I've heard about him recently and and decided to check out this stuff. I managed to E-Bay a copy of Out To Lunch cheap (under $7 with shipping) and I'm just hearing it now. Damn this is great stuff!
It's also worthy of note that he was one of the great flautists of jazz and his signature instrument is arguably the bass clarinet (he's also an alto saxophonist). He's considered to be one of the first viable flute soloists and the first person to bring bass clarinet to the fore as a soloist in jazz -- oh to hell with it. He's the Jaco Pastorius of the bass clarinet. xp All I can say is..this is very 'difficult' music, if you have time wrapping your head around Monk's Brilliant Corners album (namely the title track) you're in for a wild ride when you hear this. Very complex rhythms and some highly dissonant soloing. Think late Coltrane, I suppose. The bassist and the drummer both move away from traditional time keeping to do some stuff that's plain weird at times, as does the rest of the band. It's also worthy of note that this particular album features no piano; instead it has a vibes player (Bobby Hutcherson) and I can say this much: If you've had a hard time viewing the vibes as 'serious' instrument (due to all the time spent with a xylophone in early music classes, perhaps) Bobby Hutcherson WILL change your mind on this. Excellent vibes playind and it sounds rather 'mature'. Oh, and there's also some guy named Freddie Hubbard on trumpet... ninja
Basically...whether it's this album, his work with Mingus, or one of the other many albums he was a side man on there should be an effort made to go check out his stuff.

Freddie Hubbard is one of the greatest trumpet players that ever lived. I recomend his works. Especially those with Gerry Mulligan.
And I love Eric dolphy, especially when he play with Charles Mingus. They worked so well together.
