Being that this sermon is late ..... gomen, everyone! I'm going to do this on: "Time .... how well do we use it?"
And this is majorly for me too!!! (as evidenced by the latest of this 'Wednesday' sermon!!
Ephesians 5:15-17 (King James Version)
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
AND:
Ephesians 5:15-17 (Amplified Bible)
15 Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),
16 Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil.
17 Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.
Here is the meaning of the word Redeem:
To fulfill (a pledge, for example).
To set free; rescue or ransom.
To save from a state of sinfulness and its consequences. To make up for: The low price of the clothes dryer redeems its lack of special features.
To restore the honor, worth, or reputation of: You botched the last job but can redeem yourself on this one.
So, Jesus is telling us to redeem the time .... fulfilling it, freeing it, rescueing it, ransoming it, saving it, making up for it, and restoring the honor, worth, or reputation of it.
Because the days are evil.
What does this mean to you?
To me it means that because of the evil of our day, time is very precious, and shouldn't be wasted. (Boy, am I preaching to myself here!) The time we have every day can be spent on helping others and lifting them up .... something that all of us here at our church are trying to do .... OR .... that same time can be spent doing absolutely nothing, or spent in worthless pursuits.
This phrase: "Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people)" really speaks to me of the need to try to glorify God in all that we do:
Having a purpose every day
Being worthy of His love and sacrifice for us
Being accurate in how we portray ourselves to be His followers.
Being wise and sensible and intelligent in Him
Not being in today's terminology: stupid and ignorant.
I was unwise with my time the last few days, otherwise I would have realized that it was time to work on this. I am sorry for that and for all the other time I've wasted in my life.
How do these words of our God strike you? Let's get some dialogue going on this and please share with all of us, what these words meant to you.
Thank you for your love and understanding!
Father, enable us to use our time wisely. I know that doesn't mean that we're to be under bondage, thinking we have to be in the bible or in prayer every moment of the day, I know it means that we should be accomplishing something for the kingdom within the balance of all we have to do each day - please help us to indeed redeem the time you've given us!! And thank you for our life and each day that is such a blessing to every one of us. We love you Lord! In Jesus' Name, Amen.
