{This one time at band camp:

I fell and broke my leg in 3 places and shattered my ankle.
This was last Tuesday. Our band goes 2 and 1/2 hours away when we go to camp, and I happened to injure myself. I'm the first person in over 12 years to do so. It was smokin' hot out this week and I didn't pass out from the heat, or fall in any holes. Nope. I was just walking and I slipped and fell right in front of the trumpets. We were getting ready to tape our music so that the drum majors had a copy and they got to hear me yell
"s**t I broke my ankle!"

Anywho, have you ever injured yourself at band camp??

You know, the usual. Aches from marching (chair-stepping, mind you), thumb hurts from the sax resting on it, scabs on the knoees from dropping to our knees in one count in the dance, Pulled muscles from doing the splits in the same dance.

The usual.

We had a Cripple Van last year due to so many injuries.
One girl jammed her finger in a doorhinge
Another two tripped during the warmup lap and sprained their ankles
And a fourth one fell from the top bunk in the middle of the night and fractured her leg.

Ow...

The only "injuries" we've had are aching muscles and mild collisions with other members during drill.

And that's only happened like... Twice.

Today a trumpet player hit a mellophone (SP?) player, causing his mouthpiece to smash into mouth, and he has braces... Thankfully, they didn't collide very hard...

Well, we don't go away for band camp. All we do is go out to our practice field at the high school all day. Injuries......Umm...We've had people pass out and feel sick from heat [we're in southern Georgia where is gets SUPER hot]. A few people have been hit with color guard flags, but nothin' major. Sore muscles. This past week of band camp, one girl was hyperventalatin' and was sent to the hospital, and another girl hurt her leg or somethin' [I never got full details]. We never have any major problems. Most common thing though is people passin' out/gettin' sick from heat exhaustion.

{I would like to retract my previous statement.

We've been going to Allerton park for almost 30 years, and I'm the first kid to have broken any bone while at camp.

I'm special.

Let's see...last year I was marching and one of the color guard was not in the right spot, so she twirled, and her flag hit my clarinet, so my mouthpiece drug across the roof of my mouth and chipped my front tooth. Still need to get that fixed, but the blood tasted kind of gross.

Head on collision with my friend freshman year. My flute hit her in the mouth, her french horn screwed up my shoulder. We laughed about it, though. 3nodding

Last year (my sophomore year), I had a freshman sax who was shadowing a sophomore sax backwards march right into me and I fell flat on my back when I tried to avoid him (he stepped on my foot and I couldn't move. stressed ).

And this doesn't involve an injury to ME, I know our entire trumpet section marched right into a parked van while we were practicing parade marching for the Battle Of Flowers parade my freshman year. (Of course, that's also the section who managed to get LOST while we marched through the neighborhood across the street from our high school even though they were practically in the MIDDLE of the band. So the van thing's not saying much about their common sense. sweatdrop )

My sister (a flag) hit me in the head ON PURPOSE during band camp freshman year. I started a mini domino effect with f0xyr0xi3bab3 and a couple of our friends while waiting in line for water during our freshman band camp (everyone got at least one little scrape from that incident. xd )

Well, being on colorguard comes with the standard bruises as well as swollen ankles from dance and hitting tehm with flags.... I've marched an entire season with my ankle wrapped. But that's nothing big.

Last year during a sectional we had on field, I tossed and missed my catch- it got me on the head. I remember stumbling off the field, but I don't remember how I ended up on my back. That was scary. It didn't help that I was sick that day and couldn't eat, so I only had water in me.

And today was the first day of our bandcamp. And I was recently diagnosed with Orthostatic Hypotension- pretty much I can pass out from such low blood pressure- and after running and getting back into block, I wasn't feeling so hot. Things kept going black adn coming back, then going black again and I couldn't feel my arms. I told my BD that I needed to sit out for a minute or so to get myself together and went to drink Gatorade. Well. It didn't settle so well. I started to feel nauseous, a band mom was walking with me inside, and I just knelt down, threw up said Gatorade and my breakfast and kept wlaking. I have to say, getting that crap out of my system made me feel better. >.<
But honestly. I've never fallen out before, and here I am on day one of my senior year and I'm throwing up on the sideline. Wonderful. ^.^

I passed out on the second hour of the first day of band camp. sweatdrop I'm not sure if that's considered an injury, but they put it in the newspaper.

last year, there was a block of brass going toward a block of woodwinds. (we were doing this sort of mesh thing) when we were done, either i was wrong or he was, but otherwise we were to close and a trombonist went to attention and when he did so his slide slammed my shoulder. it was sore for a while.

Uhm, I don't think there have been any broken bones in our regiment. We have lots of people who are already injured, but march anway. Lots of knee and leg injuries that make marching for them hard.

I've almost passed out from heat/dehydration.

That was really cool, I was standing at attention, about to do orbit-drill, and all the sudden my vision was filled with pretty blue, red and white sparklies, and there were two copies of my band director. Needless to say, I had to sit out for a while.

Last year I biffed a trumpet in the back of the head with my bell (I play baritone) and my mouthpiece got me pretty hard.

And I've actually made my diaphram cramp from screaming/playing too hard. Heh, yeah.

A few years ago, a baritone player in my band played so loud he lost the use of one of his testicles. Bam.

two years ago, this guy in my section pulled his pelvic muscle. He was well known for his pelvic thrusts at football games so needless to say, there were no pelvic thrusts that year....
