Calandra lowered her nose to a nearby shrub and took a few short sniffs. There was a scent of wolf on the leaves, implying that someone had gone by fairly recently, which meant they couldn't be too far from where she was. For all Cali knew, they were just around the next bend or over the next hill.

Hunting party? She wondered, lifting her head to let her green-blue eyes scan the forest. If it was, that meant a pack. And if there was a pack...

I've stumbled onto someone's pack lands. The thought made her tense and raise her hackles. She'd have to tread carefully from here on in, because if she did stumble across even part of a pack...

Just because she had survived all these years didn't mean she liked fighting, especially with her own kind. Sniffing the air to make sure the wolf wasn't closer than she thought, she continued on her way with a little more attention to her surroundings, hoping that she would reach the edge of the lands soon and without incident.

Walking slowly along the hunting path, Cassidy was finally getting her ears chewed on.

“You are irresponsible.” The black male was speaking, his voice low and steady. “Jenna was never like this Cassie. Why is it so hard for you to follow orders? I don’t even give you many orders. Hell. I gave you two.” Phib spoke, pulling into view behind a budding holly. With Audi gone the old king had become increasingly more interested in his somewhat delinquent grand-niece. The last thing he needed was losing another. Although Phib might have noted that Audi and Cassidy probably had about as much in common as a rock and a stick did.

Cassidy groaned and shook her head bitterly. “Look, Phib- I’m sorry, but it’s not like I’m-“

The black wolf grunted and shook his head. “Oh, don’t even play that card dear. You’re lucky I’m not your father.”

“He’s not that big of a bafoon.” The brown female spoke faintly, but already knowing she’d picked badly by bringing that up. Phib had been more of a father to her then Jaden ever had been.

“Oh, that would be an understatement.” Phib muttered. “He’s a good man. When you need him, but he’s no parent. All I’m asking is that you keep your post-“

As the two rounded the corner, the black male suddenly became aware of a pale orange creature nosing around the bush corner. At once Cassidy frowned, and flattened her ears. Drat. “Haha...what are the chances...”

Phib gave her the eye, and shook his head. “Your supposed to watch the border here.” He muttered to her stiffly, and slowly trotted towards the other female. Although he had been somewhat short with Cassidy, he seemed at least apologetic to the other new creature.

“Hello there.” The old wolf spoke, his voice thick.

Not even out of sight of the bush, and already wolves had caught her! Calandra froze immediately, taking short and shallow breaths as she tried to decide what to do. Make a run for it and risk them catching her? Turn and fight?

In the end, she opted for turning to at least face her opponent so she could see if he attacked first. There was, of course, no guarantee that the wolf would attack...

When she saw the way the wolf held himself, Calandra felt a sinking in the pit of her stomach. A gamma or loner or adolescent she could have taken, but this... this male held himself in a way that even she could recognize. He was clearly high in his pack- alpha or beta, definitely- and that meant that she was in a world of trouble, and possibly another run for her life. Just like the last pack she had run into, which always caused her no little bit of frustration when she thought of it.

That feeling came in handy in helping her to hold her ground, however, and though she kept every muscle tensed for flight into the jungle-- she was very quick on her feet-- Calandra made no movements that could be considered guilty or .

"Hello..." Cali replied softly, clearly suspicious of what happens next. "I'm sorry."

Oh yes, because that explains a whole lot, an inner voice sniped.

Shut up, she growled in reply, though her eyes didn't stray from the two wolves facing her.

Cassidy smiled sheepishly, and wagged the end of her tail. Oh, drats. As if she wasn’t in trouble enough! Now there was some vagabond on the territory in the exact place she had been supposed to watch. A low groan escaped her throat- something which seemed rather awkward with a smile, and she sat back to see how Phib was going to handle this. She didn’t doubt he’d torment her over it later.

Perhaps she could go find Wrigley...

Distracted from scolding his grand-niece, the large black wolf took a more attentive look at the brown female before him. He’d always been a sucker for the ladies, and now was no different. Had she been male, he might have chased him off simply to show Cassidy how it was done. But there was no reason to be rude to a lady.

“No worries.” The male spoke simply, his voice growing with the kind of audacity a showman had. He was a wolf used to speaking, and he didn’t hide it. “You seem to have caught us in an argument. But, I’m sure my niece is happy to find a reason out of it. What brings you to this place, my dear?”

"I wasn't aware I had crossed onto packlands already," Calandra replied. "I'm just a loner passing through, I promise you; I'm not looking to take territory or cause problems. If you can point me a way to circumvent your lands I'll use that instead of cutting through."

This is so the very last thing I need right now! Calandra thought before daring to look away from the Alpha and down at his niece. She was clearly young for an adult, and had probably been caught playing somewhere she shouldn't have been, or not doing what she was told. Young adults generally still had puppy tendencies. Although she'd only met one pup before for any extended period of time, Calandra had come away from the experience with a rather pleasant impression, although the pup had seemed a little... rambunctious. If that was an indication of how all pups were, Calandra liked them, but was sure they required a great deal of watching.

((I'm assuming Cassidy is a pup, but let me know if she isn't and I'll change that.

Edit: Back from being away, and now I shall edit. X3))

(( Hee X3; Cassidy is an adult who is always shrinking her duties.

Edit: Ew, one line. But I figure I'll add more once it's fixed. X3 ))

Phib chuckled, and pivoted his ears. "You may have some issues circumnavigating the lands." He coyly remarked. "The sea is just below us- there really is no place to circumvate to. Are you looking for the sea?"

((Lol I fixed it.))

"No," she confessed, glancing off to the side and tilting her head. "I'm not looking for anything. Just... living." Calandra looked back at Phib; now that her worry of getting into a fight was gone, her voice had dropped to it's normal soft quality, although she was by no means over-hesitant. "Getting by day by day without encroaching on too many packlands."

Phib purred throatily, and reclined back onto his hips. “Well, I would hate to inform you that your goal probably hasn’t been made for today. But never mind it.” The old king remarked, and rose to his feet so that he could shift his weight to the side of him. “You are just dodging about? Any reason why, or just of preference?” It certainly was not the first wolf who had come to this land- but, he was intrigued by those who came while trying to avoid them. The land was a large one- and getting larger, and the wolves about as numerous. It was ironic, actually.

It was somewhat tragic in a way, too. He liked females- perhaps a bit too much, so he was always a bit more heartstrung to hear about them roaming in the nothingness with no resolve. Being born of a high pack, he found the nomadic life to be peculiar and unnatural- and during the times when he had lived it himself, he had felt repressed and unpleasent.

Calandra's eyes flashed darkly and she looked away at the reminder of her past. She didn't want to think about that, and avoided the topic whenever possible.

"Necessity," she replied shortly. "Few packs from where I'm from would even consider drifters, and even pups who are accepted from the wilds when they have no parents are few and far between. They're... picky, cautious. So I make my way on my own. Once I learned how to survive, I began to enjoy being a loner. Now..." She trailed off. What about now? How did she really feel about running on her own, no pack to sing with?

Tired, her mind supplied, her body feeling run down just at the thought. Calandra was young enough, but even so, she was an adult and for most wolves this was the time to settle down. Much older and she'd have even less chance of a pack, and more chance of being killed, no matter how smart and well-learned in the ways of loning she was.

((Yes, loning. I made a word. Lol))

The old king reclined, and considered that for a moment. He supposed she was correct- most packs did tend to be weary of lones. And while even he could be taken to looking down somewhat on them- he didn’t see the fear most packs had towards them. Perhaps it was because he was used to big packs. As a child his pack had been practically a city; although that had brought problems in the older years of it’s reign. For his own group, however- there were still wolves to add before it got quite that large. But as it was, it was already perhaps the largest pack in the area.

Phib followed the tone in her voice as it rose, and suddenly fell as she trailed off. He lowered his expression and nodded reflectively. “I understand,” He spoke. “I do not think it is natural for wolves to spend their lives alone. The world is too hard, and the body is simply unwilling.”

“But if you are looking for shelter, you are more then welcome here.”

Calandra just barely held back the need to blink, then lowered her head respectfully.

"Thank you," she said softly. "It's very kind of you, and very appreciated. It's... I haven't had anywhere solid to stay in a very long time, despite the amount off free space still available."

She looked around at the woods surrounding them, then from Cassidy to Phib and back again. "How much land do you have to protect here? Just as far as you can see?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 11, 2006 7:09 pm

Phib quirked his brow, and slowly shook it. “All that I see? It would either be too small a place, or too large a place depending on your meaning. We take up most of the coast between my pack and another large pack to the south.” He remarked, glancing towards the forest. The smell of salt was in the air, and about a few miles down that way they would run into the sea. “It is large enough- I won’t deny it’s not one of the larger territories.”

Cassidy shifted somewhat uncomfortably, glancing towards the new female. She seemed nice enough- although she was still disappointed in her scolding from Phib. No doubt the female probably thought her some kind of child, to still be disciplined like that...

“The woods are large though- even this place is nothing compared to the entire wood.”

"So I've noticed," Cali replied shortly. "Well, with your permission, Alpha, I would appreciate the space. My wander is growing.. tiring." She smiled slightly, then looked over at Cassidy. "And I wouldn't mind working for the place to stay either. If there's anything you need able-bodied wolves for, I would be glad to help with it."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 15, 2006 12:56 pm

Phib nodded his head appreciatively, and shot a quick look towards Cassidy. “We can always use wolves who are looking for a place to stay and willing to pull their weight for it.” Not that such a practice was always expected- or required; but he liked to see the ambition for those who would offer it. “Do you have something in mind?”

"I can do whatever needs doing. Huntings, sentry duty, nursemaid if someone can teach me," Calandra replied softly, but promptly. She took a pause to bite at an itch on her back before continuing. "I'm more used to hunting, though. Being a loner has a tendency to hone those kinds of skills."

((Sorry for the long wait! I've been so busy lately... crying I can barely post in any other place, and so SW has been getting the shrt hend of the stick lately. I'll try to keep up a bit more, I promise!))
