Hey all,

I'm going to be planting my herb garden soon, and I was wondering if there were any really common 'must haves' that I should plant. I know that

Lavender
Rosemary
Sage
Basil
Rose
Mint
Patchouli

are all really common, and I'll be planting those, but what others do you recommend? I have some in mind, but they may be difficult/impossible to get/grow in NZ...

If you have a pet cat, have a feline familiar or work with any cat related deities or spells I suggest you plant catnip. I myself want to grow catnip so I can spoil my cat...as soon as I get one...I want a kitty!

I don't know too much about garden's and gardening unfortunately, nor do often work with any of the afforementioned because of what I can't access to easily. I wish I could help!

Lemon Balm is nice, but watch out it goes crazy, just like any kind of mint. Dill is good and it keeps some pests away. There are many kinds of lavender, so pick the one you like the most. Two different ones might be nice. One higher then the other. Also include purple cornflowers (they have a different name, but I can't spell it.). They aren't really a herb but the are a good healing flower. I have so many, but I don't have time right now. I will get back to you I promise.

@Jen: gonk

@Kokuro: Yea, I've got Catnip on my list. xd I've got two gorgeous creatures- Nutmeg and Mittens. Mittens is such a showcat, and nutmeg is just adorable. heart I'm a little new to gardening as well, so I hope I don't screw this up! xd

@Tazzy: I haven't heard of Lemon balm o_O I really wanted to grow some Jasmine, but apparently it's illegal to plant it here, because it overgrows so much. As it is, I'm gunna have to make some wooden dividers for the mint to stop it taking over. xd
Dill was on my last list of herbs, I think- It'll probably be easier to get hold of than some of the others I have my eye on, too. As for lavender, I do have a potted one that I was given for my birthday, which I think I'll transplant into the garden...
I'll have to look out for purple cornflowers- I'd like to plant some flowers with properties, as well as herbs, just to lighten it up. 3nodding I can't wait till you've got time. mrgreen

A neat way to keep plants from over growing everwhere, is to use things like those orange sewer pipes or large, long cement blocks. Dig a hole the size of one of these and kind of deep, you can leave some of the pipe or block above the ground, adds interest and height, different levels. Once this is done put dirt inside and then plant your plant. Works great for all over growing plants. Check with you locale county farm department to find out which plants you can plant in your area. I'm sure that any government agricultural department can help you with all kinds of questions about what to plant.

With cats living around your garden, be careful with the types of mints (including catnip or catmint) you plant. Some can be very harmful to cats; it's why I don't have any growing in my garden, though I'd like to grow at least two kinds of mint. Basil is a good herb, also consider Bay Laurel (it's a tree) to grow. Lovage is a good herb (can also be used in the kitchen like lettuce), as is parsley. A lot of the culinary herbs can also be used in magical workings. If you're interested in mail ordering your herbs, I would suggest Nichol's Garden Nursery (it's in Oregon, USA). They sell seeds and plants, and DO have a website. There are several varieties of herbs, all of which can be used in both culinary works and magical works.

Hope this helps.

@Bayleigh: You still exist! Yay! n_n
@Tazzy: I love that Idea! And as for council regulations, I'll just ask the local Plant Barn. ^_^
@Jen: Is it Vervain you're thinking of?
@Healerweaver: Would Catnip be hrmful to them then? Or only in certain circumstances? I can't remember if I was going to plant Basil, but I'll keep it in mind. As for a Bay Tree- I read about them in The Magical Household (Cunningham)- I'd really love to plant one. I already know the perfect spot- it's right next to my plant box that I intend to plant the herbs in. It'd be great to mail order them, but I live in New Zealand- they probably don't hip quite that far. xd I'll just head down to King's Plant Barn to get them, I think, although I do know of a Pagan Plant Nursery which is about a half hour drive away...

Thank you, everybody!

Yay! You mean you're gonna go and plant... now?

It could be Vervain. I know I have a satchet of it somewhere, from Aradia. (No, not the Goddess. xd It was this awesome Wiccan shop down here, much much better than Earth Song.. But.. it was a while ago, and went out of buisness. -_-) Anyway, yeah, I'll look.

Edit: Vandal root, or Valeria. (I think. It's Mum's handwriting.)

Love harmony, sleep, purification, protection. Good used in bindings. Supplement in graveyard dust. Introduce to couples who are quarreling. Cats love it.

That depends on the herb. Most herbs in my opinion, smell just as nice as flowers.

For the catnip-- it will attract *all* cats in your neighborhood. It's basically the 'crack/grass' of the species. A friend found the best way to be able to grow catnip and have cats at the same time is to completely cage the plant (top, bottom, and sides). The cats will eat what grows out of the cage, but you will still have the actual plant and what stays in the cage for your own use. He used chicken wire and thoroughly stacked it down so the cats couldn't knock the cage over.
With cats, also remember that ivys of any sort are poisonous to them. ~sigh, I love ivy.~

The Pagan Plant Nursery... does it have a website? I don't care about how long it would take to ship from New Zealand, if they have what I'm looking for.
