At Jettrick's suggestion, here is a thread for discussion of Doctor Who books. If you have a favorite novel, nonfiction work, or Terrance Dicks novelization, feel free to review/discuss it here.

I like the 8th doctors books, because where the movie failed for me the books kept up the spirit. And there is something to be said for awesome fanfiction.

I love the books...I've only read a few but the ones I have were great. Except The Infinity Doctors...which was rather odd seeing as it chronicled the life of the doctor after he 'retires' so to speak <.< But The Crooked World with the 8th doctor and Divided Loyalties with the 5th were both immense biggrin
Even if most of the so-called 'true fans' have issue with them. Anally-retentive morons O_o

I'm afraid I haven't read too many of the novels. The last one I read, Heart of TARDIS, wasn't especially enjoyable for me......

I've read very few of them, mainly because they are hard to find. I read a very nice 1st Doctor story about the dying Venusians. I would certainly like to read the 8th Doctor stories.

I've read a couple of 2nd, 7th and 8th Doctor books. Mostly they were quite good - I liked The Eight Doctors because it came just after the movie and went over some past stuff and it was fun playing spot-the-episode. The plot was a little meaningless. The 8th Doctor one Crooked World was also good and very funny as it spoofed all the classic cartoons.
The 2nd Doctor one Colony Of Lies, which had a brief appearance from the 7th Doctor, was nice to read but not terribly exciting. The other 2nd Doctor one I read - The Indestructible Man - was downright disturbing for me. As a 2nd Doctor fan I'm more into the light-hearted, innocent side of Doctor Who. Not the, violence torture and murder, not to mention death on a grand-scale, side of Doctor Who. Yes it has to be there sometimes, but this just seemed like a way to make the companions suffer for half a book. Then when the Doctor does get them back he doesn't do much. I wouldn't have minded so much if they hadn't - just near the end after a lot of horrible stuff had happened - suddenly injected these really inappropriate twisted joke references to Thunderbirds. It was disturbing. I do NOT reccommend it to 2nd Doctor fans.
I'm reading The Algebra Of Ice at the mo and it has the 7th Doctor and Ace in it. So far so good. Little violent but the mystery makes up for it.
I must admit I like the IDEA of reading Doctor Who but when I do I start to think 'this isn't Doctor Who'. Some of it reads more like fanfiction. I like fanfiction - but I like it because it's written by the average fan who has a weird/romantic/twisted/funny idea of their own that they want to get out into the world to share with fans who might feel the same way. I don't really want those sorts of ideas off 'official' writers. Or for them to be part of Who-dom. Not to mention most fanfiction gives you a WARNING before hand.
Am I the only one who thinks this way? Perhaps I'm too sensitive. Or have too vivid an imagination when it comes to reading.
Excuse the rant. My internet has been off all day and the mention of books set me off...

As soon as I started buying them, all of my favorite bookstores stopped carrying them. GAH!!!!
My favorite is definitely the fifth doctor one, Deep Blue.
It really stays true to the show, and it's just good fun. "And suddenly, to Mike's astonishment, he (the doctor) was holding Mike's gun in his hand, pointing it at his own head. "now," he said, almost cheerfully, "are you going to let me out or do I have to kill myself so I don't kill you all later?""
hee. I also like "City of the Dead" which is an eighth doctor one thats really crazy, and yet kind of interesting.

meh they are ok but they aren't actually written by the writers of the shows and the newest books don't sound like the characters. Personally the 10th doctor acts like the 2nd in it sweatdrop

I quit reading the 8th Doctor books after the Ancestor Cell mess. gonk I only read Past Doctor books now...& they're hard to find. Last one I read was Spiral Scratch. Not great, but entertaining, with all those alternate universe Doctors & Mels running around! I have a Short Trips anthology I'm slowly working my way through too. Stories just OK so far.

I've read a few, I found them rather easy to come by (before the new series started again), in the school library. Now, everyone's borrowed them.
I've read Grave Matter (6th), Dying in the Sun (2nd), Earthworld (8th), Feast of the Drowned (10th), The Stone Rose (10th), The Ressurection Casket (10th), The Monsters Inside (9th). At least these are the ones that I remember reading.

The doctor reminds me more of the 2nd doc rather than the 10th though confused
