Japanese tourists are kind of funny.
I just recently returned from a vacation in two cities which cater to a lot of Japanese and Asian tourists in general.

I must say, Japanese people really are into designer things.
Which is why I'm amazed that they go nuts when they see Chanel or Gucci here for what we would consider ridiculous as a super deal. After going into Takashimaya, Sogo and other Japanese department stores, I can understand why... Everything is literally 1/2 priced, so go figure why 200 USD is such a steal compared to prices upward of 40,000 JPY for some things.

My sister went into a Coach store to purchase a handbag, and I couldn't help but noticing more than 50% of the people in the store were Japanese, and lined up with the Japanese representative to hear about the newest handbag.

My aunt in Japan took a trip to Guam a while ago, and said that Japanese is indeed used there as the 2nd dominant language, and EVERYONE came back with a Louis Vuitton something who went on the tour.

Has anyone ran into such experiences?

Yeah, when I was in England we went to the British Museum of Science or something... (I totally forget the name) and there were Japanese tourists everywhere. They all seemed to be men too and were all wearing dark suits and carrying cameras. We had to skip the exhibit because we couldn't see anything. gonk I've heard they can be somewhat obsessive. But I think that's true of any kind of tourist, unless you're a lazy person like me who can have just as much fun sitting under an tree in an English garden as I can viewing the crown jewels. I was pretty obsessive about Stonehenge though. I kept calling them "the Rocks." sweatdrop

Well, I know the picture taking thing is true. sweatdrop
I was at a conference in NY in april and while we were having opening ceremonies a group of japanese tourists came in and they took turns taking pictures of each other in front of the main hall. (We were in the main UN building though, so that might just be what any tourist group would do. xp )

That, and my (ENG 111) language exchange partner (I think her name was Minami or something... it was a year ago stare ), she had this book of pictures that she showed me one day. It was fascinating, but I don't think I've taken that many pictures in my whole life. whee

My mom was a rabid picture-taker in England. I tried to deter her by refusing to smile, and for some reason that annoyed her. xd

Well, it seems that Vuitton himself made a speech some time ago, to thank the Japanese because apparently, without them he'd be out of job. He said that Japan represents 50% of his sales!

Hah, I remember doing my college campus tours and having to skirt around all the asian tour groups at Harvard...

...but that was before I ended up at MIT, where I soon found myself taking pictures for all the asian tourists that wanted group photos in front of the great dome. -_-

Why do people come from Japan/China/Asia just to look at east coast colleges? With their 5-year-old children? D: They must have big plans for their kids or something.

When I went to Italy it was the third most common language...there were many Japanese tourists, but they stuck together pretty closely....
