While I was watching the first of the new series the other day a thought stuck me. The Doctor is lonely, no? He has a time machine, no? So why not zoom back to his planet before he was born. Wouldn't that solve the time paradox problem of being in the same place as another you?

Well, that has been theorized and talked about. The most common reason I've heard as to why that can't be done is the speculation that Gallifrey was outside of time. Therefore, he can't get back. Or the other reason that whatever killed all of them actually whiped them completely out of time, ever. But a TARDIS can keep a person who's in it who should not exist, existing.
