Right now at my church in the college class we are studying Revelation. I've never really studied it before so it's really interesting and I'm enjoying it since I love to study things like that. Last Sunday we read through the verse about 666 and the thing to remember is during Revelation there is a lot of symbolism and even some numberlogy. If you'd recall in Revelation the number seven is perfect and holy and has to do with Heaven and God. The person who was teaching the class last Sunday had a book on Revelation and was reading the person's view point (author) and according to the author they say that 666 isn't actually a physical number but it's a symbolic number and since it's 666 and not seven it stands for something that isn't holy and perfect and never can be (think of when you do math and you get repeating numbers that can never actually be rounded to the next number).
On another board I brought this up a poster commented that is what man (mortal) is. So what do you think?

well a single six is the number of man since we were created on the six day. I do believe that 666 is very literal. I dont believe it will be writen on you but maybe imbeded in your skin as a chip or something containing all your legal and financial information.

My pastor had the same view on 666.
He said it is imperfection. It is the devil trying to be perfect, but he is not. He said he believes since God's number is 7, the devil would be 6, because its close to 7 but it is not 7.

I have heard that 666 does refer to man and man is the beast's number. I don't think it's physical since remember that a lot of Revelation is symbolism and numberology and they both seem to go pretty well together within the book.

All it says that the beasts mark is 666 and remember that seven is perfect and holy and in some cases means Heaven so the 666 is like when you do a math problem and get a number contiuning on and can never actually get to the next number. Know what I mean? And so because a band says it then that means it's true? Nope. I didn't know they had that type of authority now.

smoking pot or taking some pills. Gradually, the addiction takes over, and they
need real help. "The devil will not attack us from the front, but is much more
devious than that." I think this is what John is saying by giving us that
symbol 666 as the mark of the beast.

symbol 666 as the mark of the beast. Right. People are so busy looking for this and that when in reality it's probably the opposite of what they're thinking and talking about.
