What's your favorite guitar solo that's not from a rock or metal song? Mine is Van Halen's in "Beat It." The main riff's catchy too, but he didn't play it.

I would have to argue that "Beat It" is rock. Atleast pop rock. MMMMM pock rocks! Anyway, how about the guitar work on "Country Boy" by Ricky Scaggs. Does Damien Rice count? I don't think he is rock...

I would have to say "what is and should never be" by Led Zeppelin. It was a blues song.

lamb of god - ashes of the wake. its not metal... its PROGRESSIVE metal. surprised
but you asked for a non-rock/metal song... so i would have to say... well... i cant think of any. why? because the best solos are from rock and metal songs.
i tried thinking "what genre besides rock/metal has a solo?" and i asked my friends what they think of your question. and sad to say, whatever genre that is, it is too unpopular for most people to even say they know it.
sorry if you find this offensive, but in my opinion if your looking for a good solo to play, try some pink floyd. they may be rock, but their solos dont really sound like it, and some are fairly easy.

I didn't know that metalcore was called progressive metal now. Anyway... the "best solos" are all subjective.

My favorite metal solo would have to be Randy Rhoads' solo in Crazy Train. To me, it is perfect. It is effectively the epitome of metal soloing, classic or otherwise.

If they didn't have breakdowns, then they'd be metal. But Mathemetologist, if you think that rock and metal have the best solo's, listen to some SRV. It'll blow you away dude. It's blues by the way.
