Yu Hakusho series ended, Enki was the sole ruler of the Makai. His one rule was to prohibit demon activity in the Ningenkai, and to enforce that, those who lost in the Makai Tournament were deemed patrollers to guard the kekkai net.
Three years later, there was another Makai Tournament to decide the ruler of Makai for the next three years. The winner continued to follow Enki's decisions, and ensured three more years of peace for both Makai and Ningenkai.
But in the third Makai tournament, everything changed. The winner destroyed the moral base that Enki had set up and allowed demons to freely invade the Ningenkai at will.
Although Urameshi Yusuke was permanently fired as Reikai Tantei six years ago, Koenma asked him, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei (albeit reluctantly) to once again take up their posts of demonslayers. They accepted (with much persuasion on Hiei's part).
The scene opens at Genkai's temple, where, although Genkai is much weakened (and thus made more sarcastic, if such is possible) by her old age, will give a few parting words of advice....

No original characters are allowed. Sorry, but in the situation that the Reikai Tantei are thrown in, little-known characters are suspected as invaders and must be killed. And even the best of characters can get out of hand and turn into non-canon Mary-Sues.
Please stick with canon pairings. This means that Yusuke is married to Keiko, and Kuwabara still loves Yukina.
Characters must remain in-character. We all know what the personalities of canon characters are like; they shall remain that way. (Even if you are tempted to make Kurama sugar-high. Or turn Hiei into some possessive vampire.)
Bashing is NOT allowed. Unless it is in the character's nature to do so, don't bash other characters. (And even Hiei and Kuwabara have a certain amount of respect towards one another.)
I think that about covers it, beside the obvious: Stick with the plot.

If they truly loved Yu Yu Hakusho, they would agree wholeheartedly and say that OCs (or at least, Mary-Sues) are not necessary for a good story.
