One problem that may or may not plague many of the members of this forum is calcium carbonate (lime) buildup on their mouthpieces. Does anyone have any tips on lime removal without turning the mouthpiece green? Or any ideas about cleaning mouthpieces and/or ligatures?

I bet you thought this was about fruit eh? xd

sadly i did think this was about fruit. i'm sorry to say that i don't know how to deal with the lime thing; if anything gets on my mouthpiece i just use my reed to scrape it off. but maybe that's not the best way...

wow, that made me smile biggrin But I would really advise against using your reed for anything except playing. Which part do you scrape it with?

Try Hydrogen Peroxide and a toothbrush. You can buy a cheapo bottle of the stuff at a local drugstore. And it literally sizzles the crap off of it. Then you just scrape it off.

I've heard that it turns the mouthpiece green though...

Oh crap.... Well, my mouthpiece seems to be fine. I used dish soap and warm water, and it looks pretty much new, except for the teeth marks on the top sweatdrop

I just rinse out my mouthpiece with water everytime I practice.

That probably works well too lol

You could use a mild acidic solution and melt it off, but I'm not sure that your sax can handle it. But just stick to a Hydrogen Peroxide scrub down.

oh man! this thread just made me think of that Lime Coke commercial: "you put the lime in the Coke, you nut, and drink it all up..."
PostPosted: Mon Aug 21, 2006 1:21 am

you could probably scrub it with baking powder and then rinse too.
I strangely never encountered that problem?

my school uses this alcohol spray that cleans the mouthpiece and works pretty well. i´ve never needed to use it, though.
