I was having a very good debate a couple of weeks ago. It was on the matter of what is right or wrong about Christianity. The person I was debating with was throwing all kinds of things out there that weren't even in the bible. For example, he was saying how smoking cigarettes is a sin. Clearly the bible makes no mention of cigarettes or smoking. He also said that it is our job to judge others. He, of course had no biblical support for his points, but I was just wondering if other people think this way. Do other Christians really believe it is their duty to Judge the World?

Well, I've definitely heard more outrageous 'sins' than smoking. razz But as to judging the world, there's a Bible verse somewhere that says not to judge others lest you be judged the same way. In my opinion, Christians aren't different, just forgiven. We're not in a position to judge our fellow man, just because we've been born again. I believe that job is for God and God alone. But I've seen some people who claim to be Christian and do and say some of the most outrageous and disgraceful things (I'd show a sample, but I think it would get too many people's danders up (it sure did mine scream )) in Jesus' name. The whole thing sounds to me like a version of Bible-thumping. I also think that when dealing with issues not found in the Bible (such as smoking), one should use their best judgement. Sure it doesn't say 'thou shalt not smoke', but one should keep in mind that it really isn't good for your body, and isn't it written somewhere also that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? Not a sin, to be sure, but a vice, and with God's help any vice can be fixed.

At least someone posted. smile I feel like this guild is so dead; I was just trying to give it a jumpstart.

(( stressed Sorry if I haven't been around much guys . . . I've had to work extra to fill in for a co-worker that broke her leg last week . . . please pray for her leg to heal up quickly too, as the place I work at is now understaffed until this particular coworker returns.))
Well, I'd say it's God's job to judge people . . . but at the same time if someone is looking to quit doing something we can help them out (I don't know if that detracts from what you guys are saying though). I try my best to not judge others, but instead try to love them where they are at and try to offer advice occassionally if it is called for or asked for . . . that's all. heart

Doesn't it actually say somewhere in the Bible "Thou shalt not judge"? (Don't know the exact quote or which passage it is, though)
So, yeah, judging is something only God should do. When we start judging others for their sins and even faults-that-aren't-exactly-sins, or for ANYTHING, we're just being hypocrites. We're all sinners, and we all have faults, so we shouldn't judge others on their sins or faults.

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." ~ Matthew 7:1-2 And again it says it here... "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." ~ Luke 6:37-38

Also, "judging" others really turns people off to Christianity. The only reason my mom was saved is because her friend that led her to the Lord said she didn't have to give up her beer (she has since stopped drinking). On the other side, we do need to help keep our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ on the right path.

While it does say in the Bible not to judge others, Christians are guilty of that a lot. And if all a non-Christian (for lack of better word) hears from Christians is how horrible they are and that they're going to hell, they're not going to want to hang around us very much. And Christianity isn't about being perfect and following all the rules of religion, it's about having a relationship with Jesus, who loves all of us despite our sins. Like you said, though, it is still important to help our fellow Christians out when it's needed.

First off it is considered a sin to sm9oke because our body is a temple which belongs to God and we must take care of it, smoking only damages it.
Second we have no right to judge anyone, only God can judge as He is perfect, we have all sinned and we will always sin therefore we are all equal in a sense.
That's how i see it anyway.

Exactly, how can we judge others when we have sinned ourselves?

I don't judge in the first place because whereever I go, 'Christains' judge me by looks alone, and shun me befor I get a chance to speak. THANK GOD FOR THIS GUILD AND FOR PILLAR!!! mrgreen

Yes, we are often judged for stupid things like outward appearence.
Jesus never said following Him would be easy though, so we kinda have to expect the fact that others won't always understand us.
I personally try very hard not to judge by outward appearence and whatnot though. sweatdrop
