I'm at level 23 with my RDM and it has been nothing but a pain in the a** to get this far. I have both BLM and WHM as a sub option with out being gimped. I have been asked alot to be main healer but i guess i am not doing a good job at it much. I know that you are not suppose to Cure II unless its an "O s**t" moment but other then that and buffers what am i doing wrong.
Also the orginal question was why in the world is it so hard to get a pt togther as a RDM before level 41 (at that point i get to become a whore, err...i mean refresh whore)???

Get used to it, rdm are not that great before they get dispel and refresh. My advice to you is if someone asks you to main heal as a rdm say no! As a rdm pre level 41 you should try to start your own parties, if you get an invite only accept if they ask you to be a support person. Yiour job as a rdm pre 42 is to back up heal, back up nuke, use a weapon if you want to, but most off all you need to keep every enfeeble you can stuck to whatever your fighting.

redmage can do everything, but can only do everything half a** (except enfeeble). we can cure, we can nuke, we can melee. I say take up the challange to do ANYTHING that party needs you to do. Be versitle! Be great so they remember you and invite you again! For new players main healing can be stressful, but practice and it's not that hard... unless your party set up is unbalenced >_> then it's not your fault. Anyways you probably will find it easier getting to 41 if you offer to be the main healer~

With rdm I always sub blm, I have whm at 37 as well but I will never pt as rdm/whm until I hit 74. My reasons for this is I happen to have the worst luck in the world when it comes to parties. So I will never party without knowing if their total noobs and try to kill off the party I can chainspell + warp.
EDIT: Err, opps this was supposed to go in the subjob for rdm thead sorry.

Wolftin Hell most of the time i get a party that has a PL in it which again i do'nt want to be n00bed
In this case, you need not worry as much for skills as a melee would. If there's a PL you can likely train sword/whatever melee weapon you use just running at the target and if you fall behind on any magic skill, you can easily fix it by going somewhere and spamming it like crazy, or for the option of having people remember you as awesome, contribute to helping others.
Back on Kuja I sometimes got party invites as Redmage just because the leader remembered seeing me around practicing by buffing random people with Protect/Shell, or healing passer-bys. It can save their butts, I train my magic, I can get remembered. Win-win-win? Hell sometimes I just stayed close to a party and acted as an out-of-party backup healer, then they'd let me in when someone leaves (unless it was the party's tank or somesuch). :3
For offensive magic, just go nuts using it on some DCs or EPs. Bind, then empty your whole MP bar on your victim. You have Fast Cast, love it, abuse it. Don't even have to wait for animations to be done, just keep casting the whole spell list until it's dead. XO
I think Divine Magic was the only skill I still had gimped, but that's because banish was the only way to level it. sweatdrop
Other than learning how to do your job when there's no PL, it shouldn't be too hard to keep up as redmage. heart Besides, the feather hat pwns. It's the entire worth of raising it. rofl

Well actually is attitudes like: OMG I'm not healing! That turn people off RDM's. There's a preconcieved notion that mages are spoiled. They are the first ones to 'ditch' a party cause they know they can get another one just as quick. They can be more demanding and tend to want to do things 'their' way or not at all.
So when a party needs a healer and the RDM disbands cause 'they don't want to heal' they only cement this attitude towards mages. And yeah pre-40 a RDM is mostly looked at as a 'back-up' healer when a whm is not available. But yeah smn and rdm both are in the shadow of whm pre-30 as second-string healers.
Honestly healing is not as bad for a RDM unless the party is over-hunting and going after IT+++ mobs. Cure II is more than enough to keep a tank alive. A PLD or NIN, a RDM can main heal. Any other tank you might want another job able to cast cure II and share curing responsibilties. Good news is at your lvl you can solo worms in Korrokola Tunnel.

I hate to say it, but for people on Seraph, when I played, Red Mages were generally only used to get their "awesome" AF attire. I choose White Mage, mainly because I'd rather help people, than kill monsters, so... x3
The WHM AF's hat looks like a condom-- On everybody except the Tarutaru.. ._.;; (Being Random)
