I'm not really a fan of bass distortion. I'll use it if the song I'm playing requires it, but I prefer the warm sounds of my basses. I love the hollow tapping noises that Iron Maiden use, so I use that quiet alot, but most of the time I put my bass guitars through an EQ pedal to metal them up a bit.

Rage Against The Machine's Timmy C used some distortion, and he is one of my fav bassist. I have the ODB-3 bass overdrve pedal, I really like the tone i get out of it, its fun just to mess with, as well as nice to add that extra distortion of distorting just the guitar isnt enough.

i like the crunchey sound of distortion, it give me a feeling in my veins like i wanna play harder and faster, i mainly play punk rock, so thats ot generally a bad thing, but sometimes, i like to mellow down, and just jam with the deep warm sound of just bass

Like I've said before, I like my overdrive pedal when appropriate, but I didn't get a bass with an incredible and versatile tone so I can smother it in effects all the time. Moderation is a good thing.

In my band, I use distortion when we write songs ( we kinda sound like Muse & Dir en grey without the whole Japanese-ness ) We play some punk ( which sounds [I think] awful with distortion ) & I lay off the overdrive, but otherwise, low end distortion gives you that driving line that you can find in music like "Satisfaction" by Benny Bennassi. Not a very good analogy, but you might get my point.

I got a Digitech BP200 a while back and I love it. I can play clean through it, or make up my own distortion effects, whether it's a simple growl or something to make it sound really synthetic. Distortion is awesome but you really have to make sure it fits with what you're playing, which is probably why I have so many different presets on the pedal...
