Yesterday (Tuesday) I decided to try to draw Adam Pascal (Roger from Rent) in art class Here's the original picture: And here's the latest version (hopefully finished): [ V1.0] [ V2.0] So... C&C? And yeah, I know the ear and the left side of the mouth look off, but that's just my scanner being stupid : P

Looks like a good start. Have you ever considered filling in certain tonal layers first? like, all the light grays, progressively darker? It sometimes makes finishing compositions difficult if you only work with one specific area. It does focus your attention, but the rest of the piece starts to suffer because of it.
personally, I would try roughly or lightly mapping in the rest of the composition, and then working with tones a bit more.
Other than that though, and th at's just a technical suggestion at best, it's looking good. The eyes seem unfinshed, but the nose and lips are quite well done.

This is turning out very cool. : D
Since it's still all WIP, I'll stick to commenting on shapes etc.
First off, I love his nose. Especially the tip. It looks, well, exceedingly nose like. And, breaking my own rules here, the shadows are very well done. xd
The only thing thats popping out at me to fiddle with is the light-side of his face. The cheek looks a little steep.? Just that top bit, about the length of the bridge of his nose.
This is so nifty. heart
I love WIP's. ^^

I don't want you to make the same mistake I made, so I'm going to tell you a little something about portrait drawing. When using a reference, you MUST start by drawing an oval for the head, all the lines to place the features on and everything. Do all the rough work first, don't just dive into the picture. Map everything out before you start on details. Example > http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/Tawneh/Charcoal.jpgI drew that last year, took about a week of hard work. You can tell that some of the features look warped because I didn't start off with the rough work. I just started drawing the eyes and adding other facial stuff. It could've been a lot better if I started off with the basics. With that out the way... His eyes look a bit too far apart, and Spinelle's drawover accurately points out how the chin and mouth can be improved. That's all I can really comment on at this point, so good luck with the rest of it. 3nodding

I did start with an oval and guidelines and such... I had just kidna erased them once I started with the shading
They were there, though, and that's how I started, with an oval :3
I moved the chin and mouth around quite a bit, and messed with the eyes... maybe it's better now?
And I fixed the cheek :3
I know it still isn't perfect, but I'm happy with it and I'm sick of working on it...
So this version I just put up will probably be the final version
I love Adam Pascal, but not so much that I'll spend any more time on that picture
I think if I do any more to it, I'll get sick of looking at his beautiful face
