Some department of the US Foreign Service or something classified Japanese as a Level 4 language, meaing it's one of the hardest for English speakers to learn. West European Langages like French and Spanish are level 1 langauags. It also apparently means that, assuming you're studying both language with the same intensity, Japanese will take 4 times as long to learn. Like, studying Japanese intensly for 2 years would be equivalents to studying Spanish intensly for 6 months.

In other words, you'll need to be dedicated to reach any point of proficianency. I'm at the end of my third year of Japanese in college and I'm like "What's going on?!"

I've been studying it for three years in school and I'm not even close to fluency. Give me another year and then four years of college and maybe I'll be fluent.

eek wow that's alot of practice! how long would it be if you didn't have a teacher to halp you and your learning of a CD program?

honestly? probrobly forever. You would probrobly have to have a really good motivation or a lot more patience then a normal human.
I don't have japanese in my school, and I just study it on my free time for fun, so I know I will probrobly never become anything close to fluent, but it's just something fun to learn ^_^

whoa... that's gotta be really hard... seeing as how most anime doesn't have decent translations...

I've been studying Japanese "lazy man" style for around 8-9 years now. This has consisted of kana by kana translation of raw manga, translation of songs, and otherwise posting sticky notes with kanji, words and phrases all over anything that I may look at a lot (esp my pc monitors). Since I absolutely can NOT intake massive amounts of solid information, and since I have virtually NO memory, this way has been the best for me, even though it's slow because I tend to not apply myself at all.

Right now, I am not fluent at Japanese, but I can communicate basic ideas pretty well. I understand small talk all right, and even better if it's online and I can look up a word or two I may not know. I know a little kansai ben, which I absolutely love. I know all of hiragana, katakana and can write and read them fluently. I buy only raw Japanese manga, and watch raw Japanese tv shows, and watch my anime in Japanese (subtitles optional)... and with no subtitles, I can pretty much get what's going on unless the vocab is totally unusual. (Eg, say Gundam Wing's military vocab... things like that.) I know quite a handful of kanji, but not all that many. I can write some, but can recognize a good deal more. If I had been TRYING... I mean actually studying all of the great books I've got lying around my house, I'd DEFINATELY have been fluent in it years ago.

My sincere advice... don't just accept what the books you buy tell you. Listen to it being spoken in anime, etc, and get a feel for how people really say stuff... or else risk talking like everyone you meet is your honorable grandmother, or the emperor or something. Likewise don't go off the deep end with the slang. Honma ni... 3nodding

If you have any opportunity to talk to a native, definitely do it. Anime is good, but you might be learning some useless vocab (given it's "cartoon" talk and it's usually unrealistic situations) If you're starting out, reading manga and watching anime aimed towards pretty young kids is good, manga and anime aimed at teenagers might be over your head for a while.

i've been studying close to three years and i'm not even close to fulent xp
tho if you lived in japan, maybe six months to be good with basic conversation and a year or two to be semi fluent, depening on how much you work at...if you force yourself to speak Japanese and ask people to speak Japanese to you, you can pick it up rather quickly, tho if you let poeple only speak english and you only speak english then it's it'll take longer.

one guy i knew that was fluent had studied for 7 years plus lived in Japan for a year...

To become fluent, live in Japan. I've been studying Japanese for over 5 years now and I'm still not confident with my fluency.

My native language is supposed to be Chinese, but I have lived in Australia for most of my life, so in my head, I think in English.

I studied Japanese for only a year but I'm in Japan right now. I'll be here for a month, too, but I knew well beforehand that I was no where near fluency. And of course being here has strengthened that view. Yes, I royally suck at Japanese. x_X And it's hard, especially when the person you're trying to talk to knows less English than you know Japanese. sweatdrop
