I know that all Buddhists follow the 5 precepts though it might be worded differently, and Mahayans have more than 5. What are the other precepts that Mahayans believe in?

Yes, there are more precepts than the usual five. But I think these precepts (past the five) are observed by monastics (monks, nuns) and I think the Theravadin monks follow them as well. Some of these precepts are not to eat past noon, abstain from jewelry, perfume, etc (since they are things that please the ego), abstain from going out to entertainment (because its distracting for someone trying to cultivate spiritually. These are just but the few.

I know for a fact there's five for all lay followers, but some follow more on observance days - like the no perfume, not sitting in high chairs, eating only before noon and so on - but those are usually only one day a month.

Some followers of both Theravada and Mahayana will do eight rather than five - my husband nearly took the lifetime precepts at a Theravadan temple, which is the set of eight. 3nodding

I read about it a bit... it said it's best to do it on Full or new moons. So would you start once you saw the moon was full until the next night? Or can you just choose one day a month to do it?

Quote:
The Eight Mahayana Precepts: With an altruistic motivation,
one takes eight vows before dawn and promises to keep them
for twenty-four hours (no killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying,
intoxicants, eating after noon, wearing adornments, and sleeping
on a high bed with proud motivation). The first time one
takes precepts it’s important to receive them from a qualified
teacher, such as Geshe Tsulga. It is customary to make a small
offering to the preceptor after receiving these vows from him or
her.

I suppose these vows would be taken on the Buddhist holidays or days when pujas are taking place.

Tomorow is Lama Tsong Khapa day and at the Kurukulla center they will hold a puja for him.
