Salve, everyone. I thought to keep things interesting until I get time to move my Capoeira thread into this guild, I would post a thread of a sort of "training journal" that I could update regularly. I think I'll start the journal right after class, tonight (Fri 13 May 2005). Feel free to post comments as I make new posts.

Got new Abadas! They're very nice! Can't wait to complete the outfit with the corda!

Started out the class with a quick jog around the studio. I wasn't counting, but I think it was about between 5-8 laps or so. Then we did what I like to call the "leap frog exercise". One person stands, while the other person runs up behing and jumps up over them, using their arms to push them selves up high. After a few rounds, we added Queida de Rins to the mixture, then after a few more, changed it to Negativa into Queida de Rins WHILE having a third person attack right after we landed. After this exercise, we had two people hold a rope over which we would leap into Queida de Rins with a partner doing the same. We then spotted each other to do backwards hand springs. I sat out of this one, because I just don't have the back or hip flexibility to even begin a backwards handspring. We then changed to doing Armada Poulada (sp?) against kickpads, then Martelo Rodado against kickpads. We then ended the class with a very energetic and long Roda where it was Toque de São Bento Grande all the way through.

Only 2 weeks and 1 day to our first Batizado! Then in June, we're performing at a multi-cultural festival.

Alright... Well... It's a little hard to describe some of those movements in my last post in this thread, but I'll try...

Queida de Rins: Means "Crawl/Fall on Kidneys". This movement is purely for Capoeira de Angola (a slower, less agressive form of Capoeira). You can either start in a crouching position for this, or you can jump into it. But let's say you're crouching... You lean to one side and place your hands on the floor beside you, with the insides of your wrists facing each other. There should be a little more than 12 inches distance between them. You then lean farther, and tuck your inside elbow against your side, so your inside elbow is against your kidney. Leave your other hand exactly where it is. Lean all the way over to the side now, lifting your feet off the ground and putting all the weight on your arms. You may use the side of your head as a third support point, but a genuine Queida de Rins is done with the head just hovering off the floor. Now, practice moving your legs above you into different positions.

Armada Poulada: Spin 360 degrees, and jump into the air, extending the inside leg, and striking with the knife edge of that leg's foot. Tuck the other leg in. Land on both legs.

Martelo Rodado: Pretty much the exact opposite of Armada Poulada. Spin 360 degrees and jump into the air, tucking in the inside leg, extending the outside leg, and striking with the top of the outside leg's foot. Land on both feet.

Hope that described them good enough. sweatdrop

Forgot to post my most recent class...

Fri 20 May 2005

Had a little more energy, this class. Began the class with a warm up, running around the studio a few laps in one direction, then switch directions and do a few laps that way. We then drilled "Cocorinha" (squat) while running, then after a few times of doing that, we coupled it with a Negativa stretch (see my most recent picture in the pictures thread) immediately after it.

Then we did Queida de Rins and the opening to S-Dobrado (swing into a negativa and hop up into a martelo) back and forth across the studio. Did miserable on the Queida de Rins, as usual. Not my best movement. sweatdrop

We did some kick drills on kick pads, too. First Meia-Lua de Frente into Armada into Martelo. Then added Queixada into Esquiva to it.

That's about it for this class.

Had three workshops and a Batizado on the weekend! Far too much to write about! I can't remember it all, and it'd take up way too much space, anyways. But I can say this: I got bumped up 2 or 3 levels! biggrin

Apparently, as our group went independant, we also adopted a new corda system. Not quite sure how it goes, but I received a Yellow/Light Blue corda, which I do know is at least 3 or 4 levels above the first (Light Green) corda.

So to make up for the absence of a training regimen entry, here is a pic of me wearing my new corda!

Class of Wed 31 May 2005:

Class started early, tonight. Mestre Derli was still around, so he taught class. Class began with a very light warm up. Then he taught us a number of indescribable ways to seriously injure people all the while making it look very comedic. Kinda hard to describe most of the moves, but they all focused on a situation of dealing with a Vingativa quickly and easily.

"Vingativa": Placing one leg behind the opponent's legs, and then barring one arm across their chest, and attempting to throw them down using this position.

That's it for this class. I wish I could describe some of the moves, but they are simply beyond description.

I found out our grupo's new Graduation system. Here it is:

The "Yellow/Light Blue" under "Adults" is where I'm at, right now.

Contra-Mestre Azeitona was away in Ottawa, at our Ottawa branch's Batizado. "Estagiario-Instrutor Voo do Morcego" taught class, tonight. We worked on controlling our movements and working on balance when doing movements at low speed. Also had a small Roda where we focused on "making a game not focused too much on exhibitionism, but also not too much on combat". In a nutshell, "A Beautiful Fight".

Fabinho, leader of our Ottawa branch, was just promoted from Professor to Contra-Mestre, last weekend.

Tue 7 Jun 2005:
Monitora Paula instructed class, tonight. We worked on lots of ground movements. And I mean lots! Contra-Mestre Azeitona should be back Friday. Can't wait to see him again!

Fri 10 Jun 2005

(sorry posting this so late. I'm lazy sweatdrop )

Contra-Mestre Azeitona was still away. Monitora Paula taught class. We started off class working on moving within Ginga, and keeping its timing within the rhythm. We worked more on "up movements" as she calls them. Basically movements that are focused above ground. We had a "roda" (finally!!!). We focused, again, on a game that was slightly esthetic, but slightly combative, as well. A "balanced" game. A "beautiful fight", so to speak.

We're preparing for a trilogy of performances this coming week. Wednesday at a local TV show studio, Thursday at an International Resilience Conference, and Sunday at a Multicultural Festival. I'm not permitted to post information regarding these performances openly on the internet. So if you'd like info about our performances, please PM me.
