Nokoa trotted blissfully through the tall, savannah grass, swaying his stumpy tail from side to side. His small head barely broke the surface of the grass as he pranced along, yipping happily; unaware of the dangers of the savannah.

Chachili was sleeping in the same long grass, sound as she could be.
"Mmmph," she smiled, eyes flickering open as a beam of sunlight hit her, "What time is it?"
She had been sleeping often. She hadn't been feeling as well as she should have been, and was losing a bit of sleep during the nights. She felt so hungry... as if she were eating for three, instead of one. And her stomach! By god, it was huuuuuge! Chachili had never thought she could've eaten that much... every now and again, too, she felt pounding from inside her belly.
A kick.
Chachili smiled, tired, but happy. There was new life inside her. It felt beautiful, so beautiful.
She had a duty now, as a mother, to allow no predator to get close to her.

Nokoa trotted through the grass, swinging his small body up and down as he leaped from patch to patch.
Suddenly, he felt a hard, warm surface across his face, crushing into his nose. Jumping back, with wide, golden eyes, he peered towards the thing. It was a grey blob. Nokoa tilted his head in confusion and shook the idea away. It was just his imagination. His imagination, playing tricks.
The young Maned Wolf pup crossed his eyes playfully and jumped forward, only to smack back into the same rough surface.
"Hey!", he growled, thumping back into it. "What gives? --"

The 'grey blob' instantly twisted around, bounding to her feet. She turned, irritated, facing the animal who had just bumped into her.
"What do you want?" she growled, eyes flashing, "Stay away from me! I'll kill you, if you get too close, canine!"
Truth be told, Chachili wasn't sure what to do. She was just startled, that was all, and often behaved this way when a predator bumped into her.
What surprised Chachili was that Nokoa had nudged her not once, but twice. Did he want to fight?
Chachili knew that she couldn't get hurt or attacked. Lives were depending on her.

Nokoa yelped, jumping back. The grey blob was talking to him!
He peered upwards, trying to make out the figure of the creature, but was unable to. The tall grass grew over his head, and all the young pup could see was grass and grey.
"Where'd the sky go?", he yelped, his orange eyes growing wide with fear and confusion.
"Eat me? Why? Whadda' I do?", Nokoa gasped, whirling around in circles; trying to identify the source of threat.

Chachili tilted her head. This kid was daft with a capital 'D'.
"Uh, well..." she explained, legs wobbling as she tried to hold the weight of her stomach, "You tried to attack me, didn't you? Or talk to me? Well, you touched me. That's all I really know."
She leaned forward, one eyebrow raised in a confused manner.
"Ah... are you alright? I mean... you seem to be a little," she paused, trying to think of something not so harsh, "... stupid."
That was harsh, but Chachili was too ignorant to see it.

"I did'na try to attack you!", Nokoa defended, peering up at the grey blob questioningly.
He finally believed he understood. The grey was the sky. A goddess was up there, speaking to him. It sounded angry. Uh oh.
"Don't rain on me!", he whimpered, cowering at Chachili's hooves. He stepped forward, trying to run, but smacked hard onto her ankle.
"Owwy", the pup exclaimed, falling over and rubbing his nose carefully. The sky was mean.
Stupid? Hah. He'd heard that before. Who was that .. his mom? His mother had always tried to explain it to him; that he was different from the other pups. She had given up, though, and he found himself here.
"Mama?", he asked, looking curiously up at the staggering grey legs.

A goddess?...
Chachili would have agreed with Nokoa, if she had known what he was thinking. Chachili thought of herself as the centre of the world, of course, and so she would've been pleased to be reffered to as some kind of divine being. However, Nokoa had not spoken of any 'goddess', and had only uttered the strange, rather 'random' phrase:
"Don't rain on me!"
What?!
Chachili looked at him again, a little confused. Did this... animal think she was going to cry or something? What was going through this thing's head? Chachili didn't understand, and remained quiet until Nokoa called her by one name...
"Mama, eh?" Chachili looked away, "Get it right, you. There's no way I'm your mother. We're different, can't you see? I'm a prey animal. You're a predator. Don't act so daft... that act of yours is getting tiresome."
Was this pup teasing her? Did he know about her belly, swelling to a large size, and did she know that she was to be... a ... a...
'He doesn't,' Chachili thought, shaking her head, 'He's just weird.'
Wondering what exactly she should call him, Chachili offered her name.
"I'm Chachili," she said, and then asked one simple question, hoping that the creature would at least know what he was called, "And you are...?"

"But, mommy!", Nokoa whimpered, pressing his face against her ankle. None of Chachili's words had phased him. He often heard the same remarks from his own mother. What was different about Chachili, other than that she seemed to be some sort of sky?
"When did you become a goddess, mama?", asked Nokoa, nipping playfully at Chachili's hoof. "Are you going to storm? You are so grey!", he exclaimed.
Act? Was is an act? Prey? Does she mean ... "Are you the goddess of prey, too? Can you feed me? I'm hungry."
"Umn. I 'unno. What was my name again?", Nokoa thought aloud, jumping to his hind paws to peer up at her.
With a gasp, the pup fell over. "You aren't me mama!", he screeched, wriggling away from her. It was huge! "Monster!", he shrieked, trying to find the balance to get up.

Hmmm... this creature was not going to give her his name. Chachili's lips tightened, and she scowled. She hated not knowing the name of another... it was one of her strange habbits that she was born with. She needed to know another's name, to be comfortable with them. But this one...
She leaned in.
"A goddess? A goddess of prey? Tell me, child, have you gone completely mad or something? In fact, are you actually sane at all?" Chachili would have walked away, then and now, but found herself feeling increasingly tired. Oh, her stomach. How it weighed her down.
"I'm not your mother," she growled, "And I'm not a monster! Far from it, really. Tell me, have you lost your mother?"
Her voice was kinder now.

"Mama says I'm not sane all the time. So.. umn.. I think so, then", he muttered, curiously looking up at Chachili's foreign face.
"I've never seen a monster before", he said under his breath, gaping in awe at the large creature.
"I guess you're not my mama", he concluded with a lighthearted nod. "Lost her? I .. n'umm .. I don't know. She was here, and then she left-", he said, trailing off as he spun around, peering out towards the red-bathed horizon in search of his mother's silhouette against the setting sun.
"She should be calling me in for yummy time", Nokoa said, wondering aloud. He was loosing his focus on Chachili, the 'monster'. "'Nokoa! Nokoa! Can you hear?", he asked, looking sadly up at Chachili. "Is she calling Nokoa?"

Chachili's eyes softened. This 'dog-thing' seemed lucky, in a way... he was so carefree and seemed to be lost in a different kind of world. He did not seem to live in the same, cruel, logical world that Chachili herself lived inside.
"Crying for 'Nokoa', eh?" she lifted her head, looking about savannah, "Maybe the 'monster' can help you find your mama, then."
She stepped forward, eyes locking into his, staring scornfully at him for a minute.
"But don't call me monster," she said, firmly, "I'm 'Chachili', okay?"

Nokoa nodded sadly. He got to his paws and padded towards Chachili, pressing his head against her ankle once more.
"Okay, Chachili", he said, whimpering.
He looked up at the large creature. It certainly had eyes, like him. And a nose, and ears. Maybe it wasn't a monster after all. Not a goddess, either.. nor was it the sky.
"What are you?", he asked quietly, tilting his head. "And why is your tummy so big?", Nokoa asked, narrowing his golden eyes into slits as they peered over her large stomach.

Chachili grinned.
"No need to get all quiet like that, you... 'Nokoa' thing," she grunted, nipping at his ears, "Suddenly, you're all hyper and crazy... and then you're all down like this..."
She couldn't believe this... animal. Chachili had met plenty of wild dogs before, but this one was extraordinary. And odd. Very odd. It looked different from the wild dogs she met before, too. It was canine, all right, but she'd never come across something like him before.
"What am I? I'm a Klipspringer, that's what I am," she grinned, but her grin soon faded as soon as the next question came, "I'm fat, because I'm having fawns soon. Babies," she explained, "His babies..."
She quietened down.
"I'm not even sure I want them..."
Instantly, she regretted saying that. It sounded like something her father would say. But Chachili didn't want family. She was scared of family.
She looked away from Nokoa, ashamed.

Nokoa ignored her question. He was tired of hearing what was wrong with him.
"Babies?", he repeated, his expression blank. "How'd they get in there? Did you eat them?", he questioned with wide eyes, backing away. Maybe Chachili was a monster!
