Ok secular music is anything that is non-christian music for those of you who don't know what secular means. Now I know that with a lot of people this can be a big issue is it bad to listen to secular music or will I go to hell? Which secular music is ok and which isn't? Why are their some christians who only listen to christian music? Why do they choose to limit their minds to something so small?
I've heard all those questions and even asked some myself at one point in my walk with God. However, I'm one of those Christian who listens to only Christian music...All my secular cds have been broken and thrown in a dumpster. However I'm going to put off my complete view on this until a few people response to this, dont' want to overwhelm everyone with a mega-long post.
So there are Christians who don't question it and have opinions and views already formed and then there are some questioning it. So all are welcome to post with questions, opinions, beliefs, convictions, biblical evidence (if needed, however don't take verses out of context please.)

I also only listen to christian music, but I think some secular music with no swearing and good morals is ok. Maybe even some of them are on their way to singing for God.

I listen to everything. Firstly, I don't think breaking all of your secular cds and throwing them away was a great idea. It seems disrespectful to the artist and people who worked hard to make the cd. Secondly think of movies. Is it any different. Will you go see a movie with a bad message or a movie thats not Christian? I mean look at the ones that are Christian, the only huge one is the Passion of the Christ which looks Christian but supposedly is offensive towards Jews which is unchristian in of itself. Also, what Christian music do you listen to, Worship or more subtle Christian music? What about Christian Rap and Screamo?

Songs that are just about sex, killing, drug dealing, destruction, and swearing are not something God can be around. If the Bible tells not to hang out with people who are sinners ( though everyone sins, I mean ones who do not want to change) why would you listen to music that talks the same way as people you are trying to get away from?

Yeah I don't like secular music that much. Christian music, though, is great! Is there anything better than listening to music that praises our Lord? Not only is the music good, but the words speak deep within my soul, and are filled with truth and meaning.
Secular music? Meh...just a bunch of people who are trying to make themselves known. Sure, they have talent, and their music sounds good. But...what's the point? Their music doesn't glorify God. I mean, sure there are some great secular songs....but they're really just meaningless. confused
Well that's just my veiw on it, and it's totally a personal thing. I'm not at all saying that listening to secular music will make you go to Hell. I just personally find no meaning in it myself, and I don't enjoy as much as Christian music that lifts up and glorifies God. biggrin

Personally I don't like listening to secular music. And I use to listen to like Avril, Simple Plan, Tool, Dark Lotus (Like ICP just worse in lyrics), Linkin Park, stuff like that. Also oldies and country. Not all of it was bad and at first I thought my church was stupid in saying that we shouldn't listen to secular music. I was like that's insane. I was careful what I listen to like cursing and lyrics. So I stopped listening to Dark Lotus and bands alike. I stopped listening to Linkin Park and stuff like that. And then I did a program where I couldn't listen to Secular music for two months and so I started listening to Christian music and I was like I can't go back to secular music. It was just so empty and some of the things they sing about is just crazy. My brother listens to this song about a girl singing how she doesn't want to be the fault for this guy pain becuase she cheats on him and she knows she hurting him but she does it anyway. OMG! So lame. I just honestly couldn't stand it anymore but I kept all my secular CDs just incase I decided to give up on this God thing and so I'd still have my music to go back to. (I know lame but thats how my thinking was.) And our Pastor's told us that secular music won't get you sent to hell but it can still do stuff to you. Satan before he was cast down to earth, was the most beautiful angel and angel of music. He was the lead worshiper and everything. Well when he had got proudful and sent to Earth he was still that same worshipper, just not allowed into heaven to sing. Now he was on Earth and can sing on Earthly matters and to glorify things that aren't Godly. And what better way than to attack a generation who's so hooked on music? I'm not going to risk an attack on the devil when I can listen to Godly music that glorifies God. Quote: OutkasTeen I listen to everything. Firstly, I don't think breaking all of your secular cds and throwing them away was a great idea. It seems disrespectful to the artist and people who worked hard to make the cd. Also, what Christian music do you listen to, Worship or more subtle Christian music? What about Christian Rap and Screamo? Ok firstly, I paid for the CDs and they were mine. I wasn't going to leave them around my room for me to be tempted to listen to them. Because if I listened to them, then I would be in rebellion against my Pastors, my leader, and against God. Because it was a conviction for me to give it up. And that comes from teh holy spirit and if I go against a conviction, I'm disobeying. And I'm not going to hand off to someone else and say "I don't think it's ok for me to listen to this so I can grow in God but it's ok for you to listen to it and possibly hinder your walk with God and get an attack by the devil." No that would be worse, because then I would be causing someone to stumble. And far worse it will be for the person who did the tempting, than the one who got tempted. And what about those artist that bash God, aren't they disrespecting me? And for the movie things. One I don't really watch movies that much. The last time I went to the movies was over a year ago. And I don't watch movies that are over PG-13 and I'm almost 18. And for the last two summers I haven't watched anything over PG. Movies with excessive cussing, don't watch. Too much gore don't watch. Too many "adult" scences don't watch. Most of the time my friend closes my eyes for me on that when I watch movies with her but even still I'm very careful with what I watch. I don't even watch Spongebob anymore. I watched part of the movie and stopped watching it. That sounds lame and whatever but they had Patrick in a Hookers outfit, them getting drunk at a bar, and a hitman. That's just wrong, especially when it's suppose to be for kids. I went to sleep while my friends watched it and since then I haven't even watched the cartoon. SO I'm just as careful with what I watch as I am with what I listen too. I use to watch scarey movies. Not the gory kind and nothing over PG-13. Just your classic scarey movies that soul purpose was just to scare you. Nothing wrong with them. Don't even watch those anymore. So now it's not just a music thing for me, I do it with my movie. The only movies I seriously watch Disney movies the most on Disney channel...And most of the time when those music video's come up I mute the tv or turn the channel for a few minutes and go back.

So by saying that your saying that all secular music is bad, although we know that's not true. So, I'm going to name artists who have good meanings and secular music: Gnarls Barkley, Linkin Park, Simple Plan, New Found Glory, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Switchfoot, Three Doors Down, Will Smith and/or the Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeph, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Flyleaf, The Muckrakers, Common, Gorillaz, Yellowcard, The Beatles, The All-American Rejects, Akon, Rascal Flatts, Miranda Lambert, About half of Relient K's songs, etc. Now let me ask you this for those who say they won't listen to any secular music because it tempts you to do bad things, what do these artists say that are going to tempt you to say bad things?
So, I now say, Christian music is great, but God wouldn't want you to limit yourself to just artists that talk about God when there are a ton of other good artists with good messages that you can learn from.

I never said all music was bad and I never said it would send you to hell. And now you are God did tel lme that so now you're wrong. It's a conviction from God that I stopped listening to secular music and Relient K is Christian. At least last time I heard. And Simple Plan isn't good. They have a song called "God must Hate me." Linkin Park once song, people think it's dealing with suicide and cutting, however it was dealing with drugs I think. I'm not quite sure the whole story on it, but people viewed it as cutting and suicide. Not good. And even if they viewed it on the right story, still not good. Switchfoot is Christian too.
Next question, how could you tell what God would want me to do? ANd sure he would want me to limit myself to that. What do you think Satan was kicked out of heaven? He wanted to sing praises to himself and God wouldn't allow it. God is a jealous God and I was made for the sole purpose to worship and praise him. And to know him and make him known.
So Rah, I won't change my opinion and like I said. I don't listen to it and I don't like it, but it won't send you to hell.

Quote: I never said all music was bad Yes, but you said secular, and that includes many good bands that don't say anything bad, many having Christian members. Quote: God did tel lme that so now you're wrong. So God came down to you and said, only listen to music that praises my name. Possible, but highly unlikely that God did that. Quote: Relient K is Christian. At least last time I heard. Relient K is both secular and Christian. They sing about both. Quote: Linkin Park once song, people think it's dealing with suicide and cutting, however it was dealing with drugs I think. I'm not quite sure the whole story on it, but people viewed it as cutting and suicide. Not good. You said "people viewed it as..." That doesn't mean it's what they actually write about. Linkin Park simply talks about emotion. Quote: Switchfoot is Christian too. Not anymore. Quote: What do you think Satan was kicked out of heaven? He wanted to sing praises to himself and God wouldn't allow it. They're not singing songs glorifying themselves, they're singing songs about their problems and emotions. So they are in no way like Satan. Untrue. Look at this list of sins according to the bible: Quote: Galatians 5 (N.I.V.) 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. God doesn't seem jealous to me. Now my point is, you said it won't send you to hell, but you do seem apposed to people listening to any secular music. So I will tell you I'm not trying to change your mind, but show other people that it's not bad to listen to music that is secular and you don't have to feel sorry for it. You and God can be best buds and he won't make you fell guilty about good moralled music not about him.

Too bad. I got convicted of listening to secular music, whether you did or not, I did. And I won't listen to it. And I think it's better if you listen to Christian music but like I said listening to secular music won't send you to hell, as it isn't sin. But God has called me to be set apart from the world and I can't be a leader to people if I'm listening to music that in some eyes can be viewed as questionable. Which is why I even stopped watching certain movies and even got rid of one my piercings. Call it crazy if you will and say I view it all as bad. But if I want to be a leader and it's a possible thing that can cause someone not to trust me or to stumble. I'll drop it like that. And my leader and Pastor have both told me to not listen to it or screamo, so I'd be in rebellion to disobey them. Since God placed them over me.
