Salve. Not that ranking systems/belts/sashes/cordas are the most important thing in MA... but I'm just curious. What are some of your guys' ranking systems like? Post your ranking system, here. Describe: Are they belts, sashes or something else? What are the colours in order? What are the associated ranks with the colours? This is just out of plain curiosity. My group uses "cordas", which are coloured rope belts, tassled at the tips. They are folded evenly, then wrapped around the waist, and fastened at the left hip, with the slack hanging there. Here is my grupo's graduation system: (Edit 30 May 2005 @ 10:42PM AST): Removed the ranking system that used to be listed here, because it was changed, and I haven't memorized the new system, yet. (Edit 3 Jun 2005 @ 12:10PM AST): Added my grupo's new ranking system.

Mine is your standard karate belt ranking.
White: 9th kyu yellow orange green purple 2nd purple 1st brown 2nd brown 3rd brown: 1st kyu and then 9 more black belts.
Pretty straightforward.

Mine is more or less like Ihabia's, except first you have to earn your uniform, then your white belt:
White Belt Yellow Belt Green Belt Blue Belt Purple Belt Brown Belt Black Belt
We also use the Genin/Chunin/Jonin system, but that's for instructors only. A beginning assistant instructor is a Genin. After a year or two of teaching experience you're bumped up to Chunin. After many years, when you're deemed ready to handle a class on your own (not all the time, but if the instructor needs to leave the room), then you're a Jonin.

Hey, not part of the guild but saw a MA discussion in the Extended Discusion and thought Id check you guys out. Anyway, this is the ranking system for my Kempo school:
White Yellow Orange Purple<--(Your allowed to wear a black gi here) Blue Blue w/green stripe Green Green w/brown stripe Brown Brown 1 stripe Brown 2 stripe Brown 3 stripe Black<--(goes up to 10 red stripes)
We have different gi combinations you can wear at higher ranks. At black belt you can mix a white and black gi. At 3rd degree black you can wear a blue gi. At 5th degree your can wear a red gi. Then at like 8th or 9th you can start wearing Silver or Gold gi, but our master always says those are abit to frilly for him lol.

I may not train in their dojo anymore, but I still remember the system of my old Karate-dojo. As usual they used the old Kyu/Dan-system.
White Yellow Yellow with one green stripe Yellow with two green stripes Green Green with one brown stripe Green with two brown stripes Brown Brown with one black stripe Brown with two black stripes Black
And then you keep the black belt as you advance within the Dan-degrees. The dude with the highest Dan-level in our dojo (fourth degree) pretty much only taught the first class to beginners, after which he spent his time hanging around, doing kata, overlooking graduation, never actually partaking in training. I must say I got a much heavier beating from the 2 meter tall and surprisingly quick second degree and the young and muscular first degree instructors during my time there.
Ah yes, if anything I can at least take pride in the simplicity of our system.

I don't know if I'm able to post here, I haven't joined...... Tae Kwon Do Belt Rankings White White w/ Red Stripe White w/w/ 2 Red Stripes White w/ 3 Red Stripes (3 means ready to test) Orange Orange w/ Red Stripe Orange w/ 2 Red Stripes Orange w/ 3 Red Stripes (My rank) Yellow Yellow w/ Red Stripe Yellow w/ 2 Red Stripes Yellow w/ 3 Red Strpies Camoflage Camoflage w/ Red Stripe Camoflage w/ 2 Red Stripes Camoflage w/ 3 Red Stripes Green Green w/ Red Stripe Green w/ 2 Red Strpies Green w/ 3 Red Stripes Purple Purple w/ Red Stripe Purple w/ 2 Red Stripes Purple w/ 3 Red Stripes Blue Blue w/ Red Stripe Blue w/ 2 Red Stripes Blue w/ 3 Red Stripes Brown Brown w/ Red Stripe Brown w/ 2 Red Stripes Brown w/ 3 Red Stripes Red Red w/ Red Stripe Red w/ 2 Red Stripes Red w/ 3 Red Stripes Red/Black Red/Black w/ Red Stripe Red/Black w/ 2 Red Stripes Red/Black w/ 3 Red Stripes 1st Degree Black 2nd Degree Black 3rd Degree Black 4th Degree Black 5th Degree Black 6th Degree Black (This is our master's rank) 7th Degree Black 8th Degree Black 9th Degree Black This was made using the ATA Ranking System. Here's the link. http://www.ataonline.com/taekwondo/belts/index.aspATA uses stripes to signfy readiness for testing, as you can tell. 1 stripe means you have the basics of it. 2 means you know your form. 3 means you've learned your 1-steps, full form, and are ready for testing. My bad if I am not allowed to post here, and I'll see if I can join on the weekend, I'm busy this week. Again, sorry.

Ihabia Damn, that's an ungodly number of belts to get through.... No, not really. Just the stripes make it seem long. It's not a very large number. Just 11 belts.

I suppose you have a point. How long does it take to get between stripes? Whenever the instructor decides your ready? Also, whats up with the camoflage belt?

I should make a quick mention that in the "Angola" style of Capoeira, there is no form of rank indication used whatsoever. No belts, no sashes, no cordas. Nothing! In the Angola style, you do not reach the rank of "Mestre" through belts. You have to earn the right to be referred to as "Mestre" through years of training and advancement and progression of skill. Basically, you only become Mestre if you truly are skilled enough to be considered a Mestre.

Ihabia I suppose you have a point. How long does it take to get between stripes? Whenever the instructor decides your ready? Also, whats up with the camoflage belt? You do your basic moves, and then you're called up with your belt group and watched by all the class there. You are then given a stripe at the end of the session. The Camoflage Belt is like.....hang on. Camouflage (Camo) Belt "The sapling is hidden amongst the taller pines and must now fight its way upward." The student begins to realize his/her place in the world's largest martial art. The student must now begin to spar in order to promote in rank. Camouflage (greens) is used to hide among the trees in the forest. We really don't need to spar to be promoted, we can spar on our own.

DarklingGlory Bruce-Ganked-Lee The ATA is one funny organization..... Your telling me... next they'll have pink polka dot belts.. Ha ha. biggrin Pink polka dot belts. I don't think that belts should be necessary but there must be way's for people to measure one's ability I guess. I would rather call people by animal names or something that would name them by how they are in battle because everyone is different. Even if they practice the same art, the same idea will not be going through everyone's head at the same moment. Animal names would give them some character instead of making them into a preprogrammed instrument, don't you think. What are your opinions on this fellow MA's?

As I posted elsewhere, all belts are, are a teaching aid. It allows your instructor regardless of whether they've taught you before have a rough idea at a glance what you know and roughly how long you've been training. Thats all they are, they have nothing to do with ability or how good you are at fighting. Person A at blackbelt should be a better figher than person A at whitebelt, but thats not to say that person A at blackbelt is a better fighter than person B at whitebelt
