So for the concert we're doing with the school bands this spring, my combo needed two songs. We decided to split them up and give one song to me, and the other one our other sax player.
Lately, I've had the Girl from Ipanema in my head, and I wanted to play that. So we've been working on it, and even arranged an outside singer to join us for this.
But our drummer, was pretty upset when he found out the song I chose. Even though he likes Bossa, the song really gets on his nerves. He keeps telling me how overplayed this song is, and how repetitive and boring. Furthermore, he called it "the most hated jazz song, ever." I know it was pretty much just joking, even the pianist and the alto agreed.
Still, is the song really that unpopular with jazz players in general? : ( makes me fell kinda stupid.

Nope not in my opinion it's a wonderfully written song and not at all overdone. If that's so then the same can be said about Caravan and night In Tunesia...
I know everyones opinion will differ here but thats what i think some of the greatest saxophonists ever have played and arranged this song.
In my opinion one of the most hated songs in jazz by any seasoned players would probably be In The Mood when played well it's awsome but it's not the kinda chart directors want to play at a jazz festival.

Yeah, I love this song. And I love how airy and smooth Stan Getz sounds in the recording. They wanted me to emulate that as much as I could for the song, and it's really fun doing that.

No..I think it's a bit like Fur Elise or Stairway to Heaven, to a lesser extent. Overplayed, although still a great song. My personal problems with Impanema is that it has the elevator feel to it, but that doesnt' stop me from liking it.
Most hated jazz song ever though? I don't hate it, but I am getting pretty bloody sick of What a Wonderful World.

The song is good when somebody good does it. I like the original version, the frank sinatra version, and a few versions played by local bands among others. I have heard a couple though, that the musicians totally butchered the original score and the singers had horrid voices. I also can understand the hatred, because yes, it is overdone. I do think, though, that even though it has been overdone, it's still good (unlike some of the songs by bands such as Queen).

Right. And one of the things that make the song great, imho, is how easily it's recognized.
That's comforting.

I don't think the girl from empinema is the worst song (jazz-wise). Not compared to the song that's stuck in my head, anyways. gonk I don't know the title of the song, and even if I did, I'd be hesitant to share it cuz I think some ppl might want to hurt me.... sweatdrop I could tell you the notes of it if you really want to know what song is buggin' me...but why would you??? eek (Trust me, this song's much worse than empinema.)

progression wise the most annoying stuff are rythym changes... god theyre annoying, being all fast and changing every two beats and having an awkward bridge...

Hmmm...I suppose I have started to get sick of In the Mood because it's overplayed.
But it's like Heart and Soul (which everyone at my school seems to love playing, much to my dismay). It's just that they're overplayed. It doesn't make them bad songs.

I like The Girl From Impanima. I'm a drummer and even though the Bossa Nova 2/3 patteren is kinda difficult at first it's still fun to play. I have been working on that rhythem for ever and to finally use it in a song is great, even if i cant play it that well.
