The surroundings of the quiet forest soon blurred into a swirl of city streets and open meadows as the two creatures sped towards the fading light of the spirit they both felt drawn towards. Akina on foot and Hoshi by car, they had already reached Bass'ken Lake, feeling their stomachs drop at the emptiness of the first two possible locations.
But Akina remained the optimist, never letting her feet miss a beat as she sprang from branch to branch, elvish grace and speed never failing her. The third spot lay several feet in the distance, and Akina raised her eyes to the moon, noting its near perfect position in the night sky.
Already she could feel a strange aura... there were no birds in this area. She halted her pace immediately, taking a few steps towards the trees that circled the clearing that she had told Hoshi was an excellent nexus of spiritual energy. Her heart dropped.
Her keen elf eyes could make out a very familiar form, large grey-white wings folded neatly behind her pale skinned body. "Shina..." she whispered quietly. But the Fa'e was not alone. Scattered across the clearing were the bodies of numerous creatures, the nearest to Shina an elf who looked very similar to Akina herself.
Glancing over her shoulder, she could just barely see the headlights of Hoshi's car. Curious though, she pressed forward, stepping so close that she could reach out and touch Shina. The girl was in a white spirit robe, probably preparing to strip down for a dance under the moonlight. Her stomach was slightly rounded from her pregnancy, but it appeared as though the child's development had slowed with whatever spell was upon its mother.
And what spell was this? The air was supercharged and tight... Eirnae lay as if she had fallen in a protective stance, arms wide spread in front of her daughter to that the two had hit the ground in a spooning position. They lay as if dead, eyes open, faces frozen in surprise. Towards the edge of the clearing, there was a dark panther of sorts, back hair still arched in a defensive stance. What had attacked these people?
Fearing Hoshi's reaction, the elf made her first steps to relax the faces of each of the creatures, starting with the smaller beasts, running her fingers over eyelids, stressed forwards, rumpled fur. As she progressed, her feet came to rest beside the elf. Crouching down, a cold chill raced down her spine; they looked so similar. Of course, the faces were different, but the structures were essentially the same. Her fingertips trembled as she pulled lids over emerald eyes, straightening all that she could. And then she approached Shina.
Even in this horrid state, the Fa'e still appeared so benevolent. Dropping to her knees, Akina drew in her breath. The elf was not a stranger to dead bodies, but these bodies... they were caught between life and death. And something so chilling had gripped them that Akina could not even see their spirit energy.
Her eyes threatened to spill tears as she reached a shaky hand to touch the youth. How would Hoshi react to seeing her like this when it was already tearing at Akina's empathic soul? The flash of headlights on the horizon. Akina had to act quickly.
Her lean fingers trembled as they approached crystal blue eyes, cloudy from six months of unnatural slumber. As her skin brushed against foreign skin, electricity crackled in the air and struck, sending Akina flying backwards to the center of the clearing. Her mind burned with images of Shina's life, past and present.
Flashes of the sacrifice, blood, death, the Void, rebirth, blindness, reuniting, friends, love, sex, joy, and at last, a fire flash the blurred out the sky. And then darkness. While her mind slipped under, her body erupted, mimic wounds cutting themselves into her flesh across her ankles, wrists, chest, back. Her soul felt split in two, forcibly ripped from her. As her eyes closed, the wounds did as well, leaving only puddles of blood and lukewarm scars.
And across the clearing, a dormant soul stirred, enriched by casting off pain and taking in fresh strength. Great wings twitched, willing heavy body to move.
Shina had returned.

Hoshi's heart was beating so loudly in his chest that he thought he might vomit, but instead, the hope held it back. Two of the places were empty, and Hoshi could feel himself dropping more and more into dispair. He really couldn't take all of this hope that he held onto with longing, but then he couldnot drop it, either, until they had searched every last palce on this earth for Shina.
Even to Hoshi, who had no gift in that of auras or spirits, besides that of Shina, could feel that this clearing was different from the others. Closer and closer Hoshi drew the car, his heart pounding. The Starkeeper could make out the slender form of Akina through the trees, and so he stoped the car, openning the door cautiously.
All at once, Shina's lonely spirit hit him, as it hadn't done in months. Hoshi could feel the whole in his heart become filled, and he seemed to nearly faint himself, but he held onto the life, though it wasn't full yet. The Fa'e began to sprint towards the clearing, but after only a few steps, he felt himself thrown back by an electric force, and Hoshi stumbled to his knees.
"Shina!" he called with a gasp, feeling at last, her spirit's aura flooding with light, the way that his own had not been able to do until he had found his beloved. "Shina!"
Hoshi's mind caught the traces of the memories that had been given to Akina, and he stopped short, his heart and his stomach unsure that they could go on. Cautious eyes glanced around, until he could see the obviously distrubed form of Akina, a trickle of blood from underneath her.
The fa'e remained torn: To run to Shina's body, in the center, or to care for the person that had led him all of this way. "Shina," Hoshi whispered, though only a longing glance was thrown at the mound, and instead, he ran to Akina's limp body.

The wind whistled slowly through the trees, ruffling the leaves on the branches and stirring false life in the clearing. Shina did not yet open her eyes, not quite out of the darkness... but she heard a voice, a beautiful, loving voice that filled her ears with honey.
My Starkeeper... It was the first thought that had passed through her mind in over six months. Her love, her Hoshi, the one she had always cared for in this life and in her last. But why couldn't see feel his soothing touch on her brow? Why was his light away from her? And why couldn't she feel her legs?
Still, the spirit creature did not excite; her mind was still weighed down by such a long comatose state. And as hard as she might try, she would not be able to lift her arms or legs due to muscle atrophy. But that was something she could work through in time. Tiny hairs on her arms produced another sensation-- she could feel the wind.
Across the clearing, Akina lay unconscious, clothes drawing in the dark red liquid. Hoshi might recognize the familiar scars that now covered her, though some were masked by her night armor. The young elf was cold, but most definitely alive. Her eyes swirled beneath her eyelids, mind reeling through Shina's experiences, flesh too weak to maintain them.
The great grey wings of the waking Fa'e curled back in now, having managed to remain usable even after such a long period of inactivity. She was strong, and yet, in this weakened state, her power had its limits.
Eyes still closed, twin lips parted, dry and cracked as they were. Air was scarce, but still she persisted, issuing forth a harsh push of air, a wheezing sound lacking melody. Hoshi... she called out in her mind, but upon trying to vocalize, her mouth merely opened and shut like a fish straining for breath, making no discernable sound. A trail of drool trickled out of the corner of her mouth, her tongue feeling swollen and foreign.
Still unable to open her eyes, she began calling out with her mind, willing him to come to her. And what of her mother? Mother... Starkeeper... somebody... help... anybody... please... As usual, her mind returned first, able to create words where her vocal chords and mouth could not.
Like a child, she lay there, waiting for someone to let her know what was real and what was fake. Was she truly out of the darkness?

Hoshi had just begun going over the fallen Akina, in search of any scars or injuries, when Shina's own mind called out to him. His fumbling fingers dropped the wrist he had been exaiming as his eyes grew as wide as stars it seemed.
'My beloved!' he nearly shouted, but instead only thought in the solumn clearing, having to first shake his head, to assure himself that it was not a mirage. "Shina, my love," Hoshi gasped, unable to suck in the gulp of air as he found his body hurled into the air and sprinting to Shina's body.
"Shina, Shina, Shina," Hoshi mustered, his voice choking his dry throat as tears streamed down his face. The Starkeeper knealt beside his fallen lover, stroking her soft cheek as he wiped away the sliver of silva. "Shina, Shina," he called again, trying to keep her spirit from slipping, keeping her here with him.
'Darling, hang on,' his spirit cooed as Hoshi whispered kiss upon kiss onto Shina's open mouth and face. 'I'm here, beloved, hang on, just for me. For the child in you. Don't go,' Hoshi pleeded, all too unsure that this was not a dream, not just a fragment of imagination. 'Baby,' he called, stroking mother's belly, still in an attempt to draw Shina's spirit back into the proper realm.

Tears began to stream over high pale cheekbones, gushing forth under the closed eyelids. Open, open, open... she willed herself to move, trying so desperately to stir his limbs. She could feel the warmth touch of Hoshi's familiar hands upon her, his gentle kisses. If only she could kiss him back!
But it was his mention of a child that brought Shina's mind to a screaming halt. Baby? It was at that moment that Shina began to feel the burning spirit of another life force within her. It churned in her womb, giving her strength, letting her rise from its need to be born.
Her eyes flashed open, crystal pools unable to adjust to the light, giving her hysterical blindness. Her body tensed against the familiar feeling, though she had not sensed it since her early childhood. Blind? How cruel to prevent her from seeing her beloved's face!
Still, it was a step forward, open eyes and open mind and open heart. Again, her mouth puckered, trying to speak words. And this time, a small whisper came out. "Hoos...." She never finished it, but it was a step in the right direction as her body began to rouse.

That had been the reaction that Hoshi had been hoping for. He was no longer thinking on his actions, merely reacting by instinct to slivers of hope that Shina gave, as he settled into the ground beside Shina, lying a prone position to be next to her.
"That's right, love, Hoshi's here," The Starkeeper cooed, stroking her baby soft cheeks and wispy hair, whispering sweet, soft words of love to his beloved. "You can do it, love, come back. I'm right here," he offered, his words of encouragement tickling her ears as he continued to attempt to return the circulation with only his lips.
'C'mon, love,' Hoshi's spirit beckoned, trying to give Shina some of his strength to mix with Akina's, to make her strong once more. 'The baby needs you to be strong.'
The tears were still streaming down Hoshi's hceeks, though he had stopped crying, for he had decided to focus his energy on reviving Shina from her slumber. "Can you wiggle your fingers and toes, Shina?" he asked, the only thing that he could remember that doctors asked coma patients.

Silver-grey hair stained the ground in thick locks, having actually grown into the soil after not moving for so long, making itself impossible to remove from the roots and grass. (This was something she had yet to realize since she had not yet been able to move her head.) Her very clothing had begun to whither away in the moist ground. She longed to move, but lacked the physical strength to do so.
But her spirit was strong; it had always been her pillar.
Eyes open now, she strained against the eerie darkness, willing herself to move, a toe, a finger, anything. Her legs seemed unresponsive, so her attention turned to her finger. Soft grunting noises puffed out of her nostrils and tight pink lips.
Every inch of her went tense, whole energies focused on a single movement. And then, with great anguish, she wiggled her left index finger. Once that one had been conquered, soon her entire hand was capable of movement. And those curious, cold fingers reached for the one hand that she had been craving: Hoshi's.
Sliding her hand over his, she issued forth her first coherent statement, with dragging words. "Thank you... love," her voice choked out, still raspy and full of holes. Shina was convinced that his love had saved her from her terrible state, and again, it was his love that brought her fingers and soul to life. He called her out of the darkness and into his bright, starry world.
Tears continued to softly stream down her smooth cheeks, wanting so badly to understand what had happened. But that was not where her mind was at yet. The poor child did not even realize that her unconscious mother lay only inches from her, still locked out of Gaia and life.
Praise the Heavens that her eyesight had not yet returned for the sight of them all, her family, would have surely sent her reeling back into the comatose state.
Across the meadow, Akina, feeling roused by Hoshi's efforts and also by Shina's soul magic (though the latter was unknown to both parties), opened her eyes once more, feeling lightheaded and hot from the pain. Slowly, she sat up, eyes wide at the blood on the ground, visibly shaken by the scenes of Shina's life that had drowned her mind only moments before.
Such power and grace and love... Shina was truly angelic; Akina had just never known how very close to the truth that was. Sitting upright, she felt like an alien, an interloper, watching Hoshi and Shina. She had no right to know everything about Shina's life as she know did. How could she talk to the child now without scaring her away? And did Shina even know that the memories had been thrown upon the young elf?
Unsure of what to do, Akina remained in her position, purposefully hiding her consciousness so that Hoshi and Shina may enjoy their moment together.

The tears started anew as Hoshi laid his body beside Shina's prone position and laid his head gently beside hers. It had been so long since he had been able to feel her body next to his, and even now, it gave him strength to hold on, though it was still cold to his touch, the unnatural coma still having its affect on it.
"You are so brave, my darling," Hoshi whispered into Shina's soft ear, holding on tight to the hand that Shina seemed to be able to move, a sign of his physical as well as emotional support.
In some way he could sense that this was something that Shina had to do herself, that he could not do for her, but all the same, Hoshi reached out with his other hand, the one that was not still clinging tightly to the hand, and began to gently massage the luke-warm arm, in an attempt to help Shina regain the circulation.
"I love you so much, my Shina. I'm here," he whispered once more, his gentle hand finding it's way to Shina's face, which he cupped in his palm. He had not wanted to ruin his hope, but Hoshi could see now that Shina's eyes were unseeing, merely open because that was what the muscles had been told to do. He pressed a finger against the top of ech cheekbone, and trailed them gently down her face, his heart a mass of black, wriggling snakes.
"Can you see me?" Hoshi finally worked up the courage enough to ask, trying to divert his eyes from the fragile sight as he worked his hand down Shina's other arm, pressing the loose muscles with rough fingers.

Time passed by slowly as Shina strained to regain her own body. She could now fully move both hands so her fingers twitched continuously whenever she tried to sit up or move her legs. It was excruciating, but Shina could handle it. After all, she had been strong enough to sacrifice herself so many years ago and drift endlessly in the Void. Surely this was a small feat.
Gathering all of her breath, the youthful Fa'e prepared to make one last attempt to pull herself from the grasp of her coma. Everything burned hot as muscle clenched, teeth as well. Sweat formed on her brow, and her mind wondered remotely if this was what childbirth would be like. And then something broke loose.
Shina could feel her arms lift up into the air, floating as if no weight bore down upon them. Feeling success, she strained harder and harder until she felt a great pop within her mind... and then everything was bright.
At first this seemed to be a miracle, but soon the Fa'e realized that something was horribly wrong. Despite her physical blindness, her aura sight had returned, and she noted that Hoshi's spirit was no longer beside her, but below her. Fearing what had happened, Shina began to flap her wings wildly, nearly diving back into her body.
With a gasp, her form wrenched forward, and the broken angel could feel again. Her wings spread wide, chest pushed forward, legs rolling to the side, but her head could not straighten itself out; it had grown right into the ground. She made a soft noise as she was tugged backwards toward her head. Reaching up a hand to grasp her head, she finally replied, "I can always sense your heart, whether or not I can see."
A soft smile crossed her lips, tears replaced by warmth and love. "I'm afraid that I am slightly stuck. It is all that is keeping me from diving in to your arms, I assure you, love." Her hands slid away to reveal the spot that her long gray waves entered the soil.

Hoshi inhaled a deep breath of air as Shina's tension released in her body and she rolled loose, her spirit obviously gone. "Shina?" he choked out, in a half-whisper, before he could feel her body fill again, as a pillowcase that had lost it's pillow, and he clutched ever tighter to her hand.
"I was wondering what was keeping you," Hoshi joked, trying his hardest to release the pressure that had gathered as Shina had left her body and then reentered it. "But I didn't feel it was my place to ask," he whispered, squeezing her hand tight as he realized the predicament she seemed to be in.
"Love, I'm not sure I could could your lovely hair, but it seems to be the only thing seperating us," The Starkeeper fumbled in his small belt packet for the pocket knife that Ardre had given him for his birthday, having to had used it very rarely so far, but this would be the most important taskt that he could perform with it. "Just a moment," he whispered, afraid in a sense that if he didn't go now, he might never work up the courage to sever Shina's gorgeous hair.
Hoshi cupped Shina's head with one large hand, lifting it up slightly from the ground and pulling the hairs so that they were not loose, for the knife would cut better if they were pulled tight. "Here we go," he whispered, his comforting hand still holding her head up as he sawed away at the hair. Less than half of the length had to be cut, and when Hoshi was done, it hung about to Shina's shoulder blades, and Hoshi was left holding one end of a thick bundle of hair in one hand, and Shina's suddenly loose head in another.
So as not to startle Shina, Hoshi left his hand still against her head, and let the hair drop to the ground as he gathered Shina up gathering her slender body into her larger one and holding on for what seemed to be dear life, showering loose kisses all over her face and neck.

The bright blue eyes of the young spirit Fa'e remained wide open, pupils crawling around in eye sockets, desperate to catch a glimpse of anything. With her secondary vision back, Shina was able to see the glorious energy that Hoshi gave off in sparkling waves, how it wrapped around her frail form. She could feel her physical strength in the warm numbess about her wrists and sides, but it was his presence that kept her mind alert.
A maternal hand flew to her stomach, gently settling upon the round moon shape of her own body; she knew the baby was fine, but relexes could not be prevented. Her body heaved a whispered groan as she felt her head supported by the strong hand of her beloved.
The murmurs of his voice poked at her mind, and Shina nodded slowly, though not really clear of what he had asked of her. It was when she felt the first strands break away that she understood. Slowly and methodically, Hoshi severed the trapped gray locks, letting them tumble to the ground, moonlight flashing off of them.
As the last strand was cut, a great weight fell from the Fa'e's mind, sucked up by the very ground beneath her. Now free to move, she returned Hoshi embrace with warmth, but turned her head to stare blindly at the mound of hair. Her eyes only glimpsed the quickly fading energy it radiated before the color and glow disappeared entirely, dying out and fading into the earth.
Leaning away, her shaky hands fumbled to feel the soft, though muddy, ends. That was her childhood... The longest ends had been on this journey with her since birth, chronicling her existence with her. For a sentimental creature like Shina, it was difficult to let go of.
Gathering her emotions, Shina reached down, sinking her fingers into the hardened mud. With a great pull, she wrenched free a small handful of hair, and after wiping it on her dress, she tucked it away for safe keeping. She was, as has been stated, a very sentimental being.
Then, in one fluid motion, she dived straight back into Hoshi's arm with all the might she had left, clinging like an infant to his chest. Beaming with love and affection, she glanced up at him and whispered, "I love you with all my soul; I always have. I'm sorry to have been away from you for so long." Burying her head in his chest for only a moment, she began to return his kisses with equal fervor, happy to be back with her family.
If only she knew that her own mother and family still lay unconscious all about her...

Mildly unnerved by the serching eyes, unseeing no matter how hard Shina tried, Hoshi diverted his gaze, choosing instead to soak up the beauty of his beloved. The glowing presence that she had begun to find as her pregnancy advanced, her comfortable muscles, the smooth curves.
Hoshi watched cautiously as Shina yanked her hair from the ground, kissing her forehead when she was done wit the last rembrance of childhood. She was the same Shina, and yet, her hair was not the only thing that had changed. The Starkeeper pushed into the back of his mind the blind eyes, though he could feel a weight pressing down onto his stomach - the predicament could be dealt with later.
He noted now, that in pregnancy, or just in her idle state, that Shina's belly had not grown in size since he had last seen her, but she had become more aware of it, it seemed, and though her spirit still seemed frail, Hoshi knew that she would soon become the strong woman he knew. Until then, though, he could hold her vulnerable state and return the soft kisses.
"You've never been away," Hoshi replied, a gentle grin on his face. "Even when you aren't with me physically, I think of you every moment of every day... I couldn't live without you." His lips locked with hers, carressing the life back into them as Hoshi tried to feed his strength and senses into Shina's needy system.
The Starkeeper broke away for a moment, casting his glance around the field of fallen bodies and heaved a small sigh. Soon, he would need to take inventory on them all, for now that they were found, he couldn't leave them out here. And Akina needed tending to, Hoshi would never be able to repay his debt to her for finding his love. But for now, Hoshi could not seem to break away from the embrace of Shina, holding her tight in his arms.

A gentle, stroking hand continued to carress the small round of a swollen belly as she let herself be sucked into Hoshi's arms. She might have been away, but she would never forgot how his body seemed to wrap around her like a blanket. Their lips, too, seemed to be two puzzle pieces with a perfect fit.
It was at this moment that Akina allowed herself to rise, moving silently as not to alert Shina and hoping that the child would not sense her spiritual presence. Her keen elf eyes scanned the bodies over the field, counting silently in her head. She had, despite her guilt, overheard Hoshi and Shina's conversation and understood the the Fa'e was temporarily blind... perhaps that was for the best at this moment. Shina could leave this clearing without ever knowing that her family lay around her, still trapped in their unconsciousness.
Without moving, Akina remained still, casting her eyes to the ground as Hoshi and Shina continued their loving embrace. Why was it that she felt so protective of this Fa'e? They had only met twice before... it was such a strange sensation to be pulled to another being so strongly.
Shina smiled widely again at Hoshi's words. "You could never leave my heart either. It was the thought of the baby, my dear family, and you that kept me tied to life." Her eyes widened with quiet joy. "Oh, I can't even imagine how mother must be feeling! And poor Nyoka and Kia... I must have made you all sick with worry." She slid back into his arms. "I just have so many questions for everyone..."
Truth be told, Shina was still unaware of how long she had been away, the things she had missed, including her very first birthday. It was easy for her to be so joyous without the knowledge of these things on her shoulders.

"More than sick with worry," Hoshi offered, wrapping his arms tighter around Shina as he broke their embrace, and nestled his head into her hair to sniff the fresh scent of moist dirt and tiny earthworms. "More like deathly worried."
As the other Fa'e mentioned her close family, Hoshi lifted his eyes slowly, to look around the field. Eyes growing stronger as the sun began to go over the horizon, he could make out the shape of Akina's form, and he willed himself to widen his eyebrows, a question he hoped that she would see.
But even now, he could tell that all he wanted to focus on was Shina, and not the others. Though he felt like a horrible person feeling like that, and knew he shouldn't, as if he were a child that was going to try to steal a cookie in hopes he wouldn't be caught, he still wanted to keep this precious moments with Shina sacred.
"It's been a long time, love," Hoshi finally said, laying his head on the top of hers. "A lot has happened."

The soft form and bright wings of the Fa'e conformed again, melting into Hoshi's embrace. She didn't need her vision to love him or hold him tight. But her heart fluttered as she felt a small blip in his energy. Was something the matter?
"Hoshi, love..." she began slowly, tongue searching for the words within her tired mouth. "How long have I been away for?" It nearly cut her lips to utter such a dangerous question. Part of Shina did not want to know, but her overwhelming curiousity could not be avoided.
Shina didn't feel very different. Her hands knew every crevice of the round of child on her stomach, and it had no grown at all. Wandering hands crept to her face, feeling blindly like a child. Still, there was only dirt there, no signs of aging to her.
Turning to face her beloved, she repeated the same task, letting her hands slide up his chest and neck. Soft fingers traced the deep worry lines of his face, and she grimaced within. What had happened to put her in this eerie sleep?
Why couldn't see remember what she was even doing in this meadow? Each time Shina tried to explore her own mind, she felt as if something was pushing her out again. A strange feeling of terror began to grip the empathic Fa'e, and she pulled Hoshi closer, resting her head on his chest.
Far across the clearing, Akina had noticed Hoshi's questioning glance and had answered it with a simple head shake telling him to go. The elf wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to lie to Shina, to hide the fate of her family from her, but honestly, Akina was scared, scared for Shina to hate her, to see the brave Fa'e cry once more. Dropping her head, she began to calculate how she could move the bodies and where to put them. Hoshi only needed to concern himself with Shina.
