He sat outside of the den as a guardian of sorts, gazing across the beautiful lands that he had come to love just as much as his mate and son. Things here were perfect - more than perfect - and for once he felt like he had finally found his place. This was where he belonged, here alongside his golden mate and his golden son. The Pridelands was the land of sun, it was warm and wide with herds of gazelle to feed the growing Pride.

He drew in a deep breath and curled his tail about him, settling his great weight so that it balanced back on his haunches.

Everything's so perfect.../too/ perfect. What if this is the rise before the fall? He couldn't help but worry and it was evident by the small frown on his face.

Today was the day when he was going to ask Maawio about having another family. He was afraid of what she would think, especially after what had happened last time...but...he wanted to be with her so badly and he wanted a chance to raise cubs properly.

To be a true father.

Would she get upset if he asked? And what about Mbari?

He sighed and moved to lay down, ears flicking back to listen to any sounds from his mate or son who were lying in the den.

Perhaps they were asleep...

Mbari was sleeping soundly, in a corner of the den. Maawios had hoped that sleeping apart would reduce his clingyness, as he was pushing adolesence now. However Maawio would often wake to find her only son entwined with her golden paws, his sleeping face content.

She smiled to herself, but she couldn't sleep and the worry was evident in her usually enchanting eyes. Maawio hoped that Mbari would take kindly to his father, and because her son was just like her, sweet shy and forgiving, she knew they would soon form a bond. However she was worried as to what Amari may think. Did he think Mbari hated him?

There were other things on her mind too, ever since Amari had returned to the Pridelands, and she had been in heat, she had been wondering about the possibility of having another litter. She knew that Mbari would accept his parents decisiona dn she had no doubt he would play the role of a caring big brother exceptionally well.

She rolled over, the dust muffling what little sound the action made. Gazing at Amari, it took a decent ten seconds to realise he was standing outside the den, upright and awake. She pulled herself up, with a glance in the corner to check the sleeping adolescent and moved closer to her mate, burying her neck in his mane.

He jolted very slightly at her touch - obviously surprised that she was still awake - but let his shock transform into a deep, lulling purr. His eyes closed and his maw formed a small smile as he enjoyed the warmth of her touch.

"Hello there." He said in a playful and rather flirty tone, shifting sideways a little to make some room for her to sit beside him.

"Thought you'd be napping at this hour." He murmered through half-closed eyes. "Though I'm glad you're not." He turned away his face so that he didn't become lost in the blue pools that were her eyes. "I've had many thoughts on my mind lately." He shifted, turning to glace at his paws.

"You smell different, sweeter. I feel unresistably drawn to you. It puts thoughts into my head...but pleasant ones." He shifted again, gah this was much harder than the first time around. "I don't know how to ask. I don't want to ruin things. Not now, not when everything is going so well..."

Maawio nuzzled him again, and took note of his tone, her own smile a little flirty. Her tail wrapped its way around her back legs, and she glanced back into the den for a second before turning her face up to Amari. "I should be asleep, but I can't, like you said, there's simply too many thoughts on my mind..."

"I can say i've only really experienced this feeling before, and that time we ended up with our beautiful son." She giggled lightly. "I know what your thinking i feel the same and you wont ruin things." She purred, feeling his soft mane against his neck. "I think Mbari would be an excellent big brother, don't you?"

He looked at her with a mix of surprise and love, she knew him so well, perhaps too well. They were almost one mind in two bodies, perfect for one another. She was his other half, she was his world.

He purred softly and moved to rub his head into the curve of her neck, breathing in her scent. "He would make a good brother, yes. You brought him up so well Maawio, he's polite and kind and pure-hearted. I just know he would be the best big brother for any cubs we might have."

His tail flicked, "I won't let you down this time. I'm here to stay and I will help you raise our next family with all the love in my heart."

He grinned, "so, what's my sunshine up to this evening?" He had reverted back to his flirty tone.

Her large blue eyes were filled with belief. She knew Amari would stick to his word this time, and her heart blazed with such emotios that were impossible to fully describe. Love, exictement, coupled with anxiety and apprehension. "Thankyou.." She breathed. "I'm so proud of him, although he is like me in my nervous childhood ways, he is much stronger than he thinks." Her voice trailed off, she didn't want to mention what had happened the day she had left Amari. Mbari just knew something was wrong, and he was there to comfort his mother through her depression.

"I know you won't let me down, I trust you, I love you." She gave him a smile as they broke apart and she held his gaze. "Ohh, nothing much.." Her sweet tone was a little shy.

He stood then and shook his mane, flicking it back away from his eyes so he could glance at her. "You are just as beautiful as the day I first met you." He smiled, gazing into her eyes. "You remember it don't you? It almost seemed like it happened yesterday..."

He turned to gaze across the grass to the sky and smiled softly, "I was at the borders and I saw you by the water. You were so golden, so beautiful. I trotted right over to yah with a smile on my face and my heart beating fast. The first words I spoke, 'hello there beautiful.' And those words are just as true now as they were then."

He laughed, "then I had to go ruin it by falling into the water."

He reached out to bat a paw softly against her muzzle. "Well then I think you should join me." He gave a rumbling, affectionate growl. "Though...what about the kid?" He glanced back into the den. "Should I have a chat with him?"

She laughed quietly. "Oh how I remember that day, i was so taken aback and so shy." She paused, her heart beating fast in her chest. "Remember Amari, you were the one who gave me strength, you were the one who showed me how to love." Maawio looked into the past, the day she tried to escape from her mother, and realised the pridelands was home. Wingu died before she could return home and apologise. Tears welled in her eyes. But this was her future, she knew her mother would be proud even if she wasnt mated to a prince. "Perhaps you should, I'm sure he'll be forgiving."

He laughed and moved towards the entrance of the den once more, peering inside. "Okay, I'll go chat to him." And with that said he turned, pressed his nose against Maawio's and dissapeared into the den.

It took his eyes a moment to adjust but when they did he saw he golden form of his son, curled up with sleep. He felt bad for waking him but it was something that had to be done.

"Hey kid, Mbari, wake up!" He whispered, reaching out to nudge gently at him with a paw.

Squeaking like a cub that had just been born, he turned, his large topaz eyes snapping open. "Hello." He said polietely, sitting up. A few tufts of fur fell over his eyes and he shook them away gently. "Whats g-going on?" He asked. Due to his nervous nature he had developed a stutter, much like Maawio had when she was young. He blinked, trying to focus on his fathers large form in the dark.

He smiled softly and lowered himself so that he wasn't so imposing. "It's okay Mbari. Just me." He turned to glance towards the entrance of the cave. "Your mum just had to leave for a bit so I figured maybe this would maybe be a good time to have a chat."

He wriggled and blinked his eyes, not sure how to approach your subject. "I know you still find it hard being wih me Mbari and I don't blame you for that. But I promise I'm not leaving again, I want to stay and get to know you better."

"The thing is, your mother and I were discussing the possibility of having another family...but I wanted to know what you thought of this first."

He cast his gaze to the floor, feeling awkward. "I know, Dad." It was perhaps the first time Mbari had used the word, but he was beginning to get used to the idea that his father really had changed. "It just h-hurt me, seeing my Mom upset like that..." He paused, allowing his eyes to move up to his fathers kind face. He felt another pang of jealously, but it subsided and he smiled. "I'm sure you'll be a great father, I mean, n-now you know what went wrong right?" He looked worried for a moment. "I'd l-love to be a big brother..."

Mbari would perhaps never truly know how much that one word meant to him. Dad, he was a dad, a proper one! He felt tears of joy p***k at his eyes but he blinked them away, it would not do to cry in front of his son.

"I know...and I never meant to hurt her, I thought leaving would be for the best, but I see now the right chocie would have been to stay and fight for her. I love her desperately and you too. You brought us together Mbari and I've never been more proud in my entire life."

He smield fondly, "I'll try my best to be a good father to you and any future cubs and I know you'll be an amazing big brother. You're so kind and caring just like your mother."

He laughed a little, "and hopefully you'll inherit her good hunting genes, otherwise the poor girl will have to hunt for us both." He grinned.

He laughed at his fathers comments, but felt tears welling in his eyes. "I love you too, dad." He moved foward and gave him an affectionate nuzzle, his heart full of love at the realisation that he did have a father. He was going to be a big brother! "I-i dont hunt very well, I'm s-scared of the deer." He admitted, ashamed at his very irrational fears. "B-but if theres gonna be extra mouths to feed then i-i can try!"

He nuzzled his son back and for the first time felt that things were all falling into place. His son had forgiven him, his mate wished to extend their family and life was wonderful.

"Yeah those deer are scary I agree. I don't want to be tackling one of those again that's for sure...but you can always try hunting something with softer feet. Maybe a rabbit or something? We can practise together if yah like and surprise your mother."

"Y-yeah maybe." He felt relief, relief that he could finally talk to the father which he had before found so mysterious or almost scary. His laugh fizzled out and he looked happily around the den. "I-i just hope Mom doesnt want us to help teach the cubs how to hunt!"

He laughed and nodded, "yeah that's true, otherwise none of the cubs would be able to learn to hunt and your poor mother would have to do it all by herself." He shifted to gaze towards the entrance yet again. "And we can't have that!"

Then with a yawn he stood and took a step in the direction of the outsied, pausing to gaze back. "Will you be okay here for a bit Mbari? I'm just gonna go see your mother."

He let out another laugh, this one was much more relaxed than the last. Topaz eyes dissapearing as he blinked heavily the adolescent yawned. "I-I know, poor Mom..." He beared his teeth in a genuine smile.

"I-i'll be fine." He said quietly, looking sleepy. His eyes followed his fathers trail outside the den to where his slender mother sat and for once he felt content.

With a small nod and an affectionate smile Amari nodded his head, a gesture that spoke silently of his promise as a father to do his best.

Then with a swish of his tail he moved out of the den and into the sunshine. The blues were darkening now and the heat was fading from the air as afternoon began to shift into evening.

It was the same old normal evening where the sky darkened and eyes closed in sleep, but not for Amari.

No this evening promised so much more than just sleep. Tonight, Amari and Maawio would secure their relationship for now and for ever.
