I'm not certain whether to say that this belongs in the pet section or not.
Either way, I have one retired thoroughbred whom I love dearly, and we help care for the others around the barn as well.

I have a major soft spot for draft/heavy breeds, particularly those two.
I used to know a Friesian/Trekhener(sp?) mix named John Oliver (aka Big John). He was 18 hands high, basically looked like a giant Friesian, and he was really sweet.

I love the draft breeds, but I also have a soft spot for other breeds. The thoroughbred thing because we have one, as I mentioned. :XP: I know a mustang, as well, and she's overcome a lot, so I really like her. And the Appaloosas at the barn are all so clever, it's unbelievable. So, I guess I just basically like any breed of horse.
"It has a tail! I like it!"

sasuke_sakura8 i have 18 of them were still getting another 18 horses i have 1 trakehner, 8 pintos, 9 arabians then were getting 7 ex-race horses, 5 ex-jumpers, and 6 ex-barrel racers I like hearing that "ex" part. =D
I'm not against riding horses, or even competing if the horse enjoys the activity and isn't overworked, but too many competition horses end up just dumped once they are "useless," or they're run too hard while they're in the business. My horse was an ex-racer turned ex-eventer when we got him. He's retired from riding now and has seen more trauma and chaos than I would ever wish on an animal.
I'm debating starting a YouTube account because I made this 5 1/2 minute video about the hroses at the barn we visit. It's not the greatest thing, as the only motion-video I have is of our horse (the rest is pictures and text), but I'm quite proud of it.
People just don't get how much those animals go through.

This thread topic was actually the final push last night for me to make a YouTube account and post the vid. It is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9vCZvb2Vnw.
On my profile is a second horse video of mine, not quite as good, but it's short and intended to be funny. =) Those of you who've ever seen one horse herd another in pointless circles will get what it's about.
The longer video makes me want to make one video about my horse and everything he's experienced, considering that this one only goes over the basics and can't get deeper due to time.

I didn't know that many horses got abandoned! If I ever have the space and money I will try and take in as many homeless animals as I can. I will definitely foster when I get my own place!

I've never seen abandoned horses really at other places, but that's probably because a barn owner has a legal right to remove horses that aren't paid for off the property. Most would have just called animal control and put the horses up for adoption or something. Thing is, our barn's owner is just attached to these horses, and they were already used to their surroundings, so she kept them.
It's kind of sad with those three at our barn that are abandoned. I still don't get what happened. The little palomino Peanut, in fact, is absolutely stunning. His summer coat belongs on the cover of a horse calendar. =O Heck, last summer, he was so bright palomino that his mane and tial were almost lime green. xd Not to mention his cute personality and desperate love to herd mares around him, especially Marbles the Appaloosa. Our barn is pretty full of horses with interesting stories, mainly because Darla doesn't run it for a profit - most of the horses on the property are hers left from when she did Appaloosa breeding.
I consider most of our animals to be "rescues" and such, considering a lot have been taken out of potential bad situations. It's difficult, because I would take more if I could. We just do what we can afford to, both time-wise and financially. Boarding a horse around here costs between $150-$400 a month! gonk It depends on what barn/stable you're at.
That little Cheyenne mentioend at the end, too....I have a before picture when she was thin and that that picture from the summer after...it's so hard to tell that she was the same horse. When she came in, all she could think about was food. She wouldn't even give a person a passing glance. Now, she paws the ground when she gets her grain (especially if you're watching her - how rude of yoU! xd ), and she likes to prance next to you when you're in her paddock and cut off where you're walking. She acts like a horse now.
