Here's the deal- I just found out from my sister that my school will be doing the musical first, this year (we usually do one play, one musical, and then one-act) and that the auditions are the first week of school. Well...That leaves me with nine days to figure out which song I want to sing, and to practise it and schtuff....
So, what I wanna know is:
Do you have any good ideas of a short song that's catchy someone could audition with? Do you have any typical audition songs? What's your voice type?

I'm an alto. DO NOT do 'On my Own' from Les Miserables. Everybody does it. For auditions, I typically sing 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' (Phantom).

|Love me|
"On My Own" may be over-done, but it is good if you can make it sound phenomenal.
I am primarily a mezzo-soprano but I can sing alto and soprano. I would suggest "There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q.

I go to an odd school, I suppose, then...most people sing the jingle from the Oscar Meyer commercials. sweatdrop And they still get parts. I'm an alto, I think (I haven't had much musical experience, yet) and I was thinking of doing a piece of a song either from Avenue Q or Wicked a capella, since I know those musicals really well.
So, I'll consider "There's a Fine, Fine Line" if I can sing that comfortably. 3nodding Thanks for the suggestion.

Hmmm. I'm a Soprano, but a good Alto-ish song I've heard is "How Could I Ever Know" from Secret Garden. If that helps. 3nodding

Theatre teachers always really appreciate it when student do music from old musicals... Everyone knows phantom and rent, a lot of people know avenue Q and Wicked... However, if you did something from, oh, Pajama Game or something, the teacher will be happy as a clam... If you want to impress them, either sing something that shows your biggest comfort range, and maybe some that has a little full voice, a little belting, and a little falsetto in a small period of time if possible... If you can find something old that does that, your a lucky girl! Tell me how it turns out!

If you can change your voice drastically through a song, "Out Tonight" from rent is very good. "The Wizard and I" (Wicked) got me a lead in Scrooge. "Home" from Beauty and the Beast. I also like "He Lives In You (reprise)" from the Lion King. I did "Think of Me" (Phantom) for my Beauty and the Beast audition.

Think of Me is a good one if you can hit the notes. Fine white Horse from Secret Garden is a fun one too. And stuff from Into the Woods... or most any Sondheim is impressive because it's more difficult but I wouldn't suggest doing them a capella ^^

I think I saw another thread like this but everyone was like 'omg les mis is the most perfect thing you could ever ever choose they will so love you'
I have witnessed people being asked to leave for singing On My Own, so yeah.
I usually use the opening from 42nd street (the opening of the wong, not the musical) and Take Back Your Mink from Guys and Dolls. I got a big solo part in Lucky Stiff when I sang Not For the Life of Me from Thoroughly Modern Millie.
But singing from Wicked, Les Mis, Phantom, Rent, etc. only shows ability, it doesn't show dedication. It makes it look like you went to Barnes and Noble and bought the soundtrack and book and memorized it, instead of researching and consulting with a coach. Note: a good coach will not suggest anything from those songs for an audition.
Oh, and Anything Goes is great for audition songs. You basically can't go wrong. They're all jazz standards like De-Lovely and You're the Top, and there's something for every type. And Secret Garden tends to be underdone (to a point, like Shakespeare's histories) so they'll probably give you the time of day.
I really talk to much you guys, Sorry.

No, you didn't talk too much, at all. You made me think.
I have to agree that at most theatres I'd probably be thrown out for doing Wicked, but...my theatre is weird. People always sing songs that aren't from musicals, or, more commonly, the Oscar Meyer weiner jingle. AND they get parts for singing the jingle.
I've...become a fan of musicals only more recently...I'm really only familiar with popular ones. I have the auditions starting tuesday, so I don't have long to get ready.
I think I'm just going to trust that my theatre teacher knows from my work last year that I'm dedicated.
I don't have any "Coach" I could consult with, especially not this close ot auditions, let alone would I know where to find one...
I'm afraid I may have to stick with Wicked... sweatdrop

If you have to do wicked, do a very underdone song from it... If you can belt like you wouldn't beleive (and not form your chest) do the wizard and I or Defying... If you can't belt, those songs aren't really very good. There actually poorly written and uninteresting, except generally Elphaba can belt so its exciting... Try One Short Day or March of the Witchhunters or something... A song you wouldn't hear very often... And remember to act while you do it...You might think you look stupid for acting with your peice when no one else does, but the directors love that!

I'm kind of in between alto and soprano, can do both
Mezzosoprano, I guess
I have high notes and low notes, but not much power in the extremes
No power below A5 (the one on the middle of the treble scale) if singing classically, need lots of air to belt above A5 if I'm belting
Anyway
I'll just list some good songs for different voice types
A good song for belters who want to show off vocal power and be able to act comedically is My New Philosophy from You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown; that's like my song, and it was the first song that I could belt all of without adjusting the key, since the character can have a nasally voice and you're TRYING to sound annoying x3
A really pretty song is Stars and the Moon from Songs For a New World... not sure what voice type it's for, though
A good song for mezzosopranos is Mother Mary (I think that's the name) from the same musical as above, and you can act through passion in your voice
If you have to do classical-ish stuff but don't want to learn a song that's actually classical, a good song is A Change In Me from Beauty and the Beast; I did that recently when I auditioned for Women's Choir, and I got in : )
A good song for acting and for showing off a powerful voice that can also be very tender is Your Daddy's Son from Ragtime... it has a large range of emotions and can bring your audience/audition-judger-people to tears if you do it right
Hope that helps

This is really stupid of me, but it probably should have occured to tell you guys that the only things I know about music are bascially how to read simple music, what belting is (not how to do it properly), and the ways I taught myself to make certain sounds when I sing...I taught myself to sing, so it's probably horrible. Should I have mentioned that before...? sweatdrop
