Here in Sarasota, we have only one mikvah. It belongs to the Chabbad here, but usually they let people use it for their periodic Jewish needs (I'm sure I don't have to really go into detail there). However, since it belongs to the Chabbad, the rabbi there adamantly refuses to let un-Orthodox rabbis use it for the mikvah immersion converts undergo. Our solution, in Sarasota?
Use the beach!
Does anyone else have interesting substitutes for mikvot? I'd love to hear of them. :3

Hmmm I guess a mikvah can be done anywhere there's water right? I've heard of people using pools. When some of my friends from my MJ Synagogue went to Yisrael, they were mikvahed in the Jordan River........I think that would be so cool to be mikvahed in the Land.

A mikvah can be any large (I'm not sure of exact dimensions required) body of water that was never in a "Kayle" or vessel IE rainwater or in some severe cases blocks of ice were taken from mountains. Otherwise any body of water fed by running natural water is ok. Pool are only ok if the first something or other amount was all natural rain water, after that it doesn't matter how much water and chlorine you add

The lake at Camp Ramah Darom works nicely. smile
Here on the First Coast, the Mikveh belongs to the Orthodox synogogue, and all the Rabbis are best buds. xp

My rabbi said that even dunking in the sea is okay, however with the way some people dress on the beach I think it would be better not even to go in the first place. It's supposed to be for holiness, not... hevel havalim.
Another replacement - lake. We don't have too many around my neighbourhood though rolleyes . Some people use the kineret I think (and we drink that water? wink )...
Our mikveh has a huge ice block that is connected to the mikveh itself so it constantly keeps the correct amount of mikveh water to keep it as a kosher mikveh.
The 2 mikvehs in our neighbourhood is less than 2 minuites away from my house, and it's 1 dollar for men and free for women... 3nodding .

Lady_Pocky We have a local Mikvah around here, it's really nice, When I was younger my mother told me that only married women went to the Mikvah, that's not true right? I want to start going, but my mom says I'm not supposed to. I think it's preferable that it be married women... If you want the reasoning behind it, I can PM it to you, it's not exactly PG-13... sweatdrop .

I've immersed in rivers, lakes, oceans, outdoor swimming pools after a rain, a reservoir after a rain, and only once -- for my conversion -- in an indoor, specifically designed/built MIKVAH. I've done it in all weather. And yes, there are times I've had to do it in the daylight, because it wasn't safe to go at night, either because of an unsavory element frequenting the area after dark, or because the temperature dropped so low that it became a health hazard, or because the water was home to sharp objects and I needed to be able to see into the water to know where not to swim. And, being the only Jew for miles around when I visit my relatives (other than my bashert, who is an 'interested party' and therefore can't serve as a witness), I had to trust the word of my SO and several cousins, who didn't understand the law, but at least would say "Uh... yeah, your hair all got wet that time."
If it would be respected, I'd start a mikvah/niddah thread. What do you think, boys? Could we expect the males here to remain outside that thread in order that the women could discuss issues of mikvah and niddah without compromising our modesty?
