In e-sangha..recently someone posted a site that leads to a fundie website you know the usual ones where they slander other religions and such and by no doubts Buddhism was in there. I was reading what they thought about Pure land Buddhism...and other sects. Sometimes it looks like they have some correct information but we cant get it confused with what it really is. For example, they did present some points on Pure land and Amitabha Buddha which was about like 60% correct but the rest was just all lies trying to defame Buddhism >_<"
Any thought on how to distinguish about what they say from what it really is?

It is wise to understand the viewpoints of others, but if slander is involved what they think shouldn't affect you. You believe what you believe. It doesn't matter what other people say. As long as you know in your heart and soul that you are leading a good life others' opinions of your religion or practice shouldn't phase you. You must have confidence in yourself.

I agree with satinandsmoke. I'm also particularly weary of fundamentalism in general, whatever kind of religion it may be. Such people often take extreme positions and try to drag people to their side in order to make their position appear more rational.
As many animals, we humans have a tendency to judge the correctness based on numbers..which isn't a bad strategy in nature... but we sometimes subconsciously pull on people in order to not feel alone and therefore somehow wrong.
So instead of believing everything they say, or getting angry... I would suggest just trying your best to understand them and remain respectful even if they don't all the time. I find humor is sometimes useful to break the ice too. (Like, I tend to counter the threats of going to hell with taking the position that that would be fine thing for a Buddhist...what with all those people suffering and all.)

If they truly slander the Dharma then mark my words they'll get their just desserts in the end.
Also keep it in mind that Shakyamuni went through the same thing when he propagated his teachings.

Gohlico If they truly slander the Dharma then mark my words they'll get their just desserts in the end. Does that matter? I'd rather be concerned with trying to explain my own viewpoint and hoping they'll learn and understand it sometime rather than "well you'll be punished for it eventually"... I mean, unless "just desserts" involves them understanding a lot more...
