So, I dunno if there was ever an official thing about what this song was about. Even if so, what did you think the song was about when you first heard it, and did your thoughts about it change after listening to it more?

I've heard it's about dildos, or my friend said she thought it was an ode to all girls about creating the perfect guy. My teacher said she thought it was about a girl convincing a guy that she was done with him, but she really still wanted him? I dunno, I think my teacher thought a little bit too much on that one. rolleyes

Well, truely, the song is about lonlieness. When I first listened to it thats what I thought. Mind, it was only because my friend told me before I hit play.

it sounds like it's about a vibrator
but i personally thought and still think it's about wanting the perfect guy.

because amanda had boy problems when she was in high school. so maybe it has to do with that as well.

Taken straight from their website:

"What is the song “coin-operated boy” about? Is it about a d***o? I have fifty bucks riding on this.”
It is not about a d***o. It is about lonliness.

boy problems in high school? relationship problems are never-ending and ageless.

coin-operated boy and first orgasm have a lot in common.

i was reading the lyrics to first orgasm eariler today
the last few lines give it away that the song is about loneliness.

When I first kind of thought about the song, I thought it was like a rub it in your face thing to a past boyfriend, like "See how perfect he is? You were never like that".

But I can totally feel that loneliness thing you mentioned.

Whilst I got that it was about loneliness, I still always have a little image of an actual coin operated boy, stuck in the back of my mind. Actually come to think of it, it's more of an image of a ventriloquist's dummy, with the wooden mouth that moves up and down, only with a little coin slot in the back of the dummy's head. sometimes my own idiocy still surprises me...

My mother found that song when I left the CD in my car CD player. I don't think she 'got it' though (but at least she liked it).

Yes, I think it's about being very lonely.

Fed up with real boys who leave too often and are too easily broken, she (song protagonist), wants a boy who will do and say whatever she wants.

I'm struck by the part "And if I had a star to wish on, for my life I can't imagine any flesh and blood could be his match." Even if she had a real boy, a coin-operated one would still be ideal. I mean, come on. What guy can you think of who would really be as perfect as one who's only purpose is to act as you want him to?

One of the parts that always gets me is "And will you persist even after I bet you a billion dollars that I'll never love you, and will you persist even after I kiss you goodbye for the last time, will you keep on trying?" To me, that sounds like she wants a guy (perhaps a real one at that point) who won't leave her no matter what she does. My friend and I said it was like wanting the prince from Sleeping Beauty. The Princess is all "No, you don't really want to rescue me. You don't even know me because I was born over a hundred years before you!"

And the Prince is just "No, it's okay. I'm coming to save you."

So then the Princess goes "No, look, there're all these thorns and stuff."

And the prince just goes "No, it's okay. I'm going to cut through them."

So the Princess says (Disney version) "No, really, there's a dragon too."

But the Prince just says, "I'll kill the dragon. Don't worry about it."

Then the Princess says, "But there're all these stairs to climb to get to me."

And again the Prince is all "I don't care about the stairs."

Finally, the Princess goes, "But I've been sleeping for like a hundred years and I have all this drool on my pillow and I look gross."

And the Prince brushes off her concerns again and they live happily ever after.

It may be abusive, but I know I'd like a guy who'll want me no matter what, and who'll keep coming back after I turn him away. That ideal man who'll run after you down the street with roses going "No, you're the only one for me! My life isn't complete without you!"

At least, that's my interpretation. wink

Eh...
I think I was convinced for the first three times I heard it that it was an ode to Masturbation. but after seeing them live and reading the lyrics and watching the video, it became quite clear it was about lonliness.

@Fairgrass:

Yeah, I guess every girl kinda fantasizes about turning down a guy only to see him try even harder

It's the best kind of flattery
