The Gaian National Guard guild is a pretty nice, laid back sort of guild which has recently had a revival. Because of this, many of our long 'understood' rules haven't been formally committed to a sticky or announcement....until now.

Note: This thread replaces The Anti-Munch Project, The Antagonism System, Ranks, and more, since it includes the rules for each.

The Anti-Munch Project
aka: don't be these people.

Tanasha
Here's something that I wrote long ago that has since been stolen, altered, and spread around the net. It's basically just a quick list of things that should be avoided in a free-form forum RP, along with psudo-mnemonic names to aid memory. Large portions of the original text died a sad death in a tragic series of server errors and hardware failures, but most of the important parts remain.

The Anti-Munch Project

Here's the (unfinished) list of what we're against:
The people who never miss a single shot no matter how hard it is (Aimbotters).
The people who can't be hit or just shrug it off (god-moders).
The people who never are without a weapon and ammo (idkfa-ers).
The people who have absurdly strong powers (twinks).
The people who 'balance' thier characters by having a massive but irrelevant weakness and massive powers (min-maxers).
The people who use Out Of Character knowledge to get an edge (Miss Cleos).
The people who do things in hindsight (McFlys).
The people who RP other people's characters for them (Puppetmasters).
The people who RP completely irrelevant things (Daydreamers).
The people who RP actions and time against others while the others aren't presant (Shoe elves).
The people who ignore or alter RPs that they don't like (Revisionists).
The people who RP an absurdly time consuming sequence occuring between other people's actions (Speedhackers).
The people who play as characters that are completely impossible (Oxymorons).
The people who arbitrarily declare themselves the winner with instant death attacks (Baghdad Bobbits).
The people who've taken actions before they start RPing (Gaseous Snakes).
The people who pull-in elements that were approved in an unrelated RP (Augustines).
The people who use an existing persona and only RP them when it helps (Batmen).
The people who alter thier character as needed for the situation (Zoicite).
The people who declare thier IC threads safe, but readily attack others (NIMBYs).
The people who gain abilities as they need them with no prior exposure (Trinities).
The people who pick-up things that spawn from seemingly nowhere (Quakers).

In these examples, A will be our Good RPer and B will be our Nasty Filthy Munchkin.

Aimbotters: Especially annoying when using NPCs, as NPCs don't get to argue about munch...
A: Three hundred seventy of my trained assassin gymnasts crest the hill, sight you, and rush toward you.
B: Luckily, I have three hundred sixty-nine bullets in my chain gun! I quickly mow them all down, each taking a single bullet to the head, and peg the last one with a rock in the sternum.

Godmoders: Obvious.
A: Now that you're strapped to the end of a naval cannon, I fire it.
B: Whoosh! I nimbly dodge, somehow forgetting the fact that I'm restrained by three-hundred-pound chain!

IDKFA-ers: Most likely people attempting to emulate Solid Snake or some other cheesy spy-novel hero.
A: You're all out of ammo for all five of your Ingram submachine guns, 501!|). Since you're buck-naked, I know I can now safely step into the open and begin returning fire.
B: Ha! Little did you know, I have twelve shuriken hidden within my pubic hair!

Min-maxers
A: I've successfully broken into the facility which gave you your incredibly 1337 power armor. Now I pull up the file on it. What does it say about weak points?
B: The metal of my armor is... um... allergic to praying mantis urine.

Miss Cleos: Obvious.
A: ((OOC: There's a secret switch hidden in the lamp.))
B: I suddenly think to myself-- why not check the lamp for hidden switches? Call me now for your free reading!

McFlys
A: Ha! Now that the force field is down, I run inside your evil lair!
B: Um... um... there's also a super-secret second force field which causes you to die instantly! I just didn't say anything about it because... um... I had to do my laundry! Not because I just thought of it now! Honestly!

Puppetmasters
A: I step carefully into the room, peering around for occupants.
B: Suddenly a dragon pokes you in the eye. You run screaming from the room, whereafter you go home, make a pickle sandwich, and call your mother to cry about how she ruined your life.

Daydreamers: Not exactly munch, per se, but it does get annoying.
A: In the middle of the intense shootout, I dash across the narrow alley, ducking and weaving in hopes to avoid getting hit. I'm unsuccessful; two bullets peg me in the shoulder, throwing me back into a Dumpster.
B: The bullets make me think back to my days as a youth, when I had to melt down tin soldiers to use as musket balls against the Redcoats... or was it redskins? I can't remember. Anyway, I had to walk uphill all three ways to school and back, running from glaciers all the while. It was torture, lemme tell ya. And then there's the story of how I met my first wife...

Shoe elves: Pretty obvious.
A: ((OOC: Well, gotta go to bed. Big neurosurgery test tomorrow.))
B: Ho, ho, ho! Now that the loser's gone to bed, I can strap his character to a cross and peg him with rotten fruit!

Revisionists
A: You chose the blue pill? Ooh, tough luck.
B: Red! I said red! Don't go pulling that "I can read your previous post" mind game crap, either!

Speedhackers
A: I walk to the door and step outside.
B: Suddenly, twelve men grab you, carry you off to my secret lair in Tibet, and torture you for weeks. When you finally die from the agony, we bury you in the frozen wastes. Hundreds of years later, arhcaeologists discover your frozen body and try to determine if you're another Lucy.

Oxymorons
A: I'm a farmer with a shotgun.
B: I'm a black hole which emits blinding pulses of visible light!

Gaseous Snakes: An advanced (or is that "dumb"?) form of McFlys.
A: I walk to the door and open it.
B: Being a fellow with a bit of foresight, I hooked that doorknob to a car battery an hour ago. You're thrown across the room.

Augustines
A: Given that this RP's technology base is midieval, I happily drive my cart to the market to buy some maggot-ridden meat.
B: Too late! I already got there in my Gundam and blew up everything with my insanely overpowered weapons! And don't start whining, because my Gundam's already pre-approved in the "This Is Not a Midieval Technology Base RP" thread.

Batmen
A: In this Fantastic Four RP, I'll be Ben, the gruff rock-man with a heart of gold.
B: I'll be Reed Richards, the living sex toy who hunts down innocent women to subdue with his incredible flexibility!

The rest of the document is lost to the ages.

The Antagonism System: Part I
Ai Leen
The Antagonism System allows for RPs to have a purpose and a life that cannot be simulated easily with the standard 'players attacking NPCs' system that most RPs employ. In essence, the Antagonism System pits two or more player factions against one another ICly, but cooperatively OOCly, to result in an engaging RP experience and story.

Core Value #1) Each RP 'world' gets its own subforum.

How it works: In application to the Gaia National Guard, each subfaction of GNG already has their own subforum. Under the Antagonism System, the subfaction and their enemy faction would have threads in this subforum. (Gaian Navy and Sushiperror's Imperial Fleet or whatever would share the GN subforum)

Core Value #2) Conflict resolution is done via Faction Leaders first, then up to Guild Crew second, to the Antagonism Designer if things continue to be unresolved.

How it works: Once both factions for a subforum have formed, they will choose a Faction Leader. Faction Leaders are responsible for the operation of their faction, and for negotiations with the opposing Faction Leader. If there's a problem, the Faction Leader attempts to resolve it. If the problem is with a player in the opposing faction, the Faction Leaders for both factions talk it over, find out where the wrong is, and fix it. If the issue remains a problem, the Guild Crew will assume control. If there's still a problem after that, I will step in.

* Note *: I (Ai Leen) am the Antagonism Designer. I am a former Moderator for Barton Town, and a former Gaia Online Omnimoderator, and before that, I was a founding member of the School of Dedicated Role Players. I am known for my impartiality, and known to be fair in my judgements. If that information is still not enough, then for the sake of the Guild, by participating in the Antagonism System, you agree that the Antagonism Designer's decision is final.

The Antagonism System: Part II
Ai Leen
Success/Failure System

Core Value #3) A simple point system called the 'Sucess/Failure System' is put in place of each RP, to help keep the action going.

How it works: Each faction begins with 25 SF Points (Success/Failure Points). These points are assigned by the Faction Leader to characters. These points are used in conjunction with RP, to either force a success, or force a failure. Each time these points are spent, the points are payed directly to the other faction (Like giving the other faction money). For example: ASDF's Nida wants to break into the Lanzeraedi's flagship. Her Faction Leader assigned her 5 points, so she spends 2 points purchasing the right to break in. (ASDF S/F Points: 23 - Lanzeraedi S/F Points: 25+2) Lanzeraedi's Ian decides he doesn't want to let Nida in. He's been assigned only 3 points, so he spends 2 of them defending the airlock from break in. (ASDF S/F Points: 23+2 - Lanzeraedi S/F Points: 23+2)

As can be imagined, S/F Points can be very powerful. There is a hard cap on how many points a single player can have. It's expressed by this mathematical formula: (25/N)*2 - where N is the number of members within the faction. To get around this hard cap, characters can work together to contribute to a total pool of points. Tanasha of ASDF can work with Nida, giving a full 10 points to their effort. This would completely overwhelm Ian....but if he had help... ninja

Note: The number 25 may be adjusted at a later point.

Core Value #4) Story Breaks are the times when S/F can be redistributed.

How it works: Story Breaks occur during any prolonged lull in the RP. Only characters participating in the prolonged lull may receive new SF points. These Story Breaks can be anything from a coffee break, to a weeklong vacation on Isle de Gambino. If a character is participating in a Story Break, he/she is unable to react quickly to danger. They aren't being alert, because they're relaxing.

There are 3 concepts that need to be pointed out now: Remember that Faction Leaders assign points to each member of their group? Nida in the above example had 5. Let's say that after all the fighting was done, Lanzeraedi paid ASDF a total of 10 points. Nida only used 3 points, so she has 2/5 points.

ASDF Success/Failure Points
Unassigned: 10
Assigned: 22

During this Story Break, if Nida was by herself, she could regenerate back up to a total of 5 S/F points, because 5 is the amount of points her Faction Leader assigned to her. The amount that the Faction Leader assigns to you is your limit.

The second concept is: What happens when you take a Story Break with others? If the Faction Leader is not present, then the unassigned points are split among those present (up to the limit). So let's say there are 5 ASDFers total, all resting. Each of them is currently at 2/5 S/F points and there are 10 unassigned points. The points are split evenly: each would leave that rest break with 4/5.

The third concept is: What happens when you take a Story Break with the Faction Leader present? This one is simple: The same as above, but the Faction Leader can adjust everyone's SF point totals while everyone is resting. He can say "Nida, I see you needed more points in that attempt. Your new SF total is 7." And then turn to a computer operator and say, "You didn't get involved at all, so I'm taking 2 of your SFs and give it to Nida." The only limitation to this: The Faction Leader cannot touch SF totals carried by members not in the Story Break.

The Antagonism System: Part III

Ai Leen
Additional notes:
  • Antag assumes that all players involved are mature and wish to contribute to the story. It's an RP aid, not a preventative measure against twinks.
  • Success/Failure Points are based on a zero sum system. While the number of points in the pool may change, the effective value of each participant's points will not.
  • The total S/F pool will be adjusted each time one member of each faction (1 GA soldier and 1 Galaban terrorist) leaves or enters. The amount of adjustment will be governed by the effective value mentioned above.
  • If a member from another GNG branch comes to help and uses S/F points while helping, those points still go to their opposing faction. (If Eileen were to stomp on some baddies for the GA, her spent SF points would still go to the Lanzeraedi, not the Galaban).
  • S/F Points do not take the place of RP. They are meant as a push, a way to do something you couldn't normally do. Think adrenaline rush.
  • S/F Points do not allow you to do things far out of your realm of experience. A sickly person who's never been outside of their room for their entire life will not beat up a martial arts veteran in a fist fight.

Ranks
aka: Where do I start on the ladder?

All newcomers to the Gaian National Guard, with exceptions as deemed appropriate, will start at the rank of Private. Even if your character was a Colonel in his previous military, this is the Gaian National Guard, and here, you start from the Bottom.

GNG Ranks are designed with RP in mind. Unlike US military ranks, the same rank is the same name regardless of what branch you are in. Also unlike the US military, the GNG promotes people from the "enlisted" ranks upwards and into the "officer" ranks. The ranks structure is also less complex with less ranks than real world military ranking...really, you should not even bother comparing this rank structure to real world ranks. The GNG Rank system is entirely different. Here are the ranks:

Ai Leen
-Officer-

General
Major
Captain
Lieutenant

-Non-Officer-

Master Sergeant
Sergeant
Corporal
Private

The General is in command of the entire GNG. This person directs the overall operation of the three forces and has the final word in all negotiations should they wish it.

There are 3 Majors, and they lead the three branches of the GNG. The Major of the ASDF is Tanasha, for example. The Major directs the overall operation of the branch they lead, and unless the General commands otherwise has free reign over their branch.

Captains are the department heads for each branch. There are Captains for each department within the branch, some examples of which might include Logistics, Security, and Medical. Gaian Navy Captains also hold this rank, as do some Squadron Leaders and Unit Commanders.

Lieutenants are the 2nds in Command, serving directly under the Captains. They make certain that the Captain's orders are carried out, as well as lead more localized groups within their department.

All the above ranks are addressed either by their full rank, or sir.

Master Sergeants are the highest ranking non-officer rank. They are usually assigned important duties, such as Quartermaster in the Logistics department. In large military formations, Master Sergeants can operate as group leaders if there are no Lieutenants to fill the role.

Sergeants are respected non-officer ranked soldiers that are most often known for being in charge of training new recruits, but they can hold many of the roles that Master Sergeants can.

Corporals are 'graduated' from the basic rank. This is one of the two 'backbone' ranks, and this one holds authority over the other.

Privates are the true backbone of the military. These are the recently graduated from military academy. Everyone has to start somewhere, and if you're in the military, this is that somewhere.
