The Maljax is Me

I am directing a play (The Lady's Not For Burning) for my school and something just shocked me... I have only three Y chromosomes regularly showing up for rehearsals. Wait, scratch that. I only ever had three. Dammit. We're at the point where I have cast girls as men.

Y (ha-ha- pun) do males never seem to be interested in this sort of stuff. Granted, this is a PLAY and not THE MUSICAL (that's the only drama that people seem to pay attention to), but yeah, for any men out there, do you have some insight? Or women, do you have some idea?

I dunno, at my high school, the girls actually tend to be a bit more flaky than the boys when it comes to making rehearsals.

I guess it's a matter of the individual's attitude towards the commitment. Some are more enthusiastic about it than others and others make it a larger priority than others. Annoying as it can be sometimes. domokun

I guess straight guys think it would be too "gay" to be in a show of any kind. Many guys, therefore, don't try out, no matter how much they want to. Some do, though. I guess it just depends on how much confidence they have.

See it's opposite where I am. I go to an all-girls school, and our plays and musicals are Tri-school Productions with another all-girls school and a boys school. Theater is one of the few outlets for female contact for our boys, so it's extremely popular. sweatdrop

I sympathize toward the she-heavy cast predicament. When I was in school our shows were always lacking in the male-talent sector. Their winter show this year, which I helped tech, was The Christmas Schooner. A good portion of the cast was the sailors, i.e., men. But in our cast, there were more girls with drawn-on 5 o'clock shadows than there were guys in the entire cast.

We never seem to have enough males at my school. I began directing a one-act that had about 4 males in it this year, yet 2 dropped out, so I had to find a different play 3 weeks before we opened, and we double cast most of the males between casts. I was triple cast at the last minute.

We were lucky enough to have enough good singing males for our musical this year and 2 horrific males who we stuck in the chorus for balance.

I feel your pain. I was cast as Charlie Brown once (You're a Good Man...) and Mr. Bundles once (Annie) due to lack of the male species.

We're pretty lucky at my school. I go to an all-girls school, and we have an all-boys school across the street. Quite a few guys do musicals, and we actually have some hard-core theatre boys who do the play as well. This isn't much of a suggestion, but if you know you're not gonna have many XYs, you wanna (unless you've already been doing this) pick mainly female-driven shows. ^_^

What about "super" males you are XYY and then XXX and XXYY and all thsoe other combonations. Yes they may make up less than 1% of the population but they still matter smile

I've noticed that too. At my college, there is a professional theatre program. The shows are always double cast for the girls, but the guys get to perform every show.

I think it's because the arts aren't seen as manly or cool for guys to do in North America. It seems more emotional, and therefore feminine I suppose. sad

I don't know. At my school we have just as many drama kings as we do drama queens. Which rules. Cuz some of the guys are awesome. Sorry to hear you're having a problem.

I could honestly care less about what pther people think is "gay" and not. I know I'm not gay, and I'm confident enough in my sexuality that I do stuff such as stage acting. I have NEVER liked many mainstream sports like football or baseball for as long as I can remember. I'm weird... I do odd things like Lacrosse and horseback riding. whee I've been stage acting for nearly 4 years now and with about 17 productions under my belt I've got this handled! Yet every show brings a new challenge. In the show that I am doing at the moment (Aladdin) Aladdin (me) is forced to sing much higher than I normally can. I have a deep voice, yet some girls walk up to me and say that I can hit higher notes than they can in the same octive. Practice makes perfect, corny but sooo true. Some girls that I know come up to me and say, "Where did you learn to sing? I need lessons." And I realize that I taught myself! O.o And now as I reread this I realize how far off the topic all that is, so I suppose I'll shut up now. sweatdrop

Near as I can tell, this is just because of gender roles in society. Some things are considered more masculine, and some more feminine. Performance is somthing that society thinks of as "female" for some reason, and it's not just theatre. I've met only a few males who aspire to become any sort of singer (the fad-ish popular forms of music excluded) and almost no men who admit to wanting to become dancers (and even of those I've met, none of them were heterosexual). Poetry also seems to be considered feminine. Prose on the other hand seems to be more "manly", and once you start getting into the visual arts, most people are male.

Crap, I knew I forgot something I was going to put that in the poll. Usually the common anomalies with chromosome 23 is XXX, X "Turner's Syndrome", and XXY "Klinefelter's syndrome."

Last year, when I was in middle school, our productions were all Female because no guys ever showed up. But now that I'm in Highschool, there is an equal balance of guys and girls, if not more guys than girls. Perhaps it's because the guys around here have a tendancy to show off talent and want to be the center of attention and want to like EVERYTHING they can to show off what talent they have or perhaps its just because my school specializes in Preforming Arts.

Ugh, I share you're pain. It seems the majority of our guys think the acting group is "gay" and everyone in it is also gay.

And then the few guys we have complain so damn much! scream

I was in a one act play this weekend, and everytime in the performance when all of the characters were soppose to "Huddle" he said just loud enough for the actors huddling could hear "This is stupid.". Everytime. I wanna scream, if you hate it so much, why are you here? But we're a lil strapped for guys. mrgreen
