I have been asking myself this for a long time. If Erik did not live to be deformed, would he still be insane? Or would he be normal?

I don't think he would be 'insane' per se; but pending he keeps all his genius, I think he will be at least eccentric, if not slightly mad in his own way. He might still be his own special brand of sociopath, but I think having a normal face might tone down the madness Erik often seems to exhibit.

I think he would be fine, only since he didnt have a deformed face he wouldnt've been in the gypsy camp, and madame' Giry (dont know if her name is spelled that way) wouldn've found him and kept him in the opera house, so he wouldnt have ever lived there. so it wouldve been a drastic change in the timeline and story.

He would be more respected among "the human race". No one would have treated him like death because he didn't look like it, so he would have a better idea of how to treat other people. In addition, he would still have those talents so he would be really famous. But he wouldn't be the Phantom.

I agree with the post above. He was a genius, his talents awed everyone. If he was not deformed he most likey would be a very famous figure in just not French history but the world.

Mmm.. That's a good question, honestly, I don't think I've ever racked my brain so much in a long while. x)
I would agree with Fuoko, in the sense that he might be a bit mad in his own little way, and also, with Elanchana, in the sense that he would be more respected and that he might just be able to become well-known, or even famous. But, I doubt he would be 'normal'.

Besides, without his deformity he wouldn't have met Christine. Therefor, his life wouldn't have been any better.

All Genii in this world are partially out of it, in my oppinoin.
Look at great artists and you will find that most of them are slightly mad.
We probably just wouldn't lub him as much. ^_^

It truly depends. On one hand he was likely to be a famous composer/playwriter who was rich and famous. Ofcourse a mental illness would have occured for obviously Erik was not a stable person in reality, adn his deformity was not truly a defomity but of imperfectness against his musical talents.
Then in the other hand he was still famous and known and had the same talents, the only thing was that his face made him unlikable. Ofcourse his life wouldn't much different yet, if you think about it he may have ended up running the Opera house anyways... so either way he could have ended in the same place with a different history... very good question...
besides everyone has to have a deformity someway or another do they not?

You know what i think he wouldn't have been i think any of what he was. I'm sure if his family was rich, he would have grown up to be a gentleman, respectible, maybe a doctor or a lawyer...if he was poor, maybe a pauper that shined shoes then grew up owning a family business. I say that because if you think about it the only reason he is into music was because look at where he grew up, a place full of sound, music, and art. He learned to love them like we all learn to love certain things.For example, If all you are exposed to as you grow up was hockey, your friends loved it, your dad watched it all of the time and thats all you were exposed to, no other sports, no other activities except floor hockey in the summer, then went to a Hockey school and then the NHL, thats all you'd know...like him and music and that was his passion because that was all he was exposed to. That's what I think. But i love him as is....cuz if not, then we would be talking about "That dude on the Sidewalk"...not Phantom of the Opera!! blaugh heart

If Erik was not deformed, then there would be no story to obsess over now would there? But, yes, I think that if he did look normal, that the story would have been completely different. I still believe that he would have his musical and geneious qualities and such. But he would have had an entirely different life. For one, his mother would have loved him. But then... if Erik had not any deformity, he would have never met Christine, and I am sure that he, perhaps would not be the passionate person that he is with his mask. Honestly, yes, he would have had a better chance within society, but some things would be entirely different.
