My marching band has a general rule.
If you can get your entire section to do a visual effect, just slap it in, no need to ask.
If the directors like it, they'll keep it in.
Lately, I've been thinking about if that rule can leak into the music.
There's an alto sax solo in the second movement of this year's show.
It'll be my last chance to get some spotlight, as well as my section leader's. There's another rule against subsequent shows having the solo in the same section.
So what if I were to write out a harmonic line to match it? Turn it into a duet?
It would certainly be a bold move for the two of us to work on this privately and then bust it out without notice.
I think they'd be too dumbfounded to say no, if we managed to pull it off.
What do you guys think of the plan? The name of the show is "Red," and you can listen to it on keypoulan.com, if you want to hear what it sounds like.
Does your band have a rule like that on visuals?
Have you ever used it?
What about sneaking smaller things into the music, like little flourishes, or playing what another section plays instead?

We usually don't sneak in visuals, but a lot of us double another instrument's part without being asked, especially if it's one of the smaller sections. Our low woodwinds have gotten to where they improvise on almost half their part. The most that the other sections usually do is add in a rip or something.

We'd get chewed out pretty massively for adding visuals... Then again, our drill is crazy-go-nuts, and there are only a few breaks in the music. We never really stop moving, so there is no time for visuals.
Musical flourishes, definite no-no. Our music is teched down to a T. If we do anything wrong, or add anything, we get yelled at.

My school did Red a couple of years ago. It is such an AMAZING show!!

We have our drill and music written for us, so we have it a bit differently.
We don't change visuals. We have so much choreography already; what would we want to add? We'd much rather take away some of it so we're not so exhausted.
For the music, we can only do so in pep tunes...no one cares about that stuff. Besides, our music's so thick with 300 people that you wouldn't be able to hear it anyway if we decided to change the music. Sometimes the trumpets think they're cool enough to blast an octave higher, though...they just got yelled at yesterday.
So we don't do that stuff. C: We have cooler band directors who hand us the cool stuff. We get spoon-fed.

Our band is centered around going crazy razz
When we're doing stand still tunes we're required to dance around and go nuts. If we have breaks in our music, especially in drill tunes, we're supposed to yell and make noise.
Our directors couldn't care less if we decided to play another section's part, as long as we do it right. Like SnowPheonix said, you can't hear it with 300 people.

We clarinets always do something crazy-cool at least once for the show, but our BD never says anything about it, so we're not sure if he approves, disapproves, or just never sees it. xd But when we get everyone in the band to do it, he hits the roof. stare
But we have stolen the saxes' trill in the fight song (since they never play it stressed ) and everyone thought it was awesome.
