Welcome fellow Tuba players! Let me start by explaining what the Tuba Crew is, it was started in my highschool by myself (as a freshman) and other tuba playing band members. Over time, we became the best tuba section that the school ever had, we actually won two trophies just because of the tubas. We were the only section of the band that rode in the back of our section leader's truck...ah the memories... Anyway if you play the tuba/sousaphone and are active in some sort of band, feel free to post here.

And for those who do not play the tuba, yes it is somewhat heavy, and a sousaphone (mine at least) weighs 45 pounds...so give us a break!

Tubas sound cool, and they are really hard to play...but Contrary to popular beliefs, I don't think that they are essential to make a good band. 3nodding

A good stronge bass beat is essentail to a band. I don't play the tuba, but I do play a low brass instrament, just to let you know.

With out low brass the band sounds empty and light. I know, last year we didnt have any tubas and the band sounded so light like they would fly away. We really needed the part so I had to play bari sax. The bass usually has to keep the tempo too.

I don't play tuba.
But I really like tuba.
Plus I saw this thread and it made me think of something one of our tuba players said yesterday. She just started playing about 6 months ago, so yesterday she said "It's really hard for me to play tuba" and our BD said "yeah, it's a hard instrument to play" and she said "No, it's hard for ME to play tuba because it's sound makes me giggle". She's a funny girl.

Actually the flutes in our Marching Band get most of the good parts. And they rock too. Besides even though alot of people say it isnt true and it doesnt seem like it Flute and Tuba arent really that different. They both take the same amount of air (yea ALOT) and both are really hard to hold in position for a long while. Just the size and notes are the difference. You could actually say its like a Yin-Yang thing.

I play tuba and not only am I the 2nd best Tuba in the section, but I'm a girl. I wear my Sousa with pride and am glad to say I'm a White Whale(kinda odd, yes, but we have a fanfare called White Whales, so.....it makes sense). I'm the smallest tuba player out there, and I'm darn proud of it! I can change into my full uniform in just under a minuet, beret and all! Our section's actually got a name. We're the Blue Berets. Oh yeah.....^_^ The rest of our band really appreciates us cuz they can't keep tempo, cept for the percussionists. If it weren't for Tubas and the drums, they'd all die, and they've even said so! I take super-extra awesome care of my sousa. I spend 1 1/2 hours scrubbing it before some games. This included the bell and the body. Mine's the best looking one out there, but for now, it's not doing so well.....Some p***k ran into me once and I think they seriously messed it up.....My first valve casing is bent!!!!! crying That means I'll hafta march one of the nasty fiberglass sousas for the first game......Our school hates those fiberglass death-traps.....
My Band Stats: Name: Lil' Tessa Weight: 125lbs Height: 5'2 and a half" Mouthpeice size: 24 Special Abilities: I can fit my mouthpeice completely into my mouth. I can roll my step so good that when I march, my foot is almost vertical. I'm the director's favorite. I'm practically like his daughter! Sousa Name: Bartholemeu Weight: 65lbs Height: Almost as tall as me! Special Abilities: Knocking over the dance line. Perfect for uses in riot control. Keeping parking spots availible.

My band directer told the tuba section today about how like 16 years ago the sousie section had the most pride in their band and in themselves and now looking back i have noticed that that has changed big time...we just basically goof off now....and almost nobody has argued about Chasity's post with extreme passion.....COME ON GUYS! we are really an important factor in the band along with the other sections but Tuba's really do mean alot to a band....no tubas, no real band...and btw my sousie weighs 55 pounds...and after a few weeks it weighs little to nothing really (well it feels like that)
