Hey, all. This'll be a section where you can push your own critique about GameSpot's reviews and the peeps from GameSpot that review the games that they do. I myself will be voicing my opinions on a frequent basis concerning different reviewers and why I'm either pleased or peturbed by their reviews.
Right now, I'd like to start with Greg Kasavin and his reviews for Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition for the PS2.
Devil May Cry 3
First, to start with the obvious for some: I am a big fan of the Devil May Cry series of games, 3 especially so. Even so, I do my best to remain as unbiased as possible when it comes to matters of telling things about the game as I see fit, or comparing it to other games. If anything, I'm as honest as I can be in regards to things of that sort.
However, my DMC3 fandom has nothing to do with my distaste for Greg K's review for this game.
Devil May Cry 3, as near anyone that's played it will tell you, is an outstanding game with moderate difficulty. That's right. I said the difficulty was moderate. Let me reiterate one more time. Moderate.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that yes, the first real boss battle in the game against Cerberus gave me trouble, resulting in my having to continue a few times to see what it was I had to be on the lookout for to beat him, as it did with some other bosses but it was by no means anywhere near as impossible as anyone else would have you believe. For someone that is new to the DMC series, or action games in general, yes, it WILL be hard for you, but not so hard that you can't adjust.
Anyway, when someone reviews a game, they are to take into account everything about the game that they can. The good and the bad.
When Greg Kasavin reviewed DMC3, well, the guy basically shot down DMC3 a few points because he thought it was too hard as he started out. He gave only passing mentions of other aspects of the game, and put so much emphasis on the game's "insane difficulty" that it no doubt scared off some players from even wanting to play the game. In the video review of it, he stated that it'd took him two days to finish the second mission of the game. He claims to be an avid fan of fast action games and the like, and that he can appreciate a challenging game, though after hearing about his Mission 2 troubles, and how he nearly "was ready to give up had he not had to review the game", his credibility for those statements went up in smoke. Had he said that he had trouble once he reached Cerberus at the end of Mission 3, and was playing on the Normal difficulty, I could've understood, but the guy said that it took him two days to finish Mission 2. To dock points from a game because you in particular suck at it is pretty low.

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition
Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is, of course, the re-release of Devil May Cry 3, with all sorts of extras thrown in, like the return of the Bloody Palace from Devil May Cry 2, a new boss battle against Jester, whom many were hoping to face in the original, new art and such to unlock, new costumes to unlock, "fixed" difficulty settings, and what is perhaps the biggest deal for DMC3 players, the ability to play as Dante's brother Vergil through the game.
As with his review for Devil May Cry 3, Greg Kasavin has managed to irk me and a few others as well with his more than off look into the Special Edition re-release.
In his review for the original version of the game, he docked points from it because the game, for his taste, was "too hard", droning on and on about the difficulty of the game, giving barely any mention about the other aspects as he went along. The Special Edition addresses people's difficulty complaints by "fixing" the dificulty by adding a new Very Hard difficulty, which in essence is the normal version's Hard Mode, while the esy difficulty, and those afterward live up to their names. It also helps by adding a new form of continue system, which you can use whether or not you actually want to use. Should you choose to use it, you get infinite continues, and the new Gold Orbs, which act basically as lives in your standard Final Fight/Streets of Rage beat-em-up, allowing you to come back directly on the spot.
With all of these tweaks, good old Greg K. should be satisfied, right?
Right...?
Wrong.
Instead, he docks EVEN MORE points from the game because compared to the original, it seems too easy, thanks to the aforementioned difficulty switches and new orb system.
...
Now wait, something doesn't add up here...
It's not like they outright took all of the difficulties out of the game. They simply switched them around a bit, meaning that if you wanted the original game's normal difficulty (which was equivalent to the Japanese version's hard difficulty), you could play it on Hard mode and play Very Hard for the original's Hard difficulty, while Dante Must Die and Heaven or Hell remain exactly the smae.
Also, the orb system is an optional thing. Optional. You choose whether you want to use it, or if you don't want to use it and play it as you would the original.
Now, granted, in this review, he and gave his thoughts on some of the extras. Hell, in some respects, like his thoughts on Vergil's playthrough and how it could have been a bit more fleshed out than it was, I agree with him (those who have fought Vante know what I mean. xd ). But, again, a huge focus in his review was the difficulty, or in his eyes, the lack thereof this time around.
If the game being too hard for you originally was a big issue for you, and those problems were addressed, plus there were extras tacked on for good measure, what exactly should the problem be?
I'm not saying either of the versions of DMC3 should have a perfect score in his eyes(though in my review for the original, I gave it a 10/10 myself), but talk about nitpicking... stare
