Today, after Yizkor, my rabbi made a speech that was... well, controversial. Very controversial. Basically, he said that we as a congregation, a community, and a religious movement (Conservative) need to accept gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people.
Now personally, I don't have any problems with this: I've got good friends who are glbt. One of them is kinda using the other computer in my house right now xp But I was wondering what everyone else's opinion on this is? I know that halachically, homosexuality is banned. My dad was furious at the rabbi's comments; he's basically Orthodox but we don't live in walking distance of an Orthodox shul. Other people seemed less concerned. So let's hear it!
Do you think that a commited homosexual couple should be permitted to join a synagogue as a 'family', paying the rate of a married couple?
How far should Jews go with accepting homosexuality?
What would you say if your rabbi was going to officiate at a gay ceremony?

My basic view is that Homosexualls should be allowed into congregations, but rabbis shoudn't be homosexual.

I'm bi and Jewish, so when that issue about the religous leaders coming together to protest a gay pride event in Israel came up, I did some internet searching on Jewish views on homosexuality. As can be expected, typically the Orthodox community does not accept GBLT people, the Conservative comunity accepts them to a point, but does not condone homosexual marriage, and the Reform comunity allows homosexual marriage, but does not consider it equal to heterosexual marriage. I had a class with my Rabbi later that day (I go to a reform temple by the way) , so I brought it up for discussion. My Rabbi basically said that here in America, most Jews are liberal, and that they are pro-GBLT. He said that when he read about the issue in Israel, he wished that it was just a bad early April fools joke.
Being bi, I'm pretty biased, so I suppose you can guess my answers to your questions sweatdrop I do have a straight Jewish friend who I'm very sure would share my answers though.
Thank you for bringing up the topic Kiashana ^_^ I'm very interested to see what other people will post.

no offense to any gays lesbians etc...personally if it makes you happy do it, but don't pretend its ok halachically

I personally believe that we should be accepting completely of homosexuality and the like, but I'm a crazy liberal. I also totally support Rabbi Ayelet Cohen and what she's doing.

As far as that event goes, Lavyne, all Reform, most Conservative, and few Orthodox branches have condoned and even supported it. The sad thing is, though, if the Gaza pullout is delayed, it probably won't happen. xO

How is it that I haven't heard anything about this Israel Gay Pride event thing? Wow. I feel out of it. If anyone has a link to something about it, I would appreciate it
T-Dubs: Wait- how can we totally accept homosexuality within our congregations if those in leadership positions must be heterosexual? Isn't it possible that a supposedly straight rabbi is actually bisexual and just happened to end up with a woman? What reasoning is there behind a rabbi not being allowed to be homosexual?
ScionoftheBlade: But if we're already going to be breaking Halacha, why should our rabbis have to keep it? After all, by allowing a gay couple to be open within the congregation and not stoning them to death, the rabbi would be breaking Halacha as well.
AngelicElf- Well yes, there is that verse in Va'Yikra (Leviticus) that says no man-on-man sex. But the Torah also says that we should stone those who break any of the Shabbas commandmants. So should you stone me for being online on Shabbas, lighting the stove, turning on lights? How is not following that part of Torah any different?

Ok I may be shunned or kicked out of the guild for this, but are we forgetting what it says in the Torah about homosexuality?
כב וְאֶת-זָכָר--לֹא תִשְׁכַּב, מִשְׁכְּבֵי אִשָּׁה: תּוֹעֵבָה, הִוא. Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination. Leviticus 18:22

What's the reasoning behind that? It seems like you're just saying that to say, "Uhh.. well... we can't entire condone it... how about no rabbis?" If you haven't heard of Rabbi Steven Greenberg, I highly suggest you look him up. He's an amazing, Orthodox, gay rabbi. heart
