Last week my husband and I had his daughter/my stepdaughter admitted to a psychiatric hospital for observation. She is six. She was there for a week and in that time she was switched from ritalin to concerta and pushed up to 27mg of concerta a day. Today they let her come home. She is spending the night with her biological mother and she will actually be home tommorow.

Her diagnosis was ADHD, which I knew, ODD, which I highly suspected and Mood Disorder NOS. It's the last one that is making me feel a little overwhelmed. So far with the med's the hospital said there has been a great improvement.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice. I'm not even sure what I'm hoping for...

I'm familiar with the first two, but what is NOS, if I may ask?

NOS is not otherwise specified which means they aren't sure, mood disorders can be depressive disorders or bipolar disorders

I don't really have any advice, just sending some positive vibes and hugs your way.

I will say that my brother was close to the same age when he had to spend a time in a psychiatric hospital. We had been told over and over, he had ADHD. He was 8 maybe? They advised us to put my brother on Ritalin/Adderall, which my parents wanting the best did.

What is something that is in the side effects that isn't mentioned is psychotic rage episodes. I would seriously advise bringing this up with the doctors. If I recall, Concerta has been under investigation as well for problems.

Well, my brother ended up pulling knives out of the drawer and tried to attack us. Long story short, 911 was called, he spent some time in a hospital. After that, my parents decided against the medication (which of course doesnt' always work). My brother has actually become quite the young man and worked through it with behavioral modification.

I'm a bit concerned about the concerta because it is a medication specifically for ADHD and not mood disorders and I would have thought they would have sought treatment for the mood disorder first...

I always had to watch her because with the ODD and the ADHD her impulsiveness would put her danger.

luna, I am glad to hear that your brother is doing well.

At first we took my stepdaughter to a therapist and she wanted us to start a good listening chart. I kept trying to explain that we have tried that many times that the problem was bigger than that.

Thanks. I'm feeling a little better now that I've had some time to absorb the shock so to say.. I think it helped a lot just by typing it out. I hope things get better. My main concern was getting the proper diagnosis and taking the appropriate steps to help her before school starts. She begins 1st grade in a couple of weeks and I was very concerned about her being able to stay focused for a full day of school. In kindergarten she was constantly having trouble and that was only 2 1/2 hours.

Sometimes writing it out really helps. I can totally sympathize with struggling with the therapists, medication, and just the overall feeling of helplessness. Just remember that you guys are wanting the best and doing the best you can, don't give up the fight if you have to do so. It's baby steps in the beginning, it'll work out. heart

thank you. I was very relieved today. It was the first time in a very long time we were able to go to the store without her throwing a complete fit when she didn't get her way.
