Backround (optional): At the closing moments of the classic film King Kong, Carl Denham utters the famous line, "It was beauty killed the beast." It is through that famous line in which we best try to understand the strange creature known as Baby. In fact a more apt quote might be, "It is beauty that is the beast."
Facts on the life of this unique individual are few and far between. Born Sept. 12 1948 into the farming community of Ruggsville County. Baby entered this world as Vera-Ellen and was the classic all-American farmer's daughter... sort of. Her father, Cutter a.k.a. Captain Spaulding, a small time theif and hustler and her mother Eve, a known local prostitute.
Young Vera-Ellen showed early signs of manic behavior psychosis, and leaning towards the family ways when at the age of seven she stabbed another school mate in the eye with a home-made knife.
Trouble became a way of life for the short-tempered Vera-Ellen. In May of 1965 Vera-Ellen made the local papers in an incident involving a local council member Randall Johnson. Depending on whom you believe the story varies wildly. Looking back it seems the seventeen-year-old Vera-Ellen seduced the cousilman and tried to stab him to death with a rusted hunting knife.
Vera-Ellen spent eight months in Spring Tree Women's Correctional facility for girls.
The exact dates are unknown, but it was sometime around 1966 after her release from Spring Tree, Vera-Ellen was desperate for money and posed for a variety of nudie photos. The photos surfaced in several men's magazines. One of the photos actually ended up on the cover of "p***y Cat News". This is now a highly collectable piece of crime history.
Around this same time a violent criminal named Otis entered the picture. Otis had recently befrended Vera-Ellen's father Cutter, and soon moved into the family's house. Otis deeply bonded with his new adopted family, and especially his new sister Vera-Ellen in whom he found a kindred evil soul. Otis nicknamed his new sister Angel Baby.
Neginning sometime in 1970 Angel Baby and Otis began an endless spree of murder and mayhem. All of which is meticulously documented in a series of diaries and scrapbooks that Angel Baby and Otis were fond of keeping. According to their own accounts Anna Sanders, 25, had been the first to die by the hands of this new team. Miss Sanders was strangled with the cord of her bathrobe while she soaked in the tub of her apartment.
A shotgun was used to kill 48-year-old Bernie Nichols on June 30, and Helen Blake, age 35, as they sat in their car watching the sunset over Masapekka River in the Ten Pines Valley. On August 19, 27-year-old Ida Norman Collins was manually strangled in her home. Angel Baby had seen Norma earlier that day and had admired a green suede jacket the girl was wearing. This was apparently the mostivation for the attack.
Another young girl, 29-year-old Jane Simpsons, wife of Sheriff Ryan Simpsons, had been dead for a week when she was found in August 20, strangled with her own stockings, slumped over the edge of her bed. The words "Pig ********" had been carved into her bare chest.
The pair seemed to take a break for several months until December 5, murdering 20-year-old Sophie Martin and 23-year-old Eric Bissette. Both girls were found strangled in their car and covered with a blanket. Both girls had been sexually violated after death. In addition to the molestation both girls bore the teeth marks of two assailants on their bodies.
Baby and her adopted brother excelled at murder. ANyone who drifted into her or his path were fair game.
The strangest incident documented in the infamous scrapbooks is the "Dr. Satan Murders." Apparently around the early part of 1972, Otis and Baby met up with a Satanic cult operating in the lower United States. Whether or not this was a true Satanic cult or just an organization that dealt in extreme underground crime we will never know for sure. But what is known is that Baby indulged in ritualistic Satanic orgies and Black Masses with other member's of the cult.
As the story goes it has been rumored that Baby starred in illegal pornographic movies, under the name Angel Bee, with other girls from the cult. Such titles such as "The Seduction of Sadie" and "Foxy Lady" were apparently distributed on the black market.
This new cult life came to a crashing end with Otis's murder of one of the cult's leaders. Apparently, Otis decapitated a man known as Brother Soloman and later crushed his skull beneath the wheels of his car.
A short month later, still in Alabama, Darci Collins and Garrett Harrison were shot to death, execution-style, in Harrison's apartment. Baby's .32 calibur revolver was left behind at the scene and while the female victim had been formerly involved with one of Brother Soloman's closest friends, police had nothing to link Baby to the killings.
During the summer of 1975 while Otis was off on his infamous "Son of Satan" rampage Baby decided to strike out on her own.
On June 9, 1975, Baby, sporting a black wig, held up a gas station in Anderson, SC. Four nights later, in Clinton, SC, Baby raided an ice cream parlor, rebounding on June 14 with the robbery of a drive-in restaurant in Lexington. A week later, in Augusta, Baby added a new twist, trapping two waitresses in the restroom of a chicken restaurant and forcing the two girls to beat each other before killing the two girls. Twenty minutes later she robbed another ice cream parlor and escaped with cash in hand.
August was another busy month for Baby. Local police were already caller her "The Black Widow Bandit" after her dark black wigged appearence. On the tenth, Baby robbed a market in Beaufort, surfacing in Savannah, on August 12 to wound a female grocery clerk with gunfire.
On August 15, Baby was picked up by local authorities outside Barnwell, SC for hitchhiking and vagrancy. Local police work fail to connect her to the various murders and Baby was released twenty-four hours later.
Within fourty-eight hours Baby hitched a ride from an unsuspecting couple named David and Helen Woodfield. Along the way, Baby slit the throat of Helen and shot David in the head, then deposited their bodies along the side of Rt. 123.
The investigation of "The Black Widow Bandit" soon turned cold as Baby fled to South Carolina.
Baby remained calm for several weeks until she landed in Yazoo City, Mississippi. Yazoo City would proove to be one of Baby's most bizarre crimes yet.
Sylvia Durante, 21, 19-year-old Marsha Weatter, and 18-year-old Kathy Allen, had vanished while thumbing rides along I-55, outside Yazoo City; their corpses were found arranged into detailed and bizarre sexual positions simulating a threesome. Once again Baby carved slogans into the girl's flesh including "daddy's little girl," "most popular," and "Apple Pie".
Police could find no connection between this crime and the "Black Widow" crimes, and the case went unsolved for years.
Sometime in the winter of 1976, baby returned to Ruggsville and resumed her life on the Firefly farm.
As with her adopted brother... the worst was yet to come.
