Phoenix Down doesn't bring people back from the dead, it just revives characters who are "knocked out."

Because it wouldn't make sense. If she could, and they sell the Phoenix Downs at every item store, then no one would die, ever. Someone could simply use a Phoenix Down on them, and they'd be good as new. And many parts of the story are dependant on others' deaths: Ifalna, Professor Gast, Sephiroth, President Shinra, Aerith, etc.

Pfft, if they could, the story wouldn't make any sense and it'd be a little more boring.

Dead: Body is not active. All living cells within the body aren't able to function anymore. Blood isn't able to pump anymore.

K.O.: Knocked-out. Unconscious. Able to wake up after a time.

Aerith had Masamune through her. There wasn't any blood flow out of the body because of the legend of Masamune and Murasme. (A.K.A: It doesn't make a mess with things....to put it simply) She wasn't knocked out. Not attacked to the point where physical exhaustion would kick in or whatnot.

Going over to Cloud who managed to survive being impaled by Masamune. It went through his stomach. With Aerith it went through her heart. So.....I don't think a Phoenix Down can repair an organ pretty vital in keeping the other organs alive if it's already been destroyed.....Ah.... sweatdrop

Actually, the sword went through Aerith's middle. It is very likely that it severed her spine and pierced a major internal organ or two. If by some miracle of the planet she survived, she would likely have been in a wheel chair.

Nope. Aeris will die in the course of the game. There are no cheats that work to keep her alive. If she lived, the entire planet would have to be destroyed. The only thing that will bring back Aeris is a gameshark, and I've heard you can only get her up to level 50 using that (although I don't see why you wouldn't be able to level her all the way up).
