This thread is for Classical/Acoustic guitarists (not electric guitarists or bassists who play classic-rock or classical music, but people who play classical guitar. It doesn't matter if they also play anything else, as long as they play classical guitar).

I love guitar in all forms, but my personal favourite is Classical or acoustic guitar. I know most of you are electric guitarists, and that's fine, I just feel there should be a thread devoted entirely to the less electric side of guitars smile

If I thought there were enough classical guitarists on Gaia, I'd start a guild, but I'm sure there aren't, so I wont. I'm not meaning to be elitist or anything, and if anyone objects, feel free to start a thread only for electric guitarists.

This is a place where you can discuss pieces, techniques, models etc.

So, start. Or if you have nothing to say yet, introduce yourselves.

Ok, I'll start. I've been playing classical guitar for over 8 years, and am doing grade 7 soon. I'm currently working on the following pieces:

Leyenda (not sure who it's by)

Suite No. 1 for guitar, by J. S. Bach

Julia Florida, by Barrios (I think!?)

Prelude No. 4, by H. Villa Lobos

Anything I like the look of in "The Library of Guitar Classics"

I'm also currently writing a version of the opening music from the film "The Piano", addapted for classical guitar.

My favourite classical pieces so far are "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams, and Prelude No. 3 by Jean-Maurice Mourat (an easy grade 5 piece, but still really fun and expressive).

When I get big I wanna be a classical guitar teacher biggrin

I've been playing classical guitar since I was 5. And I've found to enjoy it better than playing electric; not that I hate it, but, just saying.

I don't know much Paganini, but Bach is a God. Bach, Barrios, Brower - anyone beginning with "B", basically biggrin

What sort of stuff do you play? (I'm the same - I play electric a bit, but not very well, and only for fun. Classical guitar is my first love (but not my main one, incase Thalia turns up!))

Hmmmmm... I find using a pic on a classical (apart from the fact that it wears out the strings faster) can limit what you can play. Often in classical music you might need to play, for instance, both E-strings and the G-string at once, and as far as I know, this is not possible using a pic. On the other hand, I really should get better at using a pic in general - I get a lousey sound out of my electric by trying to use my nails.

Well done on writing the flamenco song - flamenco is great fun to play+write biggrin

does anyone in here play acoustic with metal, rather than nylon strings?
i prefer the sound quality, but i understand it can make the wrong sound for classical music...any thoughts?

Ah, the classical guitar. To be honest, I love playing acoustics more than electrics. Hell, my favorite electric guitars are all semi-hollows or hollows. They have such a warm earthy feel to it (not sure if that makes sense) and just have so much flavor to them. Not saying electrics don't, but it's definetly much different. You get a 12 string acoustic, you have yourself a party heart

I play a Yamaha with steel Ernie Ball strings. Picked her up at Sam's Club for 50 bucks. But everyone i've played for doesn't believe it =p

The thing you have to be careful about with steel strings is that if it's not an acoustic made to be used with steel strings, it'll bend the neck over time (time being a few years... not overnight) so make sure your acoustic is made for steel strings (ask the guy at the guitar shop if you don't know yourself). Steel strings have a completely different feel to them, sound-wise, so choose whatever works for your music 3nodding

I started playing guitar by teaching myself classical, fingerpicking is wonderful. Problem is, im finding it hard to progress with my learning with the crappy steel string i have, so ive been thinking about a classical.

Does anyone have any suggestions on classicals? Nothing too fancy, just something to get the job done...
