Dead Baby Found In Abortion Clinic, Clinic Closed
Authorities Suspect Employee Evidence Tampering

Dave Malkoff

(CBS4 News) HIALEAH Hialeah Police Homicide Detectives are investigating the gruesome discovery of a dead baby’s body inside of an abortion clinic but conflicting stories may prove there's more to the discovery than meets the eye.

The body was found at “A Gynecologists Diagnostic Center,” 3671 West 16th Avenue in Hialeah.

Witnesses tell police that a young woman, whose identity has not been released, arrived at the clinic last Thursday at roughly 22 weeks pregnant for an abortion procedure.

Police say the woman arrived the next day after the procedure complaining of severe pain. Workers at the clinic explained to her that the doctor was not available and she'd have to wait.

The woman was taken into a recovery room and according to witnessess, gave birth in the clinic.

''Employees cut the umbilical cord, put the baby in a bag and walked away with it," Hialeah Lt. Ralph Gracia said.

An anonymous caller, who police believe to be a clinic worker, alerted officials that the baby was born alive and possibly killed. When officials arrived, however, there was no body to be found.

CBS4's Dave Malkoff reported that when police were called to the scene a second time Friday night, they found the body of a dead baby in a biohazard bag.

"In 24 years in law enforcement, I have never seen a case like this," said Hialeah Detective Tony Rodriguez, the lead investigator.

Detectives believe the abortion clinic tampered with the evidence. The fetus was reportedly 12 inches long and weighed 2-3 pounds. Hialeah Police PIO, Frank Gonzalez, believe the baby was born premature and is unsure how the baby died.

The clinic's doors have been closed while the investigation continues and it's believed the clinic may be linked to one in Miramar with the same name that was forced to close by the state in 2005.

Officials are awaiting the autopsy, scheduled for Saturday, to determine the exact cause of death.

No word yet if charges will be filed.

Um... do they really care how the baby died? 'Cause, you know, babies are supposed to die in abortion clinics.

Yes. If it's born alive, they're obligated by law to save it. If it's not in the womb anymore, it's not violating bodily integrity.

Yes, of course...

I wanted to say what was on my mind when I first read it.

It sounds it might of been more than 22 weeks. If I remember correctly, the fetus doesn't even reach one pound until 21 weeks.

In the article it said the baby weighed 2-3 pounds.

It seems to me all they'd need is the COD. Can they get a fix on that or is that uncertain?

Edit: cause of death

But it said she went to the clinic at "roughly 22 weeks pregnant" to get the abortion... (rubs eyes and re-reads)

sometimes the duedate is wrong, and I've known women to lie about when they got pregnant to squeeze under the third trimester ban.

Wow! How clever of them... (Edit: Angry sarcasm, I'm not actually impressed by what they did..)

It's a sad story, but I'm not surprised.

All I wonder is what the mother felt after the event.

If the mother even knew...she could have been told it was taken out dead, that they'd left a piece in or something.

I would assume so, too. But I guess I was interested in her deeper feelings.

To me abortion was already murder, been legal. That's horrible for so many reasons

1. if she waited that long to abort it, then she might as well have waited and gave birth (which she did give birth but probly due to a botch abortion)

2. Then they put the baby in a biohazard bag, and act like it's trash basically

3. If they messed up, they could killed the mother, which shows that abortion could and most likly more dangerous then giving birth.
